At the end of 2018, my husband and I quit our jobs, sold our yoga studio and 90% of our possessions and moved into our 1969 VW bus. We spent 18 months traveling the globe exploring, rock climbing, adventuring and eating delicious vegan food along the way. We recently settled in Joshua Tree, CA with our pup Gypsy, and have been adjusting to a minimalist life in a house.

I love how honest this is. I've just shaved my hair for the second time and hoping I stick to my guns of never bleaching again. Don't underestimate how much of a safety blanket hair is. I always thought I was quite confident and didn't care what people thought but it's easy when you look like everyone else and "feel" beautiful. It's 99% bluffing.

As someone who has gone back and forth from long to short to long to short...it resonated with me when you mentioned wearing more "feminine" things like earrings and pink. I find I wear more jewelry and super girly dresses when my hair is short. And I recognize that it's because it makes me feel more "feminine". I recently cut mine short again (a number two on the sides and a four on top), and I'm practicing being comfortable with people seeing me as more androgynous. I think it's about checking in with yourself and knowing what makes you happy. lol, and sometimes that takes some trial and error! Thanks for sharing your journey with us, and best wishes!

I shaved my head after a disaster of a salon visit. I went from waist length hair to being bald. I used to dress super feminine always in skirts and dresses. Those feel weird to me now. Lately I’ve been wearing cashmere sweaters, skinny jeans, rocker boots, and boho earrings. And I have to fill in my brows and wear mascara or else I feel really masculine.

Your comments are flooded with how beautiful and feminine you look, in buzz cut, now in pixie look, you can do so many looks so well. I’ve complemented you before as well a couple of times. But all that is not important if you do not feel you, if you feel something is missing. I’m sorry to hear that, I empathize with your struggle. I’ve had a time in my life when others wanted a different appearance from me than I wanted myself. And I still remember how such a look can make it harder to feel yourself. I hope that it may come in your near future that you will feel completely you again. Thank you for sharing this update cause I had been wondering how you were currently feeling. Stay safe 🙏

it makes her look like a GUY. that's flattering? she should keep and take care of her natural hair as it grows out long because as middle age approaches and menopause takes hold, that hair is going to thin out really badly. there is still time to enjoy it while some beauty is there.

I personally admire your choice to go for a buzz cut!!! I will at some point do the same. The beauty of a cut this short is that during the grow out - you are able to sport a ton of different styles. I had a pixie cut several years ago, I loved it! 🥰🥰🥰

I went through these exact feelings when I was growing out a very short pixie. The “loving it” feeling lasted maybe 2 weeks and then I spiralled into a hair identity crisis. I felt like I lost who I am without my hair and it didn’t help when friends would tell me not to let my hair define me, or that it will grow quickly so don’t worry.. it does not feel quick at all when you are in the middle of waiting for growth 😭
At least you have the assurance that your hair IS growing and won’t be like this forever ☝🏼 patience during the process 🙃 also, you may find lots of styling tips on Pinterest for people growing out a pixie

I feel you! Thank you for sharing the process. I cut off my hair about 2.5 years ago to a short pixie with an undercut to cut off all my bleached hair and get healthy again. I have an awesome hairdresser (Lindsey Lepore in Newport Beach) who coached me through it and told me exactly what to expect and the timeline. She was spot on and it was really helpful to have that guidance. My hair is now shoulder length and only in the last 2 months has flattened out of all the weird kinks. All that to say, keep your eyes on the prize. Looking forward to seeing some cool hats and berets etc through winter!

I shaved my head a couple summers ago in support of a woman in our church who was going through cancer, so she wouldn't have to be the only bald woman in church. I love it so much, that I still shave it every 6 weeks or so... Using a number two on the clippers. I think for me, being an albino, my hair was always the first thing everyone noticed and commented upon, but I didn't love it. Now people still notice the color, but they comment on the cut, which was actually my choice unlike the albino effect LOL so I like that more. But if I was trying to grow it out again, I'm sure I would feel just like you do! It is a long annoying process! but you will find things to like about it every step of the way, I'm sure, because you just seem to be very intentional about being positive!

Your face really suits short hair! I think it looks great 👍 I'm really surprised that you only was your hair every 2 or 3 weeks considering you live in a hot climate. It's not the hair so much that needs to be washed but the scalp. May be this is a reason why your hair is growing slowly, perhaps the scalp needs to be stimulated while shampooing. Just a thought. 😍

I am feeling your pain. I had long hair and one day decided to get a very short pixie. After a few weeks it dawned on me how long it was going to take to get some length. It’s been 8 months and I did cut the back to avoid the mullet look but 5he sides were sticking out from the beginning of my ears. Like you, I also have cowlicks and forgot because when unit was long 5he weight hid the cowlick. Long story short, 8 months went by and I was still feeling masculine and very unattractive, I just couldn’t stand it any more. Believe it or not, I invested in some beautiful synthetic wigs, that were not cheap but they mad3 me feel more feminine. Now my side hair is in the middle of my ear and I feel like Buster Brown, ugh!. I will continue to wear these wigs until I have a short bob. I have learned my lesson and will never cut my hair that short again. I need versatility. Good luck and be patient.

I have fibromyalgia and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (formerly called chronic fatigue syndrome), so my body is incredible sensitive. The weight of my hair is painful for me, so about once a week my husband buzz cuts it for me (3 mm on the sides and back; 6 mm on top. I have found that my hair is only growing at half the rate in the winter. So, if you’re like me in terms of hair growth, you might find that your hair grows much faster in the summer. That might give you some hope. 🙂

I totally understand everything you are going through and feeling. I had chemo end of 2015 then just about the time it was the length of your previous length I had a stem cell transplant. My hair grows about the same speed..a turtle moves faster!!! I would encourage you to trim it every 6 weeks as it seems to encourage the roots to grow. My hair is very fine, I have more hair in the back then front so i can't wear headbands or even hair clips.
My heart skipped a beat when watching as i know exactly the challenge and feelings you have to deal with daily and sometimes hourly. I say have fun let it dry in spiked or right out of shower look! Most of all remember to love yourself! 🥰

I shaved my head a bunch of time and had it grow back to chin-length a few times and ughhhh, the struggle was REAL. I also have fine, straight hair with LOADS of cowlicks so the in-between stages were just awkward. But now that I do have a bob cut with my all "virgin" hair (meaning for once, I haven't dyed it whatsoever)... I miss my shaved head! It takes SO LONG to dry, i need to wash it a lot more often and I never know how to style it haha.

I remember in high school my friend cut my hair with house scissors into almost a buzz cut and I cried and went to bed that night literally hoping it was a bad dream and I’d wake up with my hair again. It took over a year to get to my shoulders. I’ll never forget how my hair stayed on the lawn where we cut it for like six months and how many trims I got to try to not have a mullet and then they’d cut it shorter so it’d take longer to grow out then I’d cry and cry. Lol. Probably the only time in my life I ever cried about my hair.

When you cut your hair you indicated that the dreads had caused damage - hair pulling out etc. I wonder if your hair is still recovering and that is why it is growing slowly. I've heard that using castor oil can help hair grow but I wonder if your hair would feel and look oily. I think the buzz cut looked great on you as does this longer (but still short!) hair but you didn't really choose this look so I think that makes it harder.

I have heard that if you cut your hair when the moon is waning, it will grow slower; if you cut it when the moon is waxing, it will grow faster. I have not personally tested this theory, but you could check what phase the moon was in when you cut your hair if you are curious. ;) Also, to me, your hair looks longer than 2 inches. I would hold the measuring tape straight up instead of pulling it forward. That might give a more accurate reading.

I shaved my head August 28, 2021 when the moon was waning and mine has gown 1.5 inches as of November 28, 2021.

@@pinkfiction1406 I think that's about normal for most people - 1/2 an inch per month. Do you know how fast your hair usually grows? Everybody is different. I knew a girl whose hair used to grow a couple of inches a month!
To really test the waxing/waning moon theory, I think you would have to check after haircuts at both times. :) You'd have to be really curious, I guess. ;)

You are great with any kind of hairstyle, but to be honest I personally like this a lot better than the dreadlocks. You have a beautiful face and it doesn’t need to be hidden behind hair. ☺️
I’ve cut my hair too, in June and I love it, cut it even twice, but people are always like: hmm, why did you do that, you had such beautiful long hair? I feel like people think you only look like a women if you have long hair, but our hair is not what makes us women! I think it’s what society expects from us, to have long hair and if we don’t, they make us feel unfeminine. But I think femininity has nothing to do with a haircut... anyway... I wish you would love it, but I hope for you you will like it again soon and in the meantime, remember, you look feminine because you are a female person and identify as such!

I always find it so sad when women associate femininity with long hair. I'm 65 and when I was young women, girls, actresses, so many women had short hair. After all the battles of feminism, girls seem to feel obliged to conform to long hair and pink waaay too much these days

I agree. I'm 24 years old and buzzed my hair off. I still feel feminine lol. Nobody needs long hair to feel feminine.

@@tutibritney 👏👏👏👏 I've felt more feminine with a buzzcut. It's odd how people associate feminity with long hair

You should wash your hair at least once a week. It keeps pores open, hair will grow better.

Normally, hair grows one half inch a month, so in six months it would be three inches. 🥰

Rebecca just grow your hair. Do
Not cut it. Once it gets a bit longer
it gets easier to handle. Do not
keep it short. Your hair is a lovely
natural colour. Long hair is lovely
but any style would suit your great
looks. Lots of love from Zurich -
    Switzerland.
