  • This route begins at the Wasdale national trust car park and is a big one.. There is an option to skip Kirk Fell but once on your way to Pillar there is really no turning back as routes down from here can be difficult.
Getting to Pillar is roughly the half way point and a wonderful ridge walk past Scoat Fell, a short out and back to Steeple before Red Pike and the ascent of Yewbarrow.

It would be a great fun ascent to Yewbarrow if ya weren't knackered by the time you come to it.. there's only 1 real feasible way to it and its the long way round, unless you were doing the 1 single fell of Yewbarrow i spose.. yea good fun, thanks for watching chief, i appreciate it :)

@daveostlemountainman I've followed you starting from when you slipped last time on Mosedale route up blacksail pass but what inspired me to watch more was the glaramara one which also I felt with in drab conditions was not fun but a learning curve but still great footage so glad you share your experience and a pleasure following you thankyou cheers to future hiking and enjoy binsey 😀

That was a bloody ball breaker mind! I did Kirk Fell with Ashley Arnold and his wife about 2 years ago but we went up in-between Kirk Fell and Great Gable, so we ended up doing both summits but together with 7 hours of driving for me, made it a tough day. Two female friends of mine came down the nose of Kirk Fell, falling several times each and ended up in tears when they got down. Dear God, I hope that speedo dancing does not come off mind - yikes! That was one pull to to Kirk Fell mind, you could not pay me to go up or down the nose on Kirk Fell. I need Red Pike and Yewbarrow and I hope I get better weather than you, it looked brutal and I hope you did miss a nice easier way up and down. Really felt for those poor sheep and I blame the owners not the dog, who is just following its instinct. Fair play to you all, that was one hell of a route, cheers Alan

Aye I remember your video doing gable and kirk, looked a more pleasant route.. I am definitely coming back to do this again in the summer (skipping kirk fell of course).. The views must be incredible as you spend most of the day above 800m. There is a gradual path up Yewbarrow round its rear but I believe its still quite a chunk of scree.. If you just need those 2 I'd probably go up the path I came down on. Thanks for watching Alan, tek care lad :)

A brilliant walk, just a pity the weather was so awful. Glad to see you did Kirk Fell straight up the nose; this is without doubt on the THE steepest climbs in the Lakes. I've been up the path you came down, and thought at the time that it must be tricky descended it. The walk onwards to Pillar is very long, and surprisingly tough. The path onwards to Scoat Fell is very sketchy indeed, especially in the clag. I love Yewbarrow; it's my favourite fell of them all, but the climb up Stirrup Crag (or down it) is very tricky indeed. At least you've saved one of the easiest fells for your last one, you'll really enjoy it. Despite only being small; it has a lovely summit. Enjoy it, Dave - you've earned it!

Cheers Mal.. Aye always intended to end there.. Can see it from our back garden so it'll always hold special place to me.. Bit nervous for my first ever wild camp but getting one done should open up a few more doors for me in what I can do.. Yea its a great walk, will definitely be back on a shorts n tshirt day to enjoy it properly.. Tek care lad :)

Never done Kirk Fell direct, always come to it via Pillar or Gable. Well done. Great walk, and a very tough one in somewhat trying conditions you might say. Give us a wave from Binsey, I can see the top from our house.

Cheers Dave for letting us on your journey there has been some funny and fantastic moments a toughie on this one not least because of the stress of the lost dog 😢but even moreso if it has done damage to the sheep not nice for you to witness or for us to listen to.
