Making a Mini Hatchet - Pop's Project of the Month

- Mini hatchet, camp hatchet, pack hatchet...whatever you want to call it -- in the latest Pop's Project of the Month, bladesmith Walter Sorrells shows the making of a small, light, easily carried hatchet. The blade -- made entirely from material from Pop's Knife Supplies -- is a relatively simple entry level blade making project. The one-piece blade and handle are made from 8670 steel, and the handle is made from vintage micarta. It's a great DIY project!

The hatchets turned out really cool!
Right on!
I finally have all my raw material to glue up my nightfall blank ! Excited to do more work
Tons of great little hints!
I will definitely be ordering some steel from pops.
Very well explained. Oftentimes, these basic techniques are overlooked, and suddenly, the work gets ruined.
Thanks for sharing!
I watch other knife makers hoping to find little tips and tricks. I like the tape idea on your locating pins. I fight those all the time. Tight so they stay equals no epoxy. Losses enough for epoxy, and they fall through. The tape is a simple salutation. Thanks for taking us along with the build.
Picked up some 8670 from Pop’s and used it for the first time this weekend. I loved working with it.
8670 is some tough stuff! I think only S5 is tougher. You'd practically have a hard time breaking it even straight out of the quench
Thanks for using that steel. I just ordered some from Pops (their advertising in your channel worked 🙂) for some knife projects on a whim, was curious how it would turn out.
excellent job!
Really enjoy these videos. Thank you.
Great work dude 😉😉
would love to see you do a review of Grizzly T32459 new belt grinder
Maybe some paracord wrapped on those skeleton hatchets would be a nice addition by the future owners.
Amazing video - as usual! Could you link to the cool drill patent clamp ? (And drill oil you use)?
Coincidentally i just finished up a fun side project I've been working on for a while. a viking style bearded hatchet/tomahawk. I used 1/4" thick 1095, vintage micarta scales with matching micarta pins. actually came out pretty nice, was a fun new challenge. Pretty sure i have enough 1095 left over that i could make one of these.
3:26 That's what she said.
stick tang are easier in terms of pin places. can be the most difficult thing. shitty drill press !
Ha. Has a CNC mill but a worthless drill press. Dude that table flex is awful.
