How to Pick a Tubular Lock (Basics)

  • I show how tubular pin tumbler locks work and how they can be opened using tubular lock picks and single pin picking. A tubular pin tumbler lock, also known as an ace lock, circle pin tumbler lock, or radial lock, is a variety of pin tumbler lock in which six to eight pins are arranged in a circular pattern, and the corresponding key is tubular or cylindrical in shape.

    Tubular locks are commonly seen on bicycle locks, computer locks, elevators, and a variety of coin-operated devices such as vending machines. Tubular pin tumbler locks are generally considered by the general public to be safer and more resistant to picking than standard locks. This is primarily because they are often seen on coin boxes for vending machines and coin-operated machines. However, the primary reason the locks are used in these applications is their lack of the depth requirement that most other locks require.

    Such locks can be picked by a special tubular lock pick with a minimum of effort in very little time; it is also possible to defeat them by drilling with a hole-saw drill bit. Standard tubular-lock drill bit diameters are 0.375 in (9.5 mm) and 0.394 in (10.0 mm). To prevent drilling, many tubular locks have a middle pin made from hardened steel or contain a ball bearing in the middle pin.
    While the process is simple and can be mastered with practice, lockpicking requires a great deal of patience. It can be a hobby as well as a practical skill. Locksmiths define lock-picking as the manipulation of a lock's components to open a lock without a key. To understand lock picking you first have to know how locks and keys work. Most locks are based on fairly similar concepts but they do come in all shapes and sizes, with many design variations. This is for educational purposes only.
    Lockpicking is the art of unlocking a lock by analyzing and manipulating the components of the lock device without the original key. In addition, ideal lock picking should not damage the lock itself, allowing it to be rekeyed for later use, which is especially important with antique locks that would be impossible to replace if destructive entry methods were used. Although lock picking can be associated with criminal intent, it is an essential skill for a locksmith and is often pursued by law-abiding citizens as a useful skill to learn or simply a hobby. The move towards combination locks for high-security items such as safes was intended to remove the weakest part of the lock: its keyhole.

    Thank you so much for this!
    The guy who rented my apartment before me left a cheap wall mounted safe with an electronic lock and a backup tubular lock and I wanted to remove it because I needed the space. And I wasn't very keen on ripping the whole wall out.
    Got the exact same pick as you and thanks to your tutorial it worked!

      @@jeffreyarena6199 seems you are new to the topic of buying used items. Used means just it had a pre-owner and says little about the condition the item is in (mechanical/electrical wear of component=runtime, optical appearance=scratches /dirt, functionality=fully, or minor/big problem/ defective, also there are things like age after purchase or things like "old-new in stock , meaning older items never sold=new" perfect for tools)
      The Machine i got was new condition meaning no optical problems looked like new, mechanical very little runtime which i confirm now after 5 years its still working.

    After reading some comments, I realized my issue. The bands that are included with the picks don't provide enough resistance. Because of this, the spring loaded pins were pushing the levers farther than they needed to go. I laterally grabbed generic rubber bands from the junk drawer and looped them around the pick right over the levers, until finally, after about 4 of them, it was finally working the way he showed in the video.

    I got the HUK Chinese kit. $32. Your video got me trained up in about 3 minutes. I tightened all the handle set screws and wrote the color/size under each tool. 7.0,7.5,7.8 and then removed all the silicone tension rings from the outside. I then installed a white silicone band of the same size ( Amazon, so useful) then one ring, then band,ring,band. This was the perfect amount of resistance and retention and made opening the practice lock far more repeatable 9/10.
    I will have to test and verify it's good on all metal locks too. Thanks for the video 🔐🔨🩺

      I know this is an old message but maybe someone else will read this. There is a set screw under one of the pick pins 180 degrees from where that hole is for the tension pin. You slide the pick pin back to expose that screw. Loosen it, slide the tension pin in, then tighten the set screw.

    If I understand this correctly you could vary the springs or driver pins to prevent an easy pick with the tubular lockpick but after the attacker picked it once conventionally and only did a 1/16 turn they could then impression their tool before completing the turn... is there a way to give the keyway a spring to jump back a click in case the attacker loosens keyway tension?

I've not tried it as I haven't a lock to practice on right now - but in theory I'd suggest the tool will take the correct pattern and if you lock the tool's pins in place you'd avoid having to re-pick those extra times?

    Thanks, looks doable. I found an old creepy AF Furby that still works so I want to break into my cousins safe and leave it inside.

    Is it even possible to pick an Ace II since the pins require different amounts of tension? Another issue with this particular safe of mine... is that I had to apply some force even when I still had the key, pushing in on the door and almost lifting upward.. so frustrating. Yes, I've attempted single pin picking and am simply having the same problem, and I cannot find the right tension wrench to use... please help.

    My friend bought a business that has a pool table. The keys were never provided for it, so I might try this to see if I can open the coin mechanism for her and see if there are any coins still in it

      Take the coins out of the lock and then put the coins back in the machine

      Try a wrapping a shoelace around it. Changes the tension.

    • @michaelwest7649
      @michaelwest7649 Рік тому +1

      There is a set screw hidden under one of those sliders. (It's on opposite side of tension pin). Loosen and then pull up the pin.

    • @xxomega702buzzalini8
      @xxomega702buzzalini8 5 років тому +3

      Don't buy clear locks. Practice on master locks or cheap stuff from hardware stores. Real locks are not clear and you need to practice on the feel and how much tenstion you applt to the tension tool.

    • @JakeArnet
      @JakeArnet 4 роки тому +2

      Amazon is a good place.. but yeah, as said above you should practice on cheap locks to get the real world feeling.

      @@vonmalegowski hey I know this is an old video but you can just use any music if you ask for permission. If you like anything from a smaller artist or group just hit them up on Twitter or Facebook or whatever and state what song you would like to use or just say "hey I want to put your music in my UA-cam video can you please get back to me" and most people will be nice and just allow you to use it. On the other hand you can just use anything that says no copyright sounds or make your own music because the music you use is very basic. Hope this helps
