BATTLETECH: The Hellbringer

- A mech made famous from its usage by #ClanJadeFalcon during the #ClanInvasion, the #Hellbringer is a Heavy #Battlemech with a mixed reputation. This #ClanHellsHorses design has a history, and a trackrecord, which may come to surprise many of you as we break it down in this video.
Named #Loki by the #FederatedCommonwealth, this descendent of the #Thor has more than a fearsome bite... but it may have a glass jaw. One of the original Clan mechs from TRO: 3050 as well.

Big thanks to @MechanicalFrog for contributing a bit of their voice to this video. Also big thanks to the audience for helping me out taking some gameplay footage.
I used one remixed track from @TSealz in this video, check out his channel.

Weapons worthy of the Clan elite. Armor worthy of the Rifleman 3N. Enough support systems to satisfy a compulsive hoarder. Cost greater than the Nova Cat. Truly, this machine is one of a kind... Mostly because only one unit didn't explode yet.
It's one of my favorite, "Oops, forgot armor!" mechs.
Any particular variant(s) you prefer? When playing it in Classic or Alpha Strike do you put a better pilot with a lower gunnery skill in it so as to better keep movement high while increasing the likelihood of landing hits? Definitely a "the best defense is overwhelming offense" mech.
Would love to see the New Explorer's Corp or an adversary run one in some fan fiction (wink, wink).
It truly is the omnimech successor to the Warhammer

Despite not being their invention, the Hellbringer Prime is the Jade Falcons in a nutshell. It's aggressive, unpredictable, violent, secretly dishonorable and folds like wet tissue paper when the enemy fights back. It's exactly the kind of mech a man like Vandervahn Chistu would favour and I Iove it for all of those reasons, it's not a good mech, but it is a fun mech.
"Oh I'm all in favor of honorable combat,"

Some Jade Falcon Mechwarrior, probably.

I recall a Mechwarrior RPG campaign in the late 1990s. Our merc unit fought the Clans, and whenever we captured a Hellbringer we stripped the weapons and sold the chassis off to the nearest Great House. We knew how easily they were taken out - after all, we'd just managed it.
My favorite machine. Overengineered, overgunned, horrendously under-armored... You know what you're facing when a clanner pilot rolls up in one of these.
It is so Clan in it's design and execution.
I love the look of it, I just need to figure out a build for it.
@@andylastname566 For MWO or tabletop?
@@derekburge5294 MWO, prime variant.
@@andylastname566 Gotchu, fam. I had good success with five ERMeds and a gauss rifle. 2 ERLarge and then a punch of medium and small makes a good boat. My personal favorite though: use some of the other pods and pack the LRMs in. Think you can get 40-50, a couple of ERSmalls and a TAG easily enough.
The strange thing is the Hellbringer Prime is a fantastic ambush predator in dense terrain if pushed into that role and using advanced rules. It can hide and give a friendly mech better defense with ghost targets, finish off crippled mechs very quickly, keep enemies from hiding with the active probe, and act as a nasty surprise to even assault mechs - even a Dire Wolf at close quarters isn’t going to enjoy a full alpha strike from the Hellbringer, and if you’re driving a Hellbringer you probably want to die gloriously. A pair of these in a heavy striker star can seriously bring the pain and complicate any plan an enemy commander might have in small scale engagements. Is it the best? No. Is it still dangerous? Yes.

@@bthsr7113 Easier done in a GUNDAM or the like than in a real, big-boy mech. ;)
If you're going to make a lightly armored mech, you typically want it to move fast, have long range, or be cheap enough that you can afford to lose a few. The Hellbringer doesn't have any of these advantages, but it's packed to the brim with so many guns and toys that it ALMOST makes up for it
It’s like a modern French tank
@@bkane573, Ouch
Facing mostly 3025 tech the 5/8 heavy isn't exactly slow for the clan invasion time period, with the IS forces it would typically be seeing it was nasty, especially if you kept range and kept moving. The issue was really that once it started facing things with equal range a few years later the design didn't work without zellbringen.
Add in let's turn our crusader clanners into over aggressive morons and zell matters less.
Of all the Great Houses, I definitely can see the Capellan Confederation using these, especially with some of their crazier regiments like Warrior House Dai-Da-Chi.
As a Capellan player, I'm a little upset by this assertion.
It's only made worse by the fact that I want to add a few of these to my Liao Company as battlefield salvage.
In my fan fiction, many of these mechs were purchased by an Inner Sphere company, which modified them into the Hellbringer B, which simply added 4 tons of standard armor at the expense of Pod Space. They also built new configurations for the design with the remaining 24.5 tons of pod space. They would then either resell this machine to interested buyers or keep several for use in their own sponsered mercenary unit.
Still funny that Hell Horses mech become one of the Falcons favorite
Great video good to see Mechanical Frog.
I always saw the Hellbringer as a lighter clan Warhammer. They also have similar weapons loadouts too. Mainly because I looked at Hellbringer as being a way around the legal issues of the Unseen Mechs at the time. Whether that's true or not.
Warhammer's a bit more survivable tbh
I remember watching an NPC Atlas-II DFA a badly damaged Hellbringer the meme was so strong that the Mechmaster let the Atlas II just crumple the poor thing. I had no idea how bad the armor was so I asked then Mechmaster pulled up a sheet for a standard Hellbringer and I just went DAMN!.
It certainly lives up to its name, because its either bringing hell to the enemy or hell to its pilot.
My favorite death or glory machine.
Death, or glory? Why not both!?
@@BigRed40TECH That is a very likely option when piloting a Hellbringer
Yassss, yaaaasss!
My absolute favorite clan mech. Loaded with so many weapons and speed, and support systems that you don’t really care that it has the armor of a medium mech lol.
After 3 hours of the Dtone Rhino this feels like a one minute short!
It was great seeing the illustrious Mech Frog involved in this one. I really enjoyed running the Hellbringer on the PC, & will have to try one on the tabletop tonight. I always had the mentality that you have to play it like a light mech where if you take a serious hit you're done & would ratger utilize it to try & isolate an enemy unit vs wading into combat. I think I will give the Type T tonight & see what I think of it. Thank you gents for another informative video.
As someone that loves flawed mechs, this is one of my favorites! Also, the man is more important than the machine according to the Hell's Horses , so maybe you just need mechwarriors that know what they're doing. So not Jade Falcons 😜
That is a fair point, it being a Horse design first makes me wonder if it was supposed to be an upgunned Dasher of sorts.
Think about it, speed, omni capability, big boom but not enough armor to hold it together.
It drives up, drops off the armored kids, pops a few shots, runs off, then the vehicles come in to do the tanking of hits while the Hellbringer pops in here and there for damage dealing.
That would be a very Hells Horses thing to do I feel.
I dunno what it is but a lot of the mechs I like seem to be glass cannons, this one among them.
Well if you don't get hit, you can have a whole lot more toys. I know I tend to prioritize firepower of armor in a lot of games I play, using mobility, cover, and superior range to make up for being a squishy guy. That and my formative gaming had far more accessible and varied firepower than armor.
Sure, I eventually upgraded to the Carbonax armor to reduce damage by 90 percent, but there were so many toys to get first.
If you don't fight by clan dueling rules and use them as second line support they can be very effective. Ironically, and I think purposely on the part of the writers, the clans made many mechs that were better suited to Inner Sphere style combined arms combat than dueling which were thus unpopular with their own warriors but made great salvage for IS units lucky enough to get them.
"YoU dArE tO rEfUsE mY bAtChAlL!" - Nicolai Malthas who piloted a Summoner, a mech very similar to the Hellbringer in appearance and in being named after a Norse God. (Thor for the Summoner, Loki for the Hellbringer)
At 22 seconds "So Marius, at last I found you". Great vid for an imperfect monster.
The frog at the beginning was a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one. Oh, and MechFrog being here is cool too, I guess.
Oh yes! Day improved 100%
I can’t help it!! Ever since mechwarrior 2 was my first exposure I freakin love this mech!
"What can we add to make this machine more survivable?"
"A-pods!"
"AMS!"
"ECM!"
"Beagle probe!"
"... Armor?"
"DESGRA!"
The creche of necessity - or desperation - is often the rationale for designs that somehow justify its continued operational survival.
All systems nominal
Another one of my favorite mechs. It's a great "Shock" weapon. Handle the main objective as quick as possible and leave. I always preferred to use it on flat terrain.
I didn't know about this meck. Funny thing is I made my own version of it. Don't ask I don't remember.
It looks like the unfortunate offspring of a bushwhacker, Thor and maybe a dragon. Considering that 2 of those mechs go ham, it looks fun
I don't believe you mentioned that the Prime also has a 3 ton targeting computer, another thing it needed to sacrifice for the improved armaments and cooling. Still a fun and informative video.
Mehh.
The A-pods are easily sacrificed for 2 DHS.
So is downgrading the Ssrm6 to a 4 for an extra DHS.
Overall the mech itself is easily fixed by Adding either Endo steel or FF. The conditions of its original Genesis do not hold true anymore.
1 Hellbringer, 2 Summoners, a Night Gyr, and a Turkina make an AWESOME Jade Falcon fluffy star that wrecks face!
Wait I thought they engine heat sinks came in packs of 10?!? You’re telling me I could stick more of these warm boys on my engine the entire time!
If I'm not mistaken the Home Clans ended up designing the Ebon Jaguar as a replacement for the Hellbringer. It's a better mech in almost every way, in my opinion.
You mean the Cauldron-Born, quiaff?
@@AGS363 Aff, you dirty freebirth. lol
Love seeing collaborations between BT UA-camrs. Don't see that often in other fandoms.
Basically, in universe, a great tool considering it was desperately and under a budget. For example, the Prime with a minor tweak or endo style stuff and it would be a faster Warhammer.
This video made me like it way more than originally.
Because I love me a Hunchback IIC, and this sits in thay arena. Give unto me ALL the destructive stupid!
YYEESSS the colab I was wanting for a long time and finally got thank you both.
Hellbringer is the French AMX-50 of battlemechs. Its big, its gotta alotta firepower, but its armored like a soup can.
Big Red Frog Clan Activated!
Its performance explains why it shows up in early mw4 mercs inventories, but i had decent luck with it. It worked great as a gunboat in an ambush squad
When you rush out the door late for work, woops looks like I forgot to put on pants. But I'm here and lets go!
-you might be a Hellbringer pilot
One of my favourite mechs back in MW2
Clan Green Froggo makes good use of omnimech technology. Glory to Khan Kermit.
What good timing. I'm getting one of these table top ready for a Jade Falcon star.
I recommend the Loki for all Clans. It should be first on their list in all battles. Let them burn bright and die!
I bet a lot of pilots pulled the active probe and maybe the machine guns and the SRM for armor and heat sinks, and I think that would make it an excellent 65 ton heavy
Hellbringer: The Mech that screams "I am here for a good time, not a LONG time"
The Loki/Hellbringer Prime is a mech that desperately wants Triple Strength Myomer. You alpha strike on the way in and kick someone to death or die trying.
Honestly, it’s one of the few clan mechs I would say to engage at range. LRMs, PPCs, AC5s will hit the Loki like a truck as it just doesn’t have the armor for a stand-off or direct engagement. Close to midrange and just spam those dice. It’ll go down.
I never could get warm to these. In group tactics it wouldnt be so bad where you could hide it a bit and use it like a warhammer or yeah in a duel blow your enemy up before they can get you. I just remeber the last time facing one is all. Did a city scenario and got the drop on one with a penetrator. The pulse laser vomit left it a melted husk. Falcons seem to take the japanese naval aviator approach aproch. You dont get to live to learn from your mistakes.😂
When i was in a clan on MWO, four of us was rotating in the cues with nothing but Hellbringers with ECMs. The map was Grim Plexus. Instead of heading to center like every other game, we desided to goof off by running to rim back and forth. The funny thing is, the rest of the players decided to follow our leads. We had no plan but they still followed us. This also confused the other team and they had to actually scout us out. Since we had all our fire power around us, when the other team started to trickle in they got desimated as our wounded backed off while fresher armor moved forward. We had a big laugh as we was just goofing off but got a brutal victory.
My favorite Clanner design. Gotta love that Hell's Horses just ripped a fat line of coke and screamed "WARHAMMER! BIGGER WARHAMMER!"
High risk high reward machines are my jam.
One of my favorite battlemechs in Mechwarrior 2.
I love this flawed mech for aspect and history(i play jade falcon so..) i love how i serch a good way to play it despite all the issue
Slap some modular armor on that puppy. And a supercharger.
It lives up to the name Loki, it deceives you into thinking its good with its firepower, and when you take it out it pulls the wool off and reveals that you fell for its tricks.
my fav mech by my fav clan
Oh the Warhammer Omni, also known as the Hellbringer/Loki. Its a bigger Adder/Puma.
Its really a mad design, sort of like how they *could* have made the Inner Sphere Charger assault mech. The Hellbringer is fast and powerful, but lacks all the soft factors you really need to be a competent warmachine. Its lightly armored for its weight and it overheats easily. One of the most basic custom jobs I make for it is to replace those ER PPCs with either Large Pulse Lasers or more often ER Large Lasers.
The Timber Wolf is an all-rounder. The Summoner is a Jump jetter with a jack-of-all-trades weapon set. The Mad Dog is cheap, long range unit.
The Hellbringer's niche is in its electronics. It has a Targeting Computer, Electronic Countermeasures, an Active Probe, Anti-Missile System, and A-Pods.
Now its successor the Hel/Loki MK II is more like a Rifleman Omni. It speed decreases but it carries much more long range firepower.
The IIc is a different mech.
One reason it was named the Loki, was as Galen Cox put it,' it's utterly mad configuration'. In BTA 3062, I use it as a fast strike, overheating Heavy, with two plasma cannons, and SRM 6's with Inferno Ammo. Toasty!
The good ole death or glory machine. TBF, part of it getting shot up so much is knowing its often easiest to knock down and reduce the firepower of the clan lance that is cutting up your own forces, that's why I always shoot it up first. Still love the mech.
currently playing BTA 3062 on my first day off after six 12s at the hospital with snacks and coffee nearby and then i find out this is coming out. it's time to order pizza.
MECHFROG CROSSOVER?!?❤️🐸
Nice work and analysis. Never got the drop on these guys for melee back in the day, but reprisals could be fun if you could bait your opponent into chasing well armoured bait (aka honor demanding they take down that Charger that's trying to escape).
Probably my favorite of the favorite original 16 omnis. Pure offense and speed, built to duel and nothing else. Lights up like a christmas tree. Utterly amazing and very clanlike
This is my brother's favorite mech to use in tabletop Battletech. I call it his "how many shots left?" Mech because it seems to have endless weaponry.
Are you stealthed? No. Does the enemy see you? Yes?
-You need armor.
the stealth meta has been more of a recent development...I wouldn't say it was well implemented or even available through the first 30 years of battletech & mechwarrior's offerings
I loved this machine!
Kudos for more Battletech lore Big Red-40TECH.
I loved this collaboration!! You are both my favorite BattleTech channels!!! Thank you thank you thank you!
I gave this mech the thunderbolt treatment. Any heavy mechs that have bad load get the same load out as my reliable inner sphere thunderbolt. 3 M lasers, 1 L laser, 2 AC 2 (2 and 1/2 tons ammo), 3 tons double heatsinks, and as much armor as possible.
frog jumpscare! raaaah
I had no idea this mech was so lacking. Great Video:)
The Loki is such a cool mech! Great backstory, and very few good variants. But the Diamond Shark T goes a long way toward making it scary again.
If it had just Emdi Steel it could be amazing!
Of course i like fighting like this and im not a Clan warrior by any stretch!
oh, shame the F variant didnt make it into the video. Personally love the double AC10X hellbringer as "ye olde reliable" xD
Scientist Caste 1: "So, we slapped on a bunch of weapons and ammunition. This should be more than adequate for our MechWarriors piloting the Hellbringers."
Scientist Caste 2: "Okay, but what about room for armor?"
Scientist Caste 1: "... Armor?"
- Pretty much how development of this thing went.
"But what about the armor?"
"Fuck it, we ball!"
The great thing about having lots of pod space is that you can really leverage it's omnimech nature. But a super easy modification is to, like the Warhammer which it's partly based on, drop the SRM and machine guns to add more heatsinks (WHM-6D). Being able to sustain fire with the ER-PPCs and reposition under ECM and AMS cover, it seems like you'd get a really nasty long-range harasser.
Yeah and if you properly stagger the weapons you can manage to add more armor to the design since even the Warhammer (besides the 6D) typically has to do the ol' 2-1-2 fire sequence on it's PPCs or deal with heat build up.
2-2-1, They're ppc stay at range let's things with armour get close those heavy woods/cover are your friend. ( No I am not a camper per se... I just try fairly hard not to rush 4/6 mechs)
Hellbringer when like a dozent scorpions come out behind the T-Bolt he just destroyed.
(It´s very dishonorable to not make it a one on one)
Ironically one of the best beginner player mechs in MWO haha.
Thor, thunder from the AC, lightning from the PPC. Loki, because its setup is mad.
Thor: He is of Asgard and he is my brother! Black Widow: He killed 80 people in 2 days. Thor: He’s adopted.
@DIET PLAIN the naming of those mechs by the inner sphere predates Avengers by about 30 years 😁
also love the idea some people had with this mech in campaign play: use it to introduce IS players to clan tech: its vast array of weapons make it a great intro to the kind of guns to expect from clans, but its flaws also means taking it out isnt too hard.
I've used the Hellbringer B to great effect. The secret is to support it with units who can take advantage of it's strengths, while making up for it's downsides. I'm a MASSIVE fan of the Loki II. Keep in mind, I'm a Hell's Horses player, so it's always a part of combined arms applications.
I love customizing this thing in the games. The first thing I do is add armor.
It's beautiful.
It's mine.
Awesome, Video. Where can I pick up a Hellbringer? I have a "Friend" that needs a Mech. LOL
Ride or die. Rather fitting for Hells Horses.
What a beast.
Was the first Clan ECM mech in MWO, so i used it a lot until we got the Shadowcat.
To make the "Prime" more resistent i simply removed the SSRM6/ammo for more 4 ton armor, and placed the 2 PPCs on separate fire controls.
Or you can switch from ER PPC to ER LL to increase armor.
I love that even with their lack of knowledge about Clan technology, Inner Sphere warriors took one look at this thing and went, "Are they sure? Can you cool it? Does it even have armor? What the fuck is this thing?"
Fought this.mech more times than I can count and I must say you've gave it more credit than it deserves lol :-) on the battlefield it invariably shuts down and I the arena it's killed so quickly it doesn't get to use its firepower :-) it always puts a smile on my face when the clanner brings this over a vulture :-)
i always remember the naming came from - Thor due to having Thunder and lightning - PPC / AC build and Loki as the ISMWs thought the load outs were just crazy - i do not remember if that was from novel, tro or head cannon... i mean i remember when they were first introduced... need to get my books out and see .. I have been appreciating your guest introductions...
A mech that truly proves that someone needs to figure out how to trade pod space for more armor
Are you by any chance going to cover the IIC mechs? I'd love to hear a series about the classic 3; The Rifleman IIC, Warhammer IIC, and Marauder IIC in no particular order and the life of second line clan warriors.
Don't forget the IIC that ABSOLUTELY is not a IIC and a Clanner will tear your ribs out if you even suggest its lineage - the Conjurer.
I like the j in some scout star.
It’s still my favorite mech (after swapping machine guns and a-pods for heat sinks)
So the T variant lol
I feel like the hellbringer is the perfect representation of the Hell's Horses. A clan that, on paper, should be one of the greatest in their willingness to incorporate units and ideologies that the other clans have erroneously rejected, but in reality often end up doing and making some questionable choices.
God I love these idiots.
