CLARKSDALE! "It Is What It Is and The Sun Never Sets On Cool," - wise words from Redd Paden.
See this unique place through the eyes of music legend and multiple Grammy Award Winner Charlie Musselwhite and Chilly Billy Howell (formerly Poor William) of Delta Bohemian Tours and a Clarksdale born and raised native.
This is a real documentary about Clarksdale, Mississippi, heart of the Mississippi Delta and home of the birthplace of the blues. These shots were all taken spontaneously over the course of two days except for some of the music footage. Charlie Musselwhite loves Clarksdale and he let us follow him around some.
Footage of music from Red's Blues Club, Ground Zero Blues Club, Hambone Gallery, Juke Joint Chapel, Hopson Commissary and more. Musicians featured include Leo "Bud" Welch, Big George Brock, Robert "Bilbo" Walker, Lightnin' Malcolm, Josh "Razorblade" Stewart, Anthony "Big A" Sherrod, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Charlie Musselwhite, Walt Busby, Bill Abel, Jon Popper, Cedric Burnside, Stan Street, Lee Williams, Heather Crosse, and more.
A big thank you to our dear friends Charlie and Henrietta Musselwhite and Charles Evans for letting us film them as they wandered around their beloved Clarksdale on November 2, 2015.
We especially appreciate our very good friend Red Paden for all he does to keep the blues alive in Clarksdale. He, Roger Stolle and Mayor Luckett are integral parts of our blues music scene in Clarksdale along with a host of many others....too many to mention. We are grateful to our local friends who tolerate us and allow us to film and photograph in their establishments and while they perform.
We consider ourselves very blessed to be natives of Clarksdale and the Mississippi Delta. We hope you will come visit soon. If you do, please give Magical Madge and Chilly Billy a shout. Visit www.deltabohemian.com for more information. AND BY ALL MEANS, TAKE A DELTA BOHEMIAN TOUR WITH Chilly Billy. www.deltabohemiantours.com

I lived in Clarksdale from 1986-1991 as a very young person. There ain't no place like it on this Earth- seein' this documentary, particularly the footage of the Sunflower River, brings back a flood of memories. I know I didn't stay long, but the Delta is in my blood.

I had Charlie Musselwhite's name on a 70s concert poster hanging on my wall for years and never knew who belonged to that name. I dove deep into the blues and harmonica around 2000 and dug up a recording of him playing smokestack lightning and was wowed. Charlie moved to the top of my most influential mentors.

Things have been a bit slow since mid-March due to economic shutdown. We have been posting musicians performing daily on our Live from Clarksdale Facebook page. Now musicians have started performing live with audience members attending. Last night, the Shack Up Inn had musicians performing on their open lawn area.
We do have a gritty look about us as we are not a pristine town, by any means. We are full of lots of friendly, kind people though and we hope you will come back to visit us again some day.
Here is a link to the Facebook page I referred to: facebook.com/LiveFromClarksdale/
And here is a link to the live music last night at the Shacks. facebook.com/watch/?v=700211274245634&extid=T44yTrhwwfjJsmid

I live in Santa Rosa, CA and was raised in Detroit. A couple years ago I took a road trip and visited Clarksdale. Local people in Santa Rosa, like Bill Bowker (DJ), Charlie Musselwhite and others know about Clarksdale. I spent 3 days there and it will be one of my favorite mini-vacations. I recommend a visit to anyone who likes the blues.

Love Clarksdale! As a teenage English blues fanatic I had to wait a very long 50 years until I retired to be able to visit the home of the blues... and what a thrill it was when I finally made it there! It's hard to believe it when you're actually standing in the place where the music you grew up with and which meant so much to you began... I kept saying to myself "that's the goddamn Mississippi boy... right there"!

Delta Bohemian : My trip to Clarksdale was a long time coming, that's for sure! Apart from the fascinating Delta Blues Museum & the great Ground Zero blues club, my abiding memory of Clarksdale is the warm, relaxed, bohemian vibe that emanates from the place...really making you feel welcome. I liked that the 'historic area" was being both preserved and rejuvenated, it's a great idea that I noticed quite a few towns down South were doing. The Blues Trail markers gave really interesting insight into many historic locations, I mean who knew Ike Turner was an elevator op in his youth - not me! The Riverside Hotel was another really interesting place to visit, as was the wonderfully restored beautiful old Greyhound Bus building, now functioning as a tourist info centre. My visit was part of a self drive Blues Trail road trip, and I only had 24 hours in Clarksdale so I didn't see as much as I wanted to, but the strange thing about the Delta is you can feel / hear it calling you back... so I'm definitely planning a return visit, if only to see the famous crossroads guitar sign which annoyingly had been removed for maintenance when I was there!

I'm also a British blues fanatic and harmonica player, probably a similar age to you. I missed a chance to go to Clarksdale in 1994 and, after watching this video, I doubt if I will go now. Sorry to be disrespectful but seems to be a bit like a theme park. I love Charlie Musselwhite and believe him to be sincere and Kingfish is a rising star of the blues but I'm not sure this is for me now.

@@michaelthompson864 I visited Clarksdale as part of a three week road trip around a wide swathe of the South, taking in places like Savannah, Charleston, New Orleans, Memphis, Nutbush, Nashville and Atlanta. There was so much to see on that trip & so many great moments that it was one of the best USA holidays I’ve ever had. Driving on Highway 61 from New Orleans to Memphis was an experience in itself... as was visiting Robert Johnson’s grave in a tiny rural churchyard near Money, Mississippi. The Stax Museum in Memphis along with the Sun Records tour & visiting Elvis Presley’s Gracelands made the city a fascinating two day stop over for me, but everyone has different tastes, so I appreciate what works for some doesn’t for all!

I remember when Clarksdale was a nice little city. It looks like the Blues is all that is keeping it going. I was born and raised in that area and visited real juke joints. They didn't play then blues that much in the 70's. It was all about soul back then.

Thanks for watching and commenting! Live blues came to a screeching halt March 2020. It’s not back yet. Clarksdale is struggling.
Some here are forcing masks, even between bites and sips!
We will refrain from living in such a mandatory totalitarian environment. So until then, we will do our own thing, so to speak.
Chilly Billy is still giving his incredible tours!
And, more specifically to your comment, we grew up here and we remember Clarksdale well in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a vibrant little town!

Dead Game that is a good question and not easily answered in a sentence or two. We are taking steps forward. It will take time and perseverance and commitment to our community and our youth. We must engage everyone in our revitalization. Mostly, we must bring God back in to our lives and in to our homes. Because, with God’s help, we can achieve much! Without Him we will let the devil drive and will fall in to destruction and ruin.
Don’t let the devil ride. Because if we let the devil ride he is going to want to drive.

Clarksdale caught us by surprise earlier this year (2017) Father's Day morning. We were visiting people and places in Mississippi, driving the Delta on our way to Vicksburg. Had no plans except to wander around and see what we would see. We parked somewhere downtown and started walking on empty Yazoo Avenue. Watermelon Slim wandered outside his Bluesberry Cafe and easily persuaded us to come on in. Lucious Spiller was on stage. We ordered the Spanish Omelet with Grits...a taste treat for senses I didn't know I had! Between Lucious and Watermelon performing, the great food, and crowd, it was an Awesome morning I will remember forever! Get to see Watermelon again in Kansas City September 14 at Knuckleheads, but will be difficult not to compare to that delicious Sunday morning in June. Been to Clarksdale, Cleveland, Greenville, Greenwood in Feb and yes the weather was bad. It rained and flooded almost everyday I was there. And it was some of the bleakest towns and days I’ve ever seen. No wonder the blues originated from these sad towns. I wouldn’t want to go back. I’m sorry.

Greyhound Bus stops in Clarksdale. We have had Guests arrive by bus before! You could also take the City of New Orleans Amtrak train and get off in Marks, MS which is about a 15-20 minute drive from Clarksdale. Transportation from Marks to Clarksdale may be a bit of a challenge but can be done!

  • @joleneloveland2942
    @joleneloveland2942 4 роки тому

At such a tender age of 16-17, we'd heard about it. This was like, mind you, 1970, i guess.
So we did i!! We went looking for the crossroads. Where was the crossroads that Robert Johnson spoke of so often?? 1970. There were no smartphones with gps. There were no tablets, just word of mouth as it drifted from one mouth to another far far north up the road a bit. We were told to check many highways in MS. It was hard to agree with anyone. I dont think anyone really knew where "the crossroads" were back then. Or a few knew but we were unable to acess them. We came to the conclusion that it had to be one of the highways going out of the east side of McComb MS. We hadnt a clue, but we did a massive exploration of Mississippi. Stayed a few days at the Magnolia Motel in Magnolia, MS. Little did i know that the Magnolia, Gillsburg, McComb area would be etched so painfully in my memory 4 short years later, when Lynyrd Skynyrds airplane fell out of the sky near Gillshurg,MS
Ronnie Van Zant started calling himuself the "Mississippi Kid" about 90 days before he parished in the plane crash. God bless Ronnie.

We only showed a select scenes. You can find all kinds of music here. Come check it out around Juke Joint Festival or King Biscuit Blues Festival or Deep Blues Festival or Hambone Festival.....the list goes on. :) But blues is evolving...as we are losing so many of our blues greats. Life is change so I guess blues goes along with that too. It's all good though. Much to be thankful for.
