Oddly enough I get the whole "horror of late night programming" since it probably was what caused me to develop my arachnaphobia when I woke up in the middle of the night at age 3 to the old IT movie playing on the TV.
I had that happen to me but with the movie Pi by Darren Aronofsky. I woke up and it was at the end of the movie where he *spoilers* drills a hole in his head *end spoilers* and the movie is in black and white and really freaked me out. I was more like... 9 or 10 tho hehe
there is definitely a surreal feeling from watching tv so late at night that i really cannot explain, i remember being in high school and a very stupid kid, i wanted to watch teen titans so badly but at the time cartoon network only aired it at 1am so i really did wait that much to watch it at times while laying down in bed curled up in my blankets and while it was so worth it, sometimes i got such an eerie feeling from doing this alone that i really can't describe. spooky
Actually this game does a very good job of simulating advertisements in the 50s they were always catchy and we're a little more provocative and if you didn't know TV wasn't 24 hours back then they would end the broadcast with the Star Spangled Banner
I am so amazed by the sound design in this. I'm pausing this every minute with how good it sounds over speakers. It's like my neighbor's dog actually is barking, or sirens are wailing from a distant street, and I have to make sure everything outside is okay. I can't speak to how it sounds with earbuds, but wow. The creator nailed the atmosphere. Thanks for playing this for us Manly; it's a great game that captured me straight from the thumbnail.
I liked the style of the game, the contrast of light and dark was very nice. And the idea was very interesting, I loved how they used the tv channels. Hopefully they’ll make more games like this in the future.
I like how you where "Oh my god how meany commercials are there?!?" Yet.. It was just the one.. That said if you ever get a chance to look at old commercials from the time period this is re-creating.. The developer of this game was spot on. ( When it comes to cig commercials at least. )
I like to imagine that the game maker took all those little clay figures and put them up on a prominent shelf in her living room, so when people come over to visit, they're greeted by strange little figures that people wonder about but never _ask_ about.
You have no idea how happy this game makes me. That fact that I could tell the blabber signal was paper towel is so comforting and the whole thing was gorgeously creepy from the little kooky signal monsters, the vintage audio effects in the National Anthem's audio and voice acting, the obvious sitcom and mystery parodies to the underlying cult-ish story. Simply gorgeous just *mwah*🤌 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Man I remember TV Guide, every Friday you'd have to go out and buy the new issue covering the upcoming week before reading through it 2 or 3 times as you scoured each page to make sure you didn't miss anything you wanted to watch, while writing down the time and what channel so you wouldn't forget. It was either that or going to the TV Guide channel and watch as it slooowly scrolls through showing what's currently on and coming up for the next hour and a half.
you just unlocked a memory of me and my mom going to the hair salon when i was a kid and i would get really bored so for some reason i'd just obsessively look for any tv guide they still had there and read through it and for some reason i really liked just jumping straight to anything i saw with the yellow or red dot for rating and just as obsessively looked for those in every page to read what it was
My mum still religiously buys one every time a new issue is released. I think they're like 79p or something here so mega cheap. One of my mum's favourite pastimes is just flicking through the TV guide and circling every show or movie she wants to watch throughout the upcoming week. I actually didn't realise TV Guide was an older thing until now lol!
Reminder that TV didn't used to be constant, the "American flag" bit that's on all 4 channels was the end of the broadcast for the day at like 11pm (or maybe a little later depending when). I'm not quite old enough to remember seeing it for myself, but I'm sure that at least here in the UK, we only had 3 terrestrial channels in the UK (edit: in the early 80s! learned from parents and watching the Young Ones lol!) and they definitely shut down overnight. I just imagine some folks here are too young to even know it was a thing!
I'm from America but I was born in 2000 so I also never saw those end of the day sign off broadcasts. I only know about it because I was obsessed with the movie Poltergeist as a kid and I remember seeing that in the movie and asking my mom about it. Semi related fun fact: CNN made an end of the world sign off during the Cold War in case nukes dropped. After the Cold War ended they just shelved it in a vault. It was only rumored to exist until, I think the 2010's, when an employee or intern leaked it to the public. It's here on YT if you wanna check it out.
13:10 In the notes of the babbling channel, their were a couple of words The sentences with the words in them were: Peel the bone. Do not the fog. Stay beeble! Orb! Dipper the flipper watch? 🤓
This was a surprisingly unique experience to say the least. Loved the visual style and the little extras at the end were really cool. Just some insight into the creation of the game, the inspiration and the developer themselves is a really neat little bonus.
I like that the "evil" tv guide gave you a way to defend yourself and seemed to legitimately warp its followers somewhere to save them from what I guess is the world ending
_Perfect late night TV horror_ Some of the infomercials you see are just as scary and have real people that look very much like those 3D clay models! I enjoyed this and the nods to the golden age of TV shows like Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and One Step Beyond. MBH's getting freaked out with the hands crawling made me laugh the most.
These are the types of games I LOVE. Indie (imo) has been superseding triple A for a while now. I want to see more from devs like this. Something totally out of left-field
5:32 this is probably before your time MBH, but back in the day (the 90's on prior), whenever a channel would stop broadcasting they would play the Star Spangled Banner and sign off (like the beginning of *Poltergeist)* This means it's midnight or later. Remember those instructions!
The 90's!? I thought the practice stopped way before that, like the 70's or earlier Edit: Internet says that it stopped in the 80's. More recent than I thought
@@EmperorZ19 it could have been as late as the early 90’s. Cable was definitely the primary source of TV entertainment, but you still had a few cable access channels (primarily local) that would still do it, sometimes for no other reason than nostalgia.
i really like this because it makes me think of that eerie feeling you had watching cable tv at night and stumbling onto something really strange and being glued to the screen despite the uneasy feelings you had, kinda like "UNEDITED FOOTAGE OF A BEAR"
I LOVE the art book at the end! Really cool way to showcase the effort that went into making this cool and creative horror game. Finally something hella unique.
Hey Manly I know you probably won’t see this but I’ve been going through a lot lately and your videos have really helped me motivate myself to do things or get me to sleep. Thanks a lot man. Edit: And also thank you a lot for this amazing and supportive community! I am getting better, slowly, but better.
You're doing a good job, buddy! And I think I get what you mean. Manly's voice and delivery are always soothing to me, no matter what horror material he's featuring, and that combination makes this a big comfort channel for me. (Water and meds reminder, choo choo!)
This really is a great community. Keep going, you’ve already made an impact on all of us liking and responding to your comment. You are making an impact in other aspects of your life, too, whether you can see it yet or not ❤️
It perfectly taps into the whole uncanny valley thing. My brain knows it's supposed to be a human face but it's just so wrong that it makes me anxious and fidgety. Also the distorted voices creep me out too. It's such a perfect combo for a horror game.
Night Signal is seriously so inspiring! Very creative, I haven't been so invested in wanting to learn more about the 'midnight channel' since P4 in 2012! But really though, I know its different but the nighttime channels are satisfying my lovecraftian eldritch horror itch.
Wow, I didn't think this would strike nostalgia in me. Growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, I remember when everyone had old bulky T.Vs, and watching midnight programs alone always had that underlining creepiness.
I know that the creator stated their influence coming from old point and click and Twilight Zone, but I gotta say, this gameplay of just scrolling through different weird and strange phenomena and reading a little pamphlet about each of them really gave me SCP vibes, and I am absolutely here for it. It's like you're exploring different SCPs from your TV and getting messed up or killed by them. Honestly tho the TV and remote can honestly be considered SCPs of their own for what they're capable of doing
This game defines work with what you've got. Watching it, I never guessed it was made the way it was. I love the idea of using a green image for a green screen substitute, I've never seen anyone do that personally. Needless to say, I'm impressed with this game and it gave me the 'Uncanny Valley' experience. More so during the daytime sequence because the nighttime viewing are things I'm used to seeing, not uncanny human faces. I really enjoyed it.
This is a great game! There are always rumors of Scary Midnight Channel circulating around whenever a new place have a TV, so this actually touch so many of horror aspects! Nice game! Kudos to the devs
The creativity and effort that went into making this is amazing! Great job to the creator and I hope they continue making games in this fashion! Who knew you could make such a fascinating game with a bunch of clay and a spirit Halloween robe?
Sometimes, you can just tell that a game is filled with a lot of love and care. Like, even without the lovely notes about the art and all that, you could tell while watching Manly play (or by playing the game) that the people behind it cared about what they were making, and I think that's super neat.
My grandma had one of these tvs. Made the mistake of leaving it on one night and when I woke up there were hands everywhere. It was a huge hassle cleaning them all up.
I'm pretty old, and I remember staying up late to when broadcasting actually ended, and they played the US national anthem before either pre-recorded paid programing or more likely, just a dead screen. This amused me more than scared me because of how many times I had to be the 'antenna bunny' to get a good signal. It really tugged on my nostalgia and seeing things in the snow with an overactive imagination.
When you said that this was the same game dev of “a wonderful day of fishing” I was so excited I don’t know what it is about that game but I absolutely LOVE it and I loved this one too I can’t wait to see future works from this dev
Before I even start watching the video, this concept reminded me of something. When I was a little kid I stayed the night at my Grandpa and Aunt's place. I stayed up all night watching TV because they had left it on and went to sleep. Mr. Meaty had come on and you probably already know where I'm going with this. Having never seen the show before, my first episode ended up being the tapeworm episode late at night.
after watching this for like the 4th time, I noticed that during the first quiz section, they say "who first discovered the technological capabilities of lunar dust in 1960" and the answer is "Henry Hinniker" the same name as the tv set, that means A) this is in a weird alternate history where we went to the moon 9 years early at least, AND we are advanced enough to analyze moon dust and harvest it enough to make a quiz show. It also implies that the TV uses some kind of weird moon dust magic to work.
The style in this piece just oozes out. A veritable picture out of Better Homes and Gardens Magazine! Phenomenal. It gave even me, an English person who wasn't alive in the '60s, that nostalgic feeling for a period we only absorb through pop culture these days (and see satirised in properties like Fallout). The original Twilight Zone broadcasts must have been so awesome to watch as a child, all in black and white with those clunky antennae. Although... I think I'll leave the Pleasantville conservatism, cigarette ads and radioactive TV dinners in the past!
This feels like a good place to share this story of mine: When I was a kid I once woke up at like 2 AM and wasn't tired so I started watching the TV that was left on. The thing that was on the TV was a horror movie about getting stuck in dreams/exploring dreams too much and it ends with a boss battle with the devil himself. Lucifer in the flesh. Being quite the religious kid it was a real scare. Had to watch 2 documentaries that came afterwards to calm down and go to sleep again.
I enjoyed this but it made me feel weird, the sounds all of it is so very unique. It also makes me feel uncanny valley feels been a long time since I've honestly felt this level of creepy.
manly is my favorite let’s player ily manly, your voice is fr asmr and even when u laugh it’s like the cherry on top! ever since i found you years ago i never stopped watching
It used to be when disembodied hands crawled out due to your TV set you'd have to throw your remote at them. It would have been so much easier with a remote control that shot electric pulses.
This concept brings me such memories from childhood. I think every child fears the tv during the night in the dark and I was no exception. I remember when I was a kid, in the dark of the night the THX logo terrified me. I also remember when i was 5, from behind the couch in midnight the tv played a women with black braids, a sari, and sitting with hands behind her against a green background, two people dressed in black next to her. One of them slicing her neck. This is one of my earliest memories and gave me ptsd nightmares for so many years and feared watching the TV after midnight. P.s the american song playing at midnight reminds me of the Joanna Lopez tv sign off case. If you look it up, you'll get why.
I find a lot of these indie horror games to be a little too cheesy for my liking, but this is just incredible. Whoever it was that developed this did a fantastic job.
God this game was fantastic! I used to only watch Markiplier videos but holy hell was I missing out. This channel has the goods when it comes to horror game content. Thank you ManlyBadassHero, you gained another subscriber.
I like the way they added the end of programming segment in the beginning, really took me back. before all the channels had moved to automated 24 hour broadcasting, you would get the national anthem or a test screen with a message saying programming would resume at a specified time in the morning
I like the gameplay and storytelling mechanic of your sole source of solace in the daytime is also what becomes your enemy and nightmare during the night. You're locked in your apartment. You can't go outside. Your only form of human interaction, or any world news is your television, and only during the day. And at best, it is mostly infomercials, anything from the government is actually 100% disconcerting and only ensures that the American people are fucked during a time of crisis, making the television a false sense of assurance. At night you are fighting against it for your life, and are locked in small quarters with the enemy/threat.
This is an amazing game, I love the ideal of watching tv at night and creepy stuff happens! Now i've seen a few games like that, but the homage for Twilight Zone and old claymation shows is the real kicker for me!
In what way? I know I replayed the crushing part once right after it happened because I didn't see what killed him; I initially thought some form of monster (like the hands) must have appeared next to him and killed him, didn't realize the ceiling was encroaching. So are you making a joke about people never looking up or something?
11:14 "there it goes, midnight channel time" oh boy just wonder who will appear but yeah these channels appearing past midnight and the fog suddenly settling in cannot be a coincidence that it's a persona 4 reference
A lot of love went into this game! I love the style of it. very creepy and creative c: It’s sucks that it has some downvotes on steam. But I agree with them regarding the price. $10 for a 40 minute game is just a little bit much. But besides the price, I love the aesthetic of the game and the synopsis!

15:33 I like the subtle reference to "Time Enough at Last" within the larger Twilight Zone reference. We all need more time...

This amused me more than scared me because of how many times I had to be the 'antenna bunny' to get a good signal. It really tugged on my nostalgia and seeing things in the snow with an overactive imagination.
22:16 Courage the Cowardly Dog Cinematic Universe!?¡?¡!!?
Loved the game, super interesting concept and great use of clay 😁👌
Oh NO not the tapeworm episode
wait... you mean that show WASN'T a Fever Dream? It actually existed??
@@candlestone5397 apparently. I never saw an episode after that though...
Oh man, you poor soul…
I’m pretty sure that was also the only episode I ever saw of that
I love the little dev journal at the end explaining how they did stuff and their influences.
after watching this for like the 4th time, I noticed that during the first quiz section, they say "who first discovered the technological capabilities of lunar dust in 1960" and the answer is "Henry Hinniker" the same name as the tv set, that means A) this is in a weird alternate history where we went to the moon 9 years early at least, AND we are advanced enough to analyze moon dust and harvest it enough to make a quiz show.
22:16 I like the little courage the cowardly dog reference.
Stupid dog you make me look bad oga booga"
This feels like a good place to share this story of mine:
When I was a kid I once woke up at like 2 AM and wasn't tired so I started watching the TV that was left on.
Oh man are you talking about insidius? Just saw the newest movie today!
I enjoyed this but it made me feel weird, the sounds all of it is so very unique. It also makes me feel uncanny valley feels been a long time since I've honestly felt this level of creepy.

Manly turned into Knuckles for a second
manly is my favorite let’s player ily manly, your voice is fr asmr and even when u laugh it’s like the cherry on top! ever since i found you years ago i never stopped watching
It used to be when disembodied hands crawled out due to your TV set you'd have to throw your remote at them. It would have been so much easier with a remote control that shot electric pulses.
This reminds me of those cold war era nuclear war prep PSA commercials. They always felt super dystopian....
When it said, "you're not perfect" that brought me right back to my childhood trauma: The bugle monster from courage the cowardly dog.
I think they really took the "analog horror" concept literally and to the next level lmao
This game is incredibly creative! Nothing that comes out of the TV is as creepy as the normal human characters look.
16:03 Yeah, hot chocolate weather is pretty tasty.
That was definitely surreal. My favourite part was the daytime TV programs.
God this game was fantastic! I used to only watch Markiplier videos but holy hell was I missing out. This channel has the goods when it comes to horror game content. Thank you ManlyBadassHero, you gained another subscriber.
I like the way they added the end of programming segment in the beginning, really took me back. before all the channels had moved to automated 24 hour broadcasting, you would get the national anthem or a test screen with a message saying programming would resume at a specified time in the morning
really loved this game, and really appreciated you reading the dev notes at the end!
This reminds me of watching Cartoon Network as a kid then suddenly waking up to Adult Swim
Man, this TV stuff takes me back to the old crt tubes. At 4am the channels sign off and come back on at 6am. Neat.
Did not see the vid yet but i know it will be amazing, keep up the good work manly, cheers from Spain

That dog barking had me pausing the video constantly because I couldn’t tell if it was real or not.
Very cool, appreciate the backstory at the end, inventive production.
Looking at the first enemies like "oh no, it's Dan Scheneider!"
Not me and my dogs thinking there was an actual dog barking outside my house 😅
10:02 damn that dog sound is well done I'm looking around like wtf is that real
that song that plays at the very end is so so good
I love this channel. You always find the most fascinating games
I loved the art book and game development portion. Very cool to see the process of the story and aesthetics!
standing while watching tv, just like my dad
Basically part of the Plot of “Poltergeist” and loosely that of “The Stanley Parable” combined.
who doesn’t love this channel
Me, I do not love it, I respect and understand it.
My mom
_"Ok"_
Best channel ever.
I really enjoyed the artistic aspect of this game :)
i haven't watched the video yet but from the description i can only tell what kind of mental loops this game has in stored lol
the fact that most people replayed kazoozoo and manly getting crushed really shows a lot
In what way? I know I replayed the crushing part once right after it happened because I didn't see what killed him; I initially thought some form of monster (like the hands) must have appeared next to him and killed him, didn't realize the ceiling was encroaching. So are you making a joke about people never looking up or something?
I love that they included an art book as an extra! Thanks for going through that, too!
Normally I only fall asleep to the rpg maker games, but this one looks good. Let's hope it might become my triple favorite video
17:13 By far the funniest thing to ever happen to Manly 😂
11:14 "there it goes, midnight channel time"
oh boy just wonder who will appear
but yeah these channels appearing past midnight and the fog suddenly settling in cannot be a coincidence that it's a persona 4 reference
A lot of love went into this game! I love the style of it. very creepy and creative c:
It’s sucks that it has some downvotes on steam. But I agree with them regarding the price. $10 for a 40 minute game is just a little bit much.
But besides the price, I love the
aesthetic of the game and the synopsis!
I don’t know
It seems fair to me, considering all the work they put into it
