Major Clews Hut - Geehi Walls Trail

Explore the Geehi Walls Trail and Major Clews Hut. This popular 4WD trail travels through alpine ash, blooming yellow wattle, and montane forest as it descends steep ridges and gullies. You can also mountain bike this challenging trail, if you're well-prepared and watch out for 4WDs.
After driving 13 km in a north-westerly direction, you’ll reach Major Clews Hut. Stop to stretch your legs, enjoy a picnic, and take a good look at this historic mud brick hut, built in the late 1950s as a residence for the colorful Major Clews, a surveyor for the Snowy Mountain Scheme who mapped the area.
Extensive restoration work on Major Clews hut was primarily carried out by the Range Rover Club of NSW, with help from the Land Rover Owners Club of Sydney.
Club members rebuilt walls both externally and internally, removed the concrete render which was causing the hut to deteriorate and re-rendered the outside and some of the inside with locally-sourced mud that the original mud bricks and rammed earth walls were constructed from.
The Range Rover Club of NSW undertakes annual maintenance of the Geehi, Old Geehi, Keebles, Doctors and Major Clews huts in the Geehi region.
Construction
The house is unique in that it is built of pise or mud brick. There are three rooms above a cement floor and cement and stone fireplace.
