Phenomenal topic and video! My father was in the Ethiopian Navy for 15 years and so I've always had an interest in the Dahlak islands but never knew it had such a storied past!
Might be important in the future due to its geopolitical location, I could see Eritrea offering it for lease to the UAE, Turkey, maybe even China. If a war kicks off in the Horn of Africa, it might give Eritrea some cash and clout. Nonetheless, very cool history, thanks for the video.
The only thing I would have added in the video is the 2nd battle of Massawa which was a turning point in Eritreas independence war. Also there was a resort being built there but it’s not complete, it’s located on dahlak kabir.
if you're looking for more Africa stuff you should definitely look into UNITA's rival government of "Free Angola" aka the "People's Democratic Republic of Angola", it was probably one of the most successful quasi-states in history (alongside Tamil Eelam) and maintained a mostly functioning and ideologically driven government and military there's a lot of great sources available for it I can send if there's a good spot for it.
Oh, I 100% agree and the Democratic People's Republic of Angola + Tamil Eelam are both one my list! The best place for sending us info right now is on Discord - there’s a link on the channel’s page and in the description of this video.
Tamil Tigers did not build a successful quasi state. They were absolute failures and no better than the oppressive central government they were fighting. World is a better place because the tamil tigers are now extinct.
Nice brief history, please do one on the somali nation from beginning including the somali Anglo war and lands given to Ethiopia and Kenya by the British , that were originally greater somalia.
*interesting historical note, the najahid dynasty was actually brought into powee by the ruler of the muslim state of ifaat in the horn of africa* *also your map on the adal conquests is kinda innacurate since adal famously controlled most of the coastline of the horn of africa,* *i think they famously managed to reach as far as suakin in sudan*
Finally, some pre colonial africa action! The dahlak sultanate was a prime example to Yemen's influence in Africa (which spanned centuries before that, including the antiquity period), since it was in the middle of a constant power struggle between Ethiopia and yemen
A minor correction the map you used for adal is incorrect as Adal had more territory in the Somali region as well. The way it’s presented as if adal is an Ethiopian sultanate when it’s Somali in origin.
There is one important exception to the rule when it comes to African slave soldiers & Muslims Empires: The Habshis & Zanjis. While some were mercenaries, most were slave soldiers serving the Hyderabad Nizamate, Umayyad Sindh, the Deccan Sultanates and (to a lesser extent) Mughal Empire. They're ancestors of the modern Siddhi peoples of India & Pakistan
@@genovayork2468 Earlier in the video It's mentioned that it was rare for African Janissary/Mameluke equivalents to be mobilized outside of Africa, with those of the Arabian Peninsula being implied to be the only outliers. However, arguably the slave soldiers of the Arabian peninsula are actually the less relevant example, as the Habshis & Zanjis of the Indian Subcontinent are leagues more famous and influential, not only in the fact that they left a significant population demographic as part of their existence, but because Malik Ambar (the most famous Habshi) was one of the most famous, tangibly powerful & influential leaders in the Indian Ocean during his time, not just the Indian Subcontinent.
Considering the general regional war context, anything might happen... although probably not much anyhow. Seems like a relatively idyllic retirement place, they should develop a sustainable tourism industry: watch ships burn in the nearby war, enjoy the paradisiac waters and mangroves with an alcohol-free halal version of the daikiri. Khat is good though.
I’m actually working on a video about Eritrea itself - kind of like The Gambia one - that really shows how interconnected the country was/is in regional events. So, yeah; while I still think it’s unlikely anything will happen there nowadays, you never know. 100% it could be a phenomenal tourist destination though.
