Pentair DORADO™ Suction-Side Pool Cleaner Review

- This is the NEW Pentair DORADO™ Automatic Suction-Side Pool Cleaner. The Dorado is a unique cleaner with bristle brushes all along the bottom to help it clean and scrub your pool surface.
The Dorado is part of Pentair's Trade Grade product line which means it is not sold online but only available from your pool service tech or your local brick and mortar pool store.
The Dorado is based on the Kreepy Krauly Great White cleaner and it has the same internal design of that cleaner. The outer body is the main difference, and I find the Dorado to be an overall better balanced design. The reason manufacturers are making cleaners only available at your local pool store is to basically level the playing field. Retail stores and pool service guys can't compete with the online pricing in most cases - online retailers do not need to keep an inventory, they just simple drop ship an item in most cases.
So to keep pool stores and dealers doors open Pentair offers the Dorado cleaner as well as their Rebel cleaner and certain pool pumps with longer warranties. I like the idea because it is important to support your local businesses and help keep that segment thriving. Nothing inherently wrong with ordering products online, this just gives consumers more options.
Currently their is a rebate on the Dorado until September 5th 2016:

The Dorado is a simple geared type cleaner with actually very few moving parts. This makes the cleaner very reliable as well as very easy to fix yourself.
The bottom sports brushes all the way around and the cleaner has a slight bouncing motion also as it moves along the surface. The opening for debris while odd, is large enough for acorns and other large debris. I like the unique pop out turn mechanism as it is simple yet very effective.
The cleaner also has a bouncing motion as it is moving along the pool floor and walls. This bouncing motion helps loosen up dirt and debris similar to the bouncing motion of a traditional cleaner like the Kreepy Krauly cleaner.
The Dorado has a large cleaning path, 15 inches across. This is great for a large pool as it can cover a lot of area in a shorter period of time. It also is designed to climb the walls to the tile line and the gearing inside will turn the cleaner often to prevent it from getting stuck on the steps or the main drains on the bottom.
It comes with 12 one meter hoses or 40 feet of hose which is plenty for most pools. Also included are the parts to connect it to a pool skimmer or side port/ vacuum port. It is pretty easy to set up, the only thing that is crucial is getting the proper suction. If the suction is too low it just won't work it's way around the pool or climb the walls.
The brush design makes it ideal for pools with a lot of dirt on the walls and the overall design allows it to clean the entire pool in about 6-8 hours. It will spend more time in the deep end and on the deep end walls but if the suction is set properly it will also clean the shallow end of the pool effectively. The manual also makes note of this as most of the dirt and leaves is usually in the deep end bowl of the pool.
It comes with a two year warranty and after that the parts are pretty affordable. Overall it is very easy to work on and the longevity and parts replacements is a plus for this cleaner. You should have minimal problems as it is a very simple gearing program.
I like the Dorado cleaner and it is a solid option for your pool.

I’m a pool technician, I have been working for pinchy a penny during 5 years And believe me this is the Best Pool cleaner don’t buy another different even If it Pentair Brand
Your right - I have it as the Top 4 cleaner on my site but it is seriously underrated. I think it is the odd look that makes people overlook it. 👍
Saw it in action this weekend - heading to Pinch a Penny this week to buy it! Works like a ninja!
This is better than Zodiac MX6/8?
My pinch a penny store said to NOT use it to go up the walls. That it should never be going up the walls. Is this true? Because in the video it is mentioned as a feature.
I loved the sad memory flashback music! 😂
I'm a REALTOR, see lots of pools. Saw this in action over the weekend... can't buy one fast enough now!
This is an awsome cleaner !! It has a very simple design ,lightweight, and it is very effecient...I just bought mine last week, and I have a non screened pool with a lot of leaves, so far it doing a good job cleaning the pool...I highly recommend.
I agree. Totally under rated. 👍
I have had one of these for two seasons and I am not impressed.
It loves to get stuck on the drain cover so I spend a lot of time rescuing it. We changed the cover to a different design and it still gets stuck.
It does not clean the shallow end of the pool unless you mess with the hose length, then it doesn't clean the deep end.
The parts of the pool that it does clean it cleans well and I like that it climbs the walls.
When it comes time to service or replace I will be looking to replace this unit with something that I don't have to babysit.
(pool size ~12k gal free form)
I agree. The thing gets stuck everywhere. Both my drain covers, the same place climbing the wall, and also by the steps. I'm looking at it right now and it's stuck on the drain cover. Not only that but it's super loud. I had a smaller one that gave me no problems and was cheaper. I'd stay away from this one
Bring it in to your local pool store. This happened to me and reason it kept getting stuck was that there as a crack inside. Apparently the crack was from running too high
@@styznip The dealer said it was normal for it to get stuck
I’d bring it in to the local store and have them take a look. Shouldn’t be getting stuck
@@styznip I did - The dealer said it was normal for it to get stuck
I have one and i gotta say it really cleans the pool well. However as soon as I connect it to the skimmer, the water flow in the pump goes down to half the basket. my pool guy said i should not use it like that because it could damage the pump. not sure if the air in the basket is coming in from the junctions of the vacuum hose floating on the water or what. but its an immediate reaction to lose water flow. when removed, the water level goes back up. I asked a guy at Pinch a Penny and told me this shouldnt be happening/ what do you think could be causing this?
An air leak. Maybe the pump is the problem. Sometimes changing the pump lid o-ring is enough to solve the issue. Sometimes there is something else by the pump that is letting air in.
Great Video, will this cleaner work on a fiberglass in ground pool?
Yes. It should work well in there.
Your videos are great! I appreciate that you share your expertise. One friendly request. Can you try not to fade to black so much in between shots? Maybe it's just me but it makes it harder to watch. Thank you!!!
Wow looks like a huge step up from the great white
Yep, a great looking cleaner.
Hello, I bought a house that came with this pool vacuum and a side port attachment inside the pool. Today I popped it in the pool with all of the attachment hoses connected to the side port, then turned the pool on. Nothing is happening. I don’t see any other “on” switch. I thought that the pool pump being on would make the vacuum work. What might I be doing wrong?
Check for a Jandy valve by the equipment. Near the pump. I bet the valve is off
@@SPL I have lots of calves that look like what I see when I google Jandy Valve. I thought maybe it was the one labeled Skimmer but I turned that and still nothing. My other valves are for Main Drain, pool return, and the various fountains.
Hi. Great channel. New subscriber here. After watching your videos for the last couple of hours, I'm in between the Dorado and AquaNaut 400. I have 20ft long, 8 feet odd shape pool, no sharp edges except the steps. Question is: Which would you recommend? I get dust, small leaves and seeds from palm trees the size of a quarter. Im running a 2hp pulp. Thank you!
The Doraod will clean the walls slightly higher than the Aquanaut but I think the Hayward Aqaunaut 400 would be a better choice since your pool is pretty deep. It is designed for those deeper pools and will get better coverage.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL thanks for the quick reply. Do you think a leaf canister is a must? If so which one? I know the Hayward is one of your favorites but if I go with Dorado vacuum should I go with its counterpart or am I safe to go with another brand? Thx again
I have a customer that is interested in this cleaner. You had mentioned this is ideal for medium to large pools. This customer's pool is pretty small. Would it still be a good option for him?
Yes. You will just have some spare hoses ;).
Just got ours....is it supposed to be so loud?
Should not be able to hear it too much unless you have the suction too high.
Dorado vs. mx8 elite? What is your preference (if you don't mind to tell).
It's a bit like comparing a Mercedes to a Honda - MX8 Elite being the more expensive and higher developed machine. The only thing that will stop the MX8 Elite is long string like debris. The type of debris both cleaners can pick up is about the same. there are also more parts to change on the MX8 elite over time, but if these are your two options and you want to spend the extra $150 go with the MX8 elite - in no way am I saying this cleaner is not a good choice, but you asked.
Can you do a review on the Hayward Trivac 700 pressure cleaner?
As soon as it is available I plan on reviewing it. Hayward is being very cautious with this one and they are still doing testing on it - they don't want to repeat their Phantom disaster...
Interesting. Pretty expensive.
Just got one, but it does not seem to make it up the wall much. Tries to and then gives up and goes the other way. Thoughts?
What type of pool surface?
Traditional white plaster (marcite). 15' X 30" 8 feet deep. Love your videos BTW. Learned a lot.
It might just need more suction. Is it connected to the skimmer?
Was wondering how well it handles steps.
It turns out of the step areas with no issues.
if I got the wahoo how strong of a pump would i need to get it moving
3/4 hp is the minimum.
+Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 what about maximum
I have a barracuda for 15 year and it works great.
They can last forever. 👍
I've had mine for a week works great
Not the most attractive cleaner but effective.
Dude your music is very morbid. With that said, Love your channel!
👍
I have such a hard time selling these the way they're priced. Not worth what we have to sell them for, going with the Rebel is usually more worth it.
True, They should be priced along the lines as the Kreepy Krauly - not much in these at all.
Video Didn't show Price...
I don't sell products, just review themso I don't include any prices. I believe it is $419.00 at the pool store in your area with a $100 rebate til September 5th from Pentair
+Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 thanx! 👍🏽

Be aware: this cleaner does work well not great. It does have 1 major problem. The connecting hose constantly kinks up causing the cleaner to stop in place. I have had contact with Pentair and my local pool service store and no one has a solution to this problem. Another minor problem is the if you have a free form pool the cleaner does not always stay contacted to the bottom or the walls.
The hose kinking could be from too much suction from your pump. I would say the Pentair hoses are on the thin side. It wouldn't hurt to try some generic hoses off of Amazon - those tend to be thicker. Personally the thickest and best hoses are made by Zodiac/Fluidra.
I can not stress this enough this is the WORST pool cleaner ive ever seen
Mine does not work. It barely moves. What is the minimum pump power it needs?
3/4 hp should be enough to get it moving
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL thats the power of the pump I have but does not move.
