  • Suction Side Pool Cleaners are a good choice if you are in the market for an automatic cleaner. They run off of your existing pool pump and will generally help keep your pool very clean week to week. The price point of suction side cleaners is lower than that of a Pressure or Robotic Cleaner making them an ideal choice for the budget minded pool owner.
In this Podcast I briefly explain how a Suction Side Cleaner works and I give you the rundown on the top 6 cleaners I recommend for your pool. You can also find my list of the Top Suction Side cleaners here on my website:
    www.swimmingpoollearning.com/...
I've used or tested almost every suction side cleaner on the market, including some from foreign markets like Australia and South Africa. So I will say be default I have become an expert in which ones work good and which ones don't. There are a great many to chose from actually, including a lot of $100 generic cleaners. These under $100 cleaners are what we call throw away cleaners. When they break you simply toss them out verses buying new parts, which actually they don't sell the parts anyway.
So there are two basic types of suction cleaners. The geared cleaners and the bouncing type cleaners. I personally prefer the geared type cleaners and have many of those on my pool route. The gear type have a programmed turn cycle that will usually stop one side of the cleaner and allow it to pivot and turn out of corners and step areas. These geared cleaners rarely get stuck in an area in a pool. That is why I prefer them over the bouncing type.
    Geared cleaners:
    Hayward Pool Cleaner
    Hayward AquaNaut
    Hayward Phoenix
    Hayward Navigator/ Pool Vac
    Pentair Rebel
    Pentair Warror
    Zodiac MX-8
    Zodiac MX-6
    Pentair Dorado
    Pentair Great White
    Pentar Sand Shark
The bouncing type cleaners where the first on the market and work really well. Basically they have a diaphragm or hammer in the throat that as water is sucked in the cleaner begins to move. The design gives these cleaners a bouncing motion, which also helps knock surface debris down to the pool floor. But the drawback of these cleaners as they can get stuck in the step areas and in a hard angled corner. The cleaning pattern is also very random but in most cases they do clean most of the pool if it is run long enough.
    Boiuncing Cleaners:
    Pentair Kreepy Krauly
    Pentaitr Kruiser
    Zodiac G3
    Zodiac Wahoo
    Zodiac Ranger
One thing to note, if you have an above ground or in ground vinyl pool or fiberglass pool I would recommend a bouncing type cleaner over the geared type cleaner. The gear type cleaners do poorly in these surface types and may not climb out of the deep end, nor climb the walls. For plaster and PebbleTec pools I recommend the geared type cleaner. And for a tile pool the bouncing type are also far better.

I've got a vinyl pool and got the MX8 elite, 17k gallon pool and a 1.5hp pump, it climbs the walls wonderfully, wasn't actually expecting it to but have been very happy with it.

So my friend has a new kreepy krauly in a concrete kidney pool and it’s not loud in the pool at all and you can’t hear it from a distance. Does this mean his decking is not cement?

Hi - Thanks for all the great pool info - So, what is your current recommendation for suction side cleaner for a 16,000 gallon 7' deep pool with a pebble sheen finish - Don't have excessive debris, just "normal" leaves and seeds from bushes, shrubs and trees - looking to replace a worn out 7 year old MX-8 that has only performed OK - Thanks again

      Try the Hayward PoolCleaner.

My cousins have a pebble Tec pool with a Poolvernuegen 2 wheel model that is about 10 years old and is very old and there gonna get a new cleaner. I told them a Black Max Polaris 360 since they have threaded return lines but they said they don't want to half to empty the bag constantly. Also they only have bushes and a medium size tree ,so they dont get very big debris that they would half to get a pressure cleaner. So then I told them to about a regular Kreepy Krauly since it was one moving part. Do you think I should tell them to replace a Poolvernugen with a Kreepy Krualy? Or just have them get a different type of geared cleaner?

I would just get a new Poolvergnuegen -aka the Hayward Pool Cleaner. If they have a dark Peeble Tec they may want the Limited Edition with the dark body and dark hoses. But I wouldn't go from a geared cleaner to a bouncing one if the geared cleaner is working well. The only thing is the new version won't climb the walls as well so if they like the cleaner coming up to the tile lines the Pentair Rebel would be the way to go.

do you have any recommendation for suction cleaners for tiled pool? thanks. I got Rebel and it doesnt work.

Zodiac MX-8 should climb better than the Rebel in a tile pool.

Keep an eye out for some tyres that are getting released for The Rebel that are in the style of the Hayward one pictured in the video. This is made for specifically attacking the walls of tiled pools

I have a 13,000 gallon in-ground pool in Southern California. Lots of trees around pool. Lots of fine silt and dust in the pool. One third of the pool is a a baja deck that is only 20 inches deep. Our Kreepy Krauly is not effective with the baja deck (it stays in the deep end most of the time). Looking to purchase a suction side cleaner. Considering the Polaris 360 because of fine debris/silt bag. Also considering the Hayward line because you recommend it so highly. Recommendations or insights for my specific scenario would be greatly appreciated.

No suction cleaners will navigate that Baja Deck. You may have some luck with the Polaris 360 going up there on occasion when the backup valve engages. I've seen the regular Polaris pressure side cleaners do this. With the sand-silt bag, the 360 will do a great job with both the leave and dirt.

@@SPL What about a robotic cleaner? I am open to anything besides having to manually clean the baja deck everyday this summer.
BTW... thank you for all the videos. Your channel has been indispensable to me as a first time pool owner.

It's that baja deck that is the problem. Even a Robotic Cleaner will not get up there very often. Maybe send me a photo f your pool when you get a chance.

Do any of these suck up ultra fine dirt? I ask because our new 26,000 gallon in ground white plaster pool was completed and filled at the end of may this year. They included a pentair kreepy krawly legend II pressure side cleaner and the ONLY thing it will pick up are leaves. The back side of our pool is grass up to the coping so heavy rain splashes fine clay soil into the pool. The pentair doesn't touch it at all. I got fed up with that quick and bought a Dolphin S200 and use the ultra fine filters. Now that does an incredible job! Leaves the pool absolutely spotless. Makes me wonder if any of the pressure side or suction side are worth a crap at picking up the super fine stuff or do they all pretty much suck? Love your videos and podcasts man! I am following the TFP formula with our SWG pool and so far after getting every level right on the money the only thing I have to do is add 20oz of muriatic acid once every 3 days. Cant get any easier than that!

Sounds like you have a handle on things. I will be doing a Podcast on Robotic cleaners - I use one myself. But the suction cleaners do pick up dirt very well as opposed to the pressure cleaner you had installed. The Dolphin bots are solid. 👍

I have an MX 8 Elite suction side pool cleaner, 2 years old with a dedicated suction valve. Picks up very fine dirt, climbs walls like a sherpa mountain guide, and looks like a WWI tank in the pool. Easily wins in the looks department. Very fine dirt is not a problem. So suction side cleaners like the MX8 Elite more than hold their own in the cleaning department. I also like the fact that I just leave the cleaner in the pool, I never take it out unless we have a pool party. I just park it in a shallow water landing area. Simple.

One thing I will add about the MX8/10 series cleaners is the fact that they have an engineered fault in the A-side gearbox that slowly wears the parts. Normally we are replacing the gearboxes (particularly the A-side) every 6 months or so. They climb walls really well, however I find that the parts that need replacing turns me away from these models

Note also that the MX8 will jam by oak acorns.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 років тому

Only a handful of suction cleaner can handle acorns.
