  • Gåte was founded by the Sundli siblings - Sveinung and Gunnhild - in 1999. Their unique combination of traditional Norwegian folk music and explosive progressive rock soon took them from a basement rehearsal room to many of the biggest stages in Scandinavia.
Between 2001 - 2006 their spectacular liveshows, two studio albums, two EPs and a live album brought them massive success. They sold more than 100 000 albums, went straight to #1 on the national Top 40 album chart in Norway, and they won the Norwegian Grammy for Best New Act in 2002.
In 2017 the critically acclaimed band returned after a 12-year break. This new incarnation retains the core of the original band - Gunnhild Sundli, Sveinung Sundli, Magnus Børmark - who are now joined by, Jon Even Schärer and Mats Paulsen on drums and bass.
The sibling’s profound passion for traditional Norwegian folk music has always been the base of Gåte's sound and vision, and they continue to create vibrant new music on a foundation of traditional material. At the same time they have an urge to create and compose original songs, and they are producing new material which is allowing them to explore their sound and vision differently but still with roots in the traditional.
The new material has been written in collaboration Knut Buen as lyricist. Knut Buen is already established as the king of the Norwegian Folk Music scene and a master performer on the Hardanger Fiddle, but what many people don't know is that he is also a brilliant storyteller and lyricist.
Following their return, the band released an EP in November 2017. Entitled ‘Attersyn’ (‘revisited’ in Old Norwegian) it offers four new songs, two of them based on traditional pieces and two of them newly written originals. And on 2 November 2018, they released a complete studio album called “Svevn” (Old Norwegian for ‘sleep’). Both the EP and this new album are the result of deep collaboration with Knut Buen. These latest recordings present the remarkable, soundscape of the reborn Gåte - a sound that is both familiar but brand new.. As Gunnhild Sundli puts it: ‘It's good to be back, and it actually feels just as much as a beginning as a continuation’.
    Lyrics:
    hildringsette inni himmelhugen bur,

Gåte’s music is a dark, mesmerizing and stunningly beautiful take on Nordic folk. Where they flirt with elements from traditional Norse and pagan music as well as from more modern genres like rock and industrial.

I would call myself decently versed in nordic folk music but I somehow never heard of this band. What the hell this is so cool.
And it says they've been around since 1999 which makes them among, if not the first modern band of this type!

Gåte had a huge success in the early 2000's, untill they split up in 2005, when the vocalist was tired and wanted to have a normal life. For twelve years I never completely lost hope of them reuniting, and a few concerts now and then kept the light of hope burning. Finally the joy was huge when their return was announced in 2017! I recommend you to check out their early work. They have a lot of great tracks, both new and old.

I cannot believe that this band was even considered for Eurovison by Norway? It was always destined to get no points, given that its music isn't the usual throwaway, eurovision, camp cheese. I'm glad they were, though, because I have found a new favourite band, even if I haven't got a clue what the lyrics mean.

Ok so I did some research and judging by the translation of the lyrics, this song is about the Huldra, a creature from Norwegian folklore. Her attributes are different depending on the source, but she's usually depicted as a seductive female spirit with antlers, a cow's tail and a distinctive hollow back reminiscent of a hollowed out tree. Huldra are also found in Swedish folklore as Skogsrået, who are said to lure people into the forest, where they're never seen again.

I've been working on it with my limited Norwegian and the pronunciation and some of the words are really throwing me. Is this an older variant of Norsk or dialectual? I love the music, the voice, the whole everything... but i dont see pole dancing in it all.. an etheral dance in the forest with a delicate dress, or no dress at all- yes... the dancer got the right moves for it... it doesnt match the picture of the whole thing in my head at least. i belive pole dancing is the thing now.... great music, great voice, love it all anyway

      @Skrerosgaldrer 4 роки тому +11

The mighy magical hulder is seductive and beautiful. So, I think a pole dancing hulder is for sure a good setting in the modern world. Hypnotising - untouchable, always beautiful - but we never know who she fully is? Watch out - Is there a hollow back to be seen? Spin, spin - or walk and roam in the woods? For me it does not matter. Huldra - some sort of a "subterranean queen"? She is mythical - so there is no excat answer. What I do know - the lady of the forest is roaming free ... in the woods, in the folk tales, in our culture and in our heritage.
Old mythology and painters had their version - Gåte have their own. I am an old black metal man - but still have a really soft spot for a "hulder tale". I grew up with stories from our Norse world - including this magical female phenomenon. I do not get offended or hurt if there is a pole included - that is how Gåte sees the old meeting the new world...
Folktales/walking legend - or just a statement from the mythologi about the great world of seidr? Pole or no pole - huldra is like a magical practise that set the tone, without people able to touch or reach the magical beauty roaming in the woods. This might be why christian people marched against all kind of folk tales - or was scared about the power of what people had in their heart and mind from generation to generation. The christians labeling women as witches and set them on fire. They could burn "witches" - but how to burn huldra?
