One of the reasons the wolf is more successful and widely spread is its natural timidness, another reason why the wolf is careful here is because canines are not as good climbers as felines are, so a wolf will always feel more uncomfortable on a narrow tree like that. Also the weight of its body may have caused the dry grass behind its back to rustle, startling it.
