I am a Live Sound Man/Studio Engineer. I was taught years ago that people who are stage ready sometimes are not ready for studio and/or can work in the studio don’t mean they’re stage ready. I was taught it was about stage presence and engaging with the people to keep their attention.
Curtis is a blessing to UA-cam. I learn SO much everyday about the music industry and the ins and outs of it because of Curtis. If Curtis has one million fans, I am one of them. If Curtis has ten fans, I am one of them. If Curtis has only one fan, then that is me. If Curtis has no fans, I am dead. If the world is against Curtis, I am against the world.
Performing is my favorite part! Being from a small city/island in Hawai’i, I don’t get a lot of exposure but it’s also given me a lot of time to work on my live performance. It’s definitely a skill that a lot of aspiring artists under estimate. It takes alot of practice (not to mention all the marketing and ticket selling challenges).
Great content man. It’s funny and also informative. I play bass with a band and I’m in the back, I don’t even want anyone to see me hahaha. But I dance, and I enjoy myself, I pay attention to what I wear, how I appear and make sure my mind is focused on the music. People sometimes come up to me and tell me they see me and they enjoy watching me enjoy and express myself. But there’s a strategy in what I’m doing and a pure intention. You need to remember those two things when you’re performing in front of an audience. Strategy and intention.
bro, what a content! So proud to see your evolution and your channel. Everytime i get lost in my carrer i come back and watch something that makes me feel "get up your ass right now and do something to change". Much love, brother
Back in August I went to the Newport Jazz Fest in Rhode Island, and I had an amazing time. Everyone I saw including Thundercat and Anderson .Paak were phenomenal, and what made their performances so great to me was not only are they extremely talented musicians but they also had lots of stage presence, they interacted well with the fans, and they both had a strong intro and outro to their shows.
This resonates so well he is spot on. My first band back in 2006 we were all about those things we only had MySpace. No excuse for not making loyal fans today we have too many tools.
Now i understands that scene n the movie "that thing u do" where tom hanks is teaching the band what 2 do their 1st show w/the label n he says run off stage. Guy asks "well what if they want an encore" n Hanks starts yelling "u run, RUN off the stage like ur life depends on it"
professional DJ here with 600+ shows out the SFV (LA) mostly local hip hop shows . Having a good Dj backing you absolutely sets you a part from most acts. Especially when they are actually djing/on the mic(not on their phone). Djing in hip hop is a dying art so when people see a Dj is scratching or doing volume drops at appropriate times its magic. Build w/ someone that actually wants DJ not just get your homie in for free.
Gavin DeGraw stays after his small concerts and talks sometimes and I love seeing him for that. He's an excellent performer too, but I just love how he treats his fans. He's so grateful and humble. People don't need an illusion of Hollywood. We don't even like Hollywood. We like to give our hard earned money to people we like. I don't go to rap concerts even though I used to listen to rap. Their concerts are dangerous and vulgar.
I went to the Final Lap tour (Busta Rhymes & 50 Cent) in St. Paul 2 weeks ago and they put on a SHOW! You would’ve sworn you were at Wrestlemania the way 50 made his entrance especially for What up Gangsta. Lights, Pyro, crowd going nuts 10/10 concert
The new rappers yes ,they suck because they don't have any actual talent, they popular, big difference this is also why old school hip hop artists and concerts are doing way better ❤
Truely some nice bars at the end 🔥 Curtis, I understand your point about Green Day and apart from some songs I'm not a fan of them either, however for some people they might be their very first touch of seeing people playing instruments live and this can be really inspiring for people to go out and buy instruments. From a producer's or rapper's standpoint I understand seeing musicians play can be boring even more if you don't even play an instrument at all but this also depends which band you're watching and I think Green Day might not be a good example at that moment for you. For me personally, it's more than seeing people playing their instruments. I check their gear, the connection between the musicians, how they perform the songs ( do they make any changes or not), their interaction with the crowd, what extra's do they add to the show like pyrotechnics or whatever, clothing etc... there's so much going on sometimes. There are so many great live bands, please don't get stuck with Green Day. There are great rock bands and rock bands that suck. And there are rap acts that are amazing but also rap acts that suck as well. In fact, I even saw bands with good songs suck when they play live and other bands with bad songs just killing it on stage 🤷
Thank you fam! Valid points all around. And to be fair they were my first rock show years ago. But since then I’ve seen so many amazing bands. My point wasn’t even that I was bored, but more that I found myself distracted even with all of the normal show effects and theatrics.
I must say I'm a lil embarrassed that I just started watching these great discussion videos. I usually just watch the cook ups but now I'm seeing just how beneficial it is to get these jewels too! Shout out to you and your team for comin wit the fresh new takes on this stuff 💪🏿🛠
Bring your own Engineer if they don't have a scheduled Sound Check before the show. I've had times where I could've sworn the sound guy Deliberately turned my mic down or EQ'd me Different just to F*** with me or bc someone put him up to it.
This is why Melle Melle is better thsn current rappers because their whole shit was live performance and cold crush bros . The only rap show is last 15 years thst I saw as great was Busts rhymes 2009 live with Roc Raida (rip) as his dj
Hiphop wasnt made for the arena. Only hiphop which is heavily infused with rock, pop, edm/dance do well in huge arena's because those infused genre's arena sound.
A lot of y’all vocalist will over track every line and not think about breathing at all, makes for a damn near impossible performance when you got full breath on every line 😂😂😂😂
I totally relate 2 hating when rappers "karaoke" their love shows. Also dont like when r&b singers sing their songs n a lowernoctive then the original record. If u cant hit that note live then dont record it
Judging a recording artist as a live performer is not right. Recording artists work in the studio. A recording artist with the skills of a live performer is a plus
Can’t worry about that young audience when it come to shows. All you can depend on is streams from them. I really don’t know what everyone does that they can’t listen to music as adults. I’m grown and listen to music all day everyday.
I noticed a lot of rappers will start their lyrics full intensity, leaving them nowhere to take the rest of the song or set. So a lot of nuance is lost in the lack of finesse. Its like a rock song starting at the crescendo and just trying to maintain that intensity for their entire song/set.
The worst shows I've ever seen is them damn lyrical, miracle, spiritual cats. I'm a lyrics guy but they often lack the stage presence to rock a crowd. As an actual musician that took the time to learn the craft it's hard to watch a guy on stage spitting bars to his own backtrack with no energy. Another beef I have is dudes gripping the shit out of their mics at the top. You sound like your spitting under water, also slightly pull it away from you. Lastly these cats need to stop cheaping out on their sound check. If you sound like ass I'll likely never come out of my pockets to support you again.
I PROMISE! People who ACTUALLY Go to hip hop concerts DO NOT CARE ABOUT RAPPING OVER SONGS! Only hip hop purists care about that shit. That 23 year old who came to have a good time, or who loves your music so much it saved their life. They don't care... they're happy to be in the experience.
When I see all the hottest rappers in the underground and mainstream stop rapping over lyrics, I will believe that factor actually matters. But I've been to Rolling Loud, Lollapalooza, Summer Jam, SxSW as well as various shows across the country, and open mics and the only people who have said something about the rapping over the lyrics are 30+ in age. And most rappers music is not for that age demographic. They don't want to rage, moshpit, twerk etc.
My biggest issue with live rap concerts is how muffled and muddy the lyrics are. Almost universally. This could be lack of mic control, and/or poor sound man skills. And almost always 2 or 3 other dudes on a mic trying to hype the crowd by just yelling a word or 2.
23:55 what was he wrong about? you give your name and your social links? 10 minutes ago he said to repeat those things 10 times over the set... AND Y'ALL AGREED!! 🤷♂
Incorrect. Repeating your name is considered brand reinforcement and recognition, not a call to action. A call to action, as mentioned in your timestamp, is what you want the people to do or buy once they know your name.
Rap music is for the studio and realistically can't be recreated in a live setting 95% of the time. Majority of rap concerts are just artist ab libbing to a back track and hyping up the crowd.
Why is the host talking like that? It sounds like he is putting on and playing a character of what he thinks a rapper should sound like. Like..it sounds very, very practiced and deliberate.
All rap concerts suck. It's just a guy rapping over his song played what sounds like iTunes and his hype man just yelling the entire time. Always always always sounds like shit. I have yet to hear a rap concert sound good. Rap is meant to be enjoyed by hearing it from their album and not live.
You caught me. I'm exposed. I'm a rapper that hates rappers. Lol your logic ain't logic'n big dawg. Why would I say "Singers" suck as performers when 90% of my audience is rappers or producers? Secondly, we DO SUCK and we need to do better.
One of my first influences was Pac. I still study his stage performances to this day. My biggest musical fear is giving a bad performance.

There is 1 reason rap concerts are terrible....and it is that rap concerts are essentially karaoke shows. Seriously. That is the real problem..
Great content man. It’s funny and also informative. I play bass with a band and I’m in the back, I don’t even want anyone to see me hahaha. @@CurtissKingTV If you’re able to you should definitely check it out! Great music, great food and it’s right on the water as well

Way too many! 💯
Always go to Curtis when I want more information about the music industry 🫡

"an independent artist that's redefining the hustle" 🔥🔥🔥
Never heard Curtis rhyme that was dope and the message was mad on point along with dope production and the beat was tight too respect bro!!!!
This is great content right here. Thank you! Lots of perspective.
The new rappers yes ,they suck because they don't have any actual talent, they popular, big difference this is also why old school hip hop artists and concerts are doing way better ❤

y'all old heads over look sooo many great talents from this generation with that snob mentality smh
that's why most underground or other active artists that have energy have amazing shows. Gotta peep a show from a GKFAM artist imo, always lit
Hiphop wasnt made for the arena. Only hiphop which is heavily infused with rock, pop, edm/dance do well in huge arena's because those infused genre's arena sound.
AGREED!
Here from the future. Sza and Kendrick are doing stadiums. Depends on the artist.
My god...I love this man, he is speaking facts. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
A lot of y’all vocalist will over track every line and not think about breathing at all, makes for a damn near impossible performance when you got full breath on every line 😂😂😂😂
I'm glad Damien Keys mentioned Muse. That's a band creates an experience. Look no further than their live recording 'Live in Rome Olympic Stadium'.
Make a video regarding are artist tying to sell music for art or if they are selling music to gain people to buy merch only like is there a balance!!!
Jay is funny man 😭😭😭

Drake's 2 day show got postponed for October 1 & 2.
I guarantee them tickets ain't selling 🤷🏾♂️
Funny how Drake is the thumbnail and his live show is average.

but its true!
Why is the host talking like that? It sounds like he is putting on and playing a character of what he thinks a rapper should sound like. Like..it sounds very, very practiced and deliberate.
AND YOU RAP ABOUT KILLING PEOPLE. You ain’t gotta take that back at all. It’s too true and too awful.
Two rappers who have no hits and suck doing a podcast.

Can we kill the term "rapper"?
What would you replace it with?
