  • Curiously, this water escape is done not by Sabine van Diemen herself as was advertised but done by her assistant Abilene René Burics.

Wow she's up there with Dayle Krall and Donna Purnell! Music starting at 9:01 on sounds like an MCU theme

Found out the reason abilene was doing the escape was because sabine had food poisoning

there was a small thing that i did not get, why did they start the clock when Abilene was already 30 seconds underwater. Its bizar that this girl can do an escape almost 4 minutes under water with no curtains on. So no trick there if you ask me.

I'd imagine someone behind the scenes screwed up and didn't start the timer when she got into the tank.

@@femmeescape In motion picture production stunt work, the accepted practice is that no performer is supposed to be underwater for more than 30 seconds. In MAN FROM ATLANTIS, Patrick Duffy would stay underwater for as long as 2 minutes, but that wasn't encouraged. In this act she was under 3:40 which was probably 10 seconds longer than planned. As there was some genuine risk doing this stunt, that is probably why Sabine didn't do it herself. The production insurer probably objected. ;-)

Hmmm... I don't want to spoil anyone's party and I do not want to insult the artists, as I genuinely think this is a great and exciting act. But I do have my reasons to think there IS some trickery to it. 3:40 is a long time to really hold your breath for in this stressful situation: being shackled underwater, locked up in a glass cage as the whole audience watches you, let alone having to escape the chains and padlocks, while moving dramatically as she does, using up precious oxygen even faster because of the moving. It definitely takes some serious mental training and some rigorous breathhold training for safety. This being said, there is a lot of drama and acting, even (and espcially I should say) until the very last moment of the act / "breathhold": look at her hands when they are above (outside) the tank. That's done deliberately of course, to make us believe she is really suffering and having a very hard time. But it's a bit too much acting in my opinion: it looks too "controlled" (especially on the last moments of the act). Of course, there is some genuine breathholding, especially when she goes under for the first time (that's what the breathhold training is absolutely needed for), but I do not think she was actually holding her breath uninterrupted the whole time for almost 4 minutes. Let me point out the elephant in the room: the metal "structure" of the glass tank, which has equally high horizontal bands of around 20-25 cm (almost one foot). You can easily hide your head (face) behind these bands. The thing is: it's very clever that they made ALL those bands this high (equally high): like that, it doesn't stand out that the top band just below the lid is higher than the others: they're ALL 20-25 cm high. I'm pointing this out as I have seen tanks like this where the top band was clearly higher than the others below it: it was obvious the escape artist was breathing there from time to time, hiding his/her head/face behind the top band where there was an air space. As for THIS tank and the amount of water in it: I suspect it is indeed filled with water to the top for real to begin with, but notice as the lady drops into the water: she doesn't do it softly or slowly, but rather fast and aggressively. Like that, not every one takes notice consciously of the amount of water clearly spilling out of the tank, which does make an airspace between the closed lid and the lower edge of the top metal band. And what's more: she shouldn't even enter the tank this fast/aggressively if the tank is really filled to the top before she drops: when the tank is filled to the top, the amount of water spilling out of it would be the volume of her body entering the tank. But I suspect she drops this fast not only for the drama, but also we wouldn't take notice too much there is water spilling out of the tank. It's very clever. But...We can almost be certain there is an airspace just below the lid. And as the lid has openings to put your hands through, it is also open to fresh air. Notice how the lady's face is behind the top metal band at least 4 times during the whole act. And notice how slowly/softly she puts her head there. We don't get a good close up of her head when she does that, do we? The camera zooms in on her hands, not her head/face on these occasions. Of course, they want us to believe she really holds her breath for this long, but I doubt it. However, it's very well done as an act and most people will probably believe it. I do suspect they did a lot of research to design this tank: when you drop into the tank, the water shouldn't spill out too much so the water level doesn't come below the lower edge of the top band which would give away the whole trick... AND at the same time the water should spill out enough to create an airspace that's big (read: high) enough to actually breathe in. With all this, I'm not saying the act is an easy one. Drowning is still on the top list of most people's primal fears. I'm sure - even with all the safety measures, training and what I describe above - the artists are still genuinely nervous. And they should be. There IS a certain amount of danger to it. It's really well done alltogether.

@@jodecaesteker3971 I get your point when this act is done behind curtains, most escape artists ( illusionists ) prefer doing this with a curtain closed. So then you have lots of possibilities to trick the audience. But when the curtains are open, you ( not a illusionis, but a stuntwoman ) have a full sight, its gonna be freaking hard too trick the audience, there is even a watertank act here on youtube with a well known escape artist that went completely wrong, i think she called her self miss houdini. she does the same act, but here see ran out of oxegen, where assistants have to help her out while she was drowning and came unconsious and almost died on the spot. show is over and the ambulance came. i think at that point, this is not a tricky act, but serious business. its easy to believe something is fake, but it is more fun to believe that something is real. i rather see a stunt then a illusion if you know what i mean.
this is the act that went wrong, terrible wrong, warning...its shocking...

@Neil's Staking Journey - student loan pay off exactly! I missed it. It confirms my theory. Sorry if I revealed some secrets...

Is the announcer being a little sexist here when she mention "no man alive is willing to repeat this stunt"
