  • Dockside 0-6-0T locomotives were developed during the early 1900's to operate in heavy industrial operations throughout America. USA Trains has produced a model based on an American Locomotive Company (ALCO) dockside that was built August 1910. At least that's the information on the locomotive's well detailed builders plate.
This is a video that LSOL.com members got to see first. If you are an LSOL.com membner come and see JD Miller give you his exclusive Outside/In! on this engine and see what is really inside. It is as close as you can come to seeing it in person. Well maybe closer as we take you inside, which no one else does.

It took Hornby a couple of decades and a bit of competition to realise that they should be building model trains rather than toy trains. American manufacturers were doing this long before Hornby. But yeah, you gotta love the classic look of British locomotives.

Too bad they didn't use a Phoenix Sound System, personally I found that factory sound system inadequate and sounds more like a shooting gun than a steam loco, the whistle and bell, not too bad, but overall that sound system needs to go.
And for the price of that USAT loco and it being die cast metal, why skimp on the sound and smoke system in it?
And in the video the reviewer states "add a small fan to the smoke unit", the smoke unit in that loco IS NOT fan driven at all, but air driven by one of the drivers and a piston configuration, if it were actually fan driven the smoke output would be so much better and stronger, even at lower {start up} speed.
If I opted to buy one, both the sound system and smoke unit would have to be replaced with a Phoenix Sound system, as well as an actual fan driven smoke unit. Piston driven smoke units just can't cut it like the true fan driven units do.

After 4:40, did you say it should serve them "for about a year's dependable service"?
