  • I had read about this new product... a battery operated g-scale locomotive from Piko that greatly simplifies the process of removing oxidation from train tracks that have been left outdoors. I almost ordered one myself, but it was a good thing that I didn't because I ended up getting sent one for free!
    In this video, I'll tell you the whole story of how Ken Bianco Jr, of Trainworld in New York, came to discover my UA-cam channel and become a fan of mine! In fact, he's the first fan to ever send me a gift... and it was a pretty great gift. I was already a fan of Ken Bianco Jr, from having seen him in videos on Trainworld's UA-cam channel... so it was great finding out that he admired my model train videos and appreciated the success I'm having with several of my videos getting in excess of a million views.
    But the question is... does this product do what it's supposed to do... remove the oxidation that builds up on brass track that is left outside in the weather. I put it through a serious test... cleaning the tracks that run along the side of my house, and which stay outside permanently. I always have trouble with oxidization of those rails, and usually have to run fine sandpaper over them before being able to use them. So, it was easy for me to determine if this track cleaning locomotive worked or not... and it definitely worked!
    If you're interested in ordering a Piko clean machine, go to Trainworld.com and search for Piko 38501, or simply "Piko Clean Machine".

    FYI: never use sandpaper! It will grove the rail & promote oxidation & corrosion. What has worked well in the past is a drywall sander pad (looks like a sponge mop without the sponge) with a Scotch Bright pad installed or this little loco. The cleaning pads on this loco are the same as the Scotch Bright pads, just a lot smaller. This is the loco I own & works well. I used to work at Trainland in Lynbrook, NY. Had fun there & Ken Jr. seems to have brought the business into the 21st century. I tell ya, the employees used to pay for the privilege of working there, that's how much train stuff we bought. 99% of my collection came for Trainworld/Trainland. All the guys there were highly knowledgeable in model trains, either had very large layouts, had a large collection, or were in clubs. I myself still in HO & G scale clubs. I get into how they work, improving how work & building them more than running trains.

    Hi Jim, My name is Alan Stewart and just saw your video. I know Ken Jr. & Ken Sr. from Train world very well. (I live in Long Island). I have a huge outdoor layout in my upstate, NY home (I was featured in the Garden Layouts magazine last year) and what you basically described in your video with the oxidation is exactly what happens with my layout. I was talking with Ken Sr (and Junior) this past Thursday and told him of my problem when he recommended the "Clean Machine" and coincidentally I just happen to look on Google to find out some reviews and came to your video. (small World). I will be by the store this week to pick up a clean machine (or 2) and will tell them them I saw your video. Keep up the good work. A. Stewart

    You now have five G scale locomotives from Piko!
    They are the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway steam locomotive #707, the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway steam locomotive #52, the North Pole Express Christmas steam locomotive #25, the Piko Clean Machine and the General Electric 25-Ton diesel switcher locomotive #21 in the Santa Fe Railway Warbonnet paint scheme!
    What are you going to get next for your G scale model train collection?
    Let me know when you reply to me and I'll understand and be honest with you.
    As always I am Thomas Comeau signing off for today and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!

    Hi there Jim Zim! Great videos, my favorite are the train videos as I am a fellow model train enthusiast, although I work with O scale. Your narration is excellent and possibly the best part of these videos! Keep up the great work!

    I work for a restaurant with a layout, and the track itself is EXTREMELY dirty (soot and buildup)! I’m back and forth between this critter and an LGB track cleaner. In your eyes, Jim, what benefits does this have over LGB’s?

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  9 місяців тому

      The biggest advantage is price. This Piko product comes in at about 1/3 the price of a LGB track cleaning locomotive.
      The other big difference is that this unit is battery operated... so, it doesn't need to get power from the rails to operate. The LGB track cleaning locomotive requires power from the rails. This could be an advantage or a disadvantage... just depends on your particular situation.

    Are you going to get the Union Pacific Clean Machine manufactured by LGB to add to your collection of G scale model trains or not?

      No, I don't see the need for two track cleaning locomotives.

    • @thomascomeau9271
      @thomascomeau9271 3 роки тому +1

      @@JimZim I understand that one track cleaning locomotive is good enough.
      But two or more track cleaning locomotives? Well, then that is too much.
      You can keep the Piko Clean Machine, the yellow battery operated track cleaning steam locomotive that has a set of two little red abrasive pads or shoes that can clean off the oxidation that builds up on top of the G scale model train tracks that have been left outside in the weather all year long, for a couple of months, or for a couple of weeks with no G scale model trains running on them.
      Well anyway, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you.

    • @thomascomeau9271

      You can keep the Piko Clean Machine that will scrape off the oxidation that builds up on top of the G scale model train tracks that have been left outside in the weather all year long, for a few months, or for a few weeks with no G scale model trains running on them.
      When you try to run the G scale model trains on the oxidized brass metal train tracks, they can't make a good electrical connection where they will run very jerky and then stop all together.
      But the Piko Clean Machine and the Union Pacific Clean Machine by LGB and more G scale track cleaning locomotives, well that is too much.
      As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!
      Enjoy your new house in Washington state!

    Hello Jim , i have a question about this cleaning loco , i know that it is only battery powered , so , do you have to shut down the power on the tracks while it is working , and can you leave it on powered tracks when other locos are running ? Seems that the metal wheels could interfer with the battery pack ??

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  5 років тому

      I use LGB brass track. Indoors, you probably won't have problems with oxidation, and you probably won't need a track cleaner... unless you go months without running the trains.

      I don't think Piko makes any cars specifically for it, but the LGB 4044 is a pretty good match for it.
