    First off, glad to see you. You're handsome and the voice is super smooth and relaxing while you inform so, thank you for showing yourself. You caught my attention because of your excellent comparison and taste videos, which stand out in all of UA-cam and really make you a star. Okay, onward...No one seems to believe me, even though I can prove it, concerning how my Mexicola Grande and Pinkerton both have grown 15' in one year. I checked for the pH requirement and had to adjust down to 5.0 with sulfur and pine needle compost. Next, I water every other day. That's basically it. Check the pH, water well and keep about two feet of organic material on top to trickle down. The only other secret is planting them 3' part and allowing them to grow together. In Florida, we must spray insect soap on the leaves every month or a leaf eater will cause nasty little brown spots near center of the leaves.

    Have you thought about trying an inline filter in your irrigation system to filter out the chloride?

    • @moniquemonicat
      @moniquemonicat 4 роки тому

      That would be the answer. Also for the salt. It's both salt and chloride that chokes the avocado tree.

      Use pieces of Red bricks inseted of stand in the soil and use less water and maintain moisture.
      Direct water should not touch roots(new borned roots)

    Use a Carbon Filter for Chlorine city water. Change it based on usage and size. Problem solved. I only use the carbon filter for the garden plants. However my $50 refrigerator filter does the same.

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  6 років тому +4

      Apparently, while carbon filters remove chlorine, they don't remove chloride. And it's the chloride ion that is toxic to avocados. I say apparently because I'm not a chemist, but this is what I've gathered from my best attempt at amateur research.
      It so happens that I have installed a carbon filter on the pipe leading to some of my avocados because chlorine is no good for them either. But it's only been there for a few months. We'll see if I can notice any improvement in a year or so.

      Chlorides likes to bond with many elements. NaCl (table salt), Potassium Cl, Calcium Chloride etc.. The method used by many is to mix in 20 Lbs of Gypsum to counteract any salts that may be in the soil. I add gypsum just to be sure. It does not harm anything. You can put it on the top soil over the roots and let it leech over time. I like this guys method. ua-cam.com/video/FkpqBHV0xmg/v-deo.html

    • @rponcec

      leave it, if you prune, the new leaves are going to take all the energy that has to go to fruiting

    I have avocado trees growing inside 25 gallon planters. Now, Japanese Clover is growing in the soil around the trunk base in each planter. Is this dangerous to the avocado trees, or does the clover act more like mulch?

    How do we fix the chloride issue?? It happens to me with every cycle of leaf growth, and the tree is healthy otherwise -- new leaves forming, fruit is growing at a healthy rate, etc. Have I over-fertilized it? I had always thought the leaf browning was from the hot summer and the drought and not watering it enough, but it's happening every may, Florida's one dry/scorching month. Would love some advice if you have any!!

      maybe the chloride is from the water company, if using ground water should free from chloride

    I live in the California Central Valley My question is how hot does it have to be to put the shade screens on, sunscreen paint, and how cold does it have to be to cover in plastic? I have a Pinkerton Avocado tree. I killed a Jim Bacon it over heated and scorched.

      I'm in Tucson. My general rule is shade cloth for 95F and over. My avocado gets 90F or less full morning sun. During afternoon 95F or over = use filtered sun - or 80% shade cloth. Best to plant or keep tree on the East or North side of house so that the blistering afternoon sun is automatically blocked. Another good thing is to keep avocado tree behind a mango or other tree that causes natural filtered sun later in the day. But here in Tucson hot my avocado gets full morning sun til about 11:30am. Then when it goes up to 105 degrees it is under my umbrellas and shade cloth.
      Since you are in Central Calif you won't have literal fire coming down on your tree like we do in Arizona, so probably the same would do good for you: full morning sun til 11:30am or 1pm. After 1pm shade, if using shade cloth then at least 80% in afternoon. But mornings let him basque in full sun at least til noon.
      Use distilled water to flush all the salt and chloride out at least for one week per month. When avocado trees dry out the salt and chloride especially choke it. Your Pinkerton is not really for cold. If you want a tree that does good in cold, try MEXICOLA AVOCADO can survive winter in 18F even, however, this is less tolerant of sun than the Pinkerton is. Try umbrella and cover it with a blanket or plastic in that way it doesn't touch the tree. Or if you can bring it in on any freezes. Sorry I don't know Pinkerton that well, our Mexicola likes cold but has more difficult with heat.

      My small has avocado tree look just like this... it looks all brown leaves.... im in Ca , april
      And summer is coming... i have this tree in a pot(big pot) and i need to know if i need to move the tree once summer is here to give it just a little bit of sun or shade?
      Im also watering this tree from my kitchen hoses, that water is filtered tho...

    • @gregalderdotcom
      @gregalderdotcom  6 років тому +1

      Full sun is probably best, but it does depend on where you live. If it's often over 100, then I'd put it in partial shade for the summer.

      Hi Jan,
      It doesn't spread like that. There's no benefit in removing the brown tips except if that improves the appearance of the tree for you.

    • @gregalderdotcom

      They produce leaves in flushes, and there are usually three per year in Southern California: one in early spring, one in early summer, and one in early fall.

    • @moniquemonicat
      @moniquemonicat 4 роки тому +1

      Our water is so strong chloride and salt (Tucson) we use distilled water. Get a cheap water distiller and make your own distilled water. Give 2 gal every other day (for 3'x3' area). We have ours in a 20 gal pot and give ours 1.5 gal every other day. If you want you can use tap or hose water for 2-3 weeks and just the distilled to flush all salt and chloride for 1 week. Since we started doing distilled water all leaves are shiny green and no more brown tips. It's been almost a month now.

  • @MangoAficionado
    @MangoAficionado 4 роки тому +1

    that's silly, that's a mature healthy tree, avocado trees renew their leaves every year after summer and that's the way they look ,that's perfectly normal.

    • @moniquemonicat
      @moniquemonicat 4 роки тому +3

      Healthy but depending on where it's being grown. For hot arid places it is not acceptable to have any salt or chloride build up. After we started using distilled water our tree only puts out shiny green leaves now and they don't turn brown on tips and we are in the land of the burning sun: Tucson Arizona. We give morning sun til 11:30am then shade rest of day. Our temps average 105 every day summer, many days 110-112F. Our water is heavily salt and chloride, you can smell the chlorine in our water running the shower it is so bad. Leaves are like hair, excess minerals go out through them, so they are like filters. Probably salt/chloride build up with brown tips won't hurt avocado trees in other states, but dry arid infernos like Tucson or Phoenix it does because the sun dries the moisture leaving salt more prevalent.
