Hey Nate, it’s Nate. Always great to see instructional videos that are well presented and to the point. But I have to say this is not the easy way lol. It’s a way alright, but the easiest… Put you’re multimeter on ohms (the little horseshoe looking one for those who might not know) and with the coil out put the red lead on the + metal pin in the coil and black on the - pin. No need for all those extra wires. Still great video my friend Nate.
So you have your primary winding then your secondary winding that also needs to be checked to verify if it’s in spec there’s a cold specification as well as a hot specification of the car was just running everything is warm to hot & all coils will have a different spec the need to be within so make sure you look up your vehicle/engines specification checking the primary winding like this with a meter is fine check the secondary by moving the positive to where the spark plug would go on a coil over plug system it where the plug wire goes….another way to do this is with a oscilloscope so you can visually see the wave produced but either way will work fine overall good video thanks for sharing
Ok . The end of the first test was unclear . Once you put the alligator clips on . What is the meter supposed to read if its good . Do I assume if its bad . It'll test at 0 ohm ??? Good point in the right direction but the end of the test is a little off
It would be helpful if you put time tags in the description for the various steps, thanks for taking the time to make the video. ( this was a constructive criticism how-to for the professional commentators on here )
So, take the coil & plug out, put the spark plug back in the coil, take a multimeter & hook the positive to the spark plug and the negative to a ground and watch for a spark?
I like your videos don’t let the negative comments get you down bro! I am subscribing! Just a word on ohm coils… in some cases it doesn’t put it under enough stress and heat.. so in some cases the coil will 0HM fine and still misfire. So if you ohm And it still has a misfire after you put everything back together change the coils around and see if the misfire moves using a Scan Tool.
I have a 1995 lexus sc400. it looks like it has wires running to the spark plugs. It has been sitting for 4 years. So I drained the old gas and put 5 gallons of fresh new gas. My car is having a hard time starting. its cranks and cranks before it turns over. Sometimes it takes several tries. It started and ran perfectly fine for 30 minutes or so at normal operating temp. Shortly after, the temp gauge started to rise slightly and the car just shut off. Hard to start again, would crank but not start. do you know what it could be?
Hello, I'm a Nissan Tiida owner, and I'm encountering acceleration issues. I've replaced the spark plugs, air filters, transmission fluid, engine fluid, and the Fuel Assembly, but the problem persists. I haven't diagnosed the ignition coil yet, so I'm wondering if one of the coils might be faulty. For example, when I was in traffic with my foot on the brake, and I released the brake and pressed the gas, the car surged for a second and then settled. I noticed this tends to occur when the vehicle is cold. It mostly happens at low speeds. What could be causing this issue?
I can tell you got a lot to teach and youre a great teacher. But get you a speech coach brother that could be the investment of a lifetime for yiu bro no hate at all i wanna see you at the scotty Kilmer level! Much love from los angeles

Thanks. I’ll have to look up the go/ no go resistance for a 14 mustang 3.7l v6 coil and test em. It’s running kinda rich, I wondering if I’m getting full spark ⚡️
Yes turn the key and let the engine turn over repeatedly. But make sure the fuel injectors are disabled. Check your owners manual in the fuses section and remove the fuses for injectors and fuel pump.
wtf? i have never watched a video and felt so confused.. you *didn't* really explain anything.. there was like 12 different takes done for the multimeter.. that took the 1st 7 minutes of a 9 minute video.. and you didn't say anything... (that was 9 minutes of my life i will never get back.. ).. my coil has 3 metal tabs.. you coulda explained more.. like what the tabs are.. did polarity matter.. and what readings are good and what is considered bad? resistance per winding.. and not all multimeters have a "horseshoe" symbol.. i think u meant "ohms".. what about multiple windings ?????? so many questions unanswered..
This is only for two pin coils. Testing most three and/or four pin connections like this will not work because of the transistor in the coil. If you were to use this method on most three and four pin coils it will make it look like the coil is bad when it's not.
because if there's a hydrogen gas leak from the battery, the spark could cause an explosion. Same reason why when jumping a car to start you set the ground up on the block or such, not the battery.
This was a struggle to watch. You didn't start testing the coil till 6mins in. Then you went through a tutorial on how you use a multimeter. Jesus Christ just get to the point man.
Yes it is definitely a southeastern accent. I'm from Georgia, people that sound like this are considered "country". A lot of times they're some of the nicest people and will go out of their way to help someone. As a teen I met a few girls on the beach who had me spend about an hour saying different things because they had never heard the accent before.
Can you test a coil on a shop bench by alligator clipping the coil terminals to a 110v-12V converter or 12V battery, and clip the spark plug strap to another alligator clip going to the ground in the wall socket?
That's not any where near an accurate test of newer vehicle ignition s.. The coil on plug is a solid state system is reliant on SPECIFIC VOLTAGE ,ONCE AGAIN SPECIFIC VOLTAGE. By all means just jump the coil ou5 to ground..you'll get a spark. Of varing colors.. Btw do you know what a bright red yellow spark means? Or bright blue purple color what it means.. Any ways Wyatt Booger. Don't ever ground Cop coils .. Unless you want to buy new ones. If your not measure the spark on a scope. Your only verifying that you have spark. You can't tell the over all scope or tru ampmeter . to verify your meeting the systems voltage requirements..
All my coil overs failed intermittently. Ohms tests passed. Hand generated spark test passed. In the engine under load TOTAL CRAP OUT..!! Unplugging each one while engine idling helps sometimes. If no obvious drop in power or rough idling begins them that coil is doing nothing. Don't be a cheapass Charlie. Just replace them all. Your family's safety to get them out and back home again depends on you doing the job right...
@@cannonbrooker515 Exactly. Remove the Negative cable off the battery, and then the battery is disconnected AND there is no danger. Then, proceed with working on the electronics of a vehicle.
Sorry, but you have as well have your hands inside a black box, whilst you are talking over the procedures, in other words, known one can see what you are doing Mr Spence Eng
wouldn't checking continuity across the coil have been better ? as far as the multimeter was concerned ... also you could have used a simple grounded test light to check the spark gap for testing the spark plug... a lot of issues in this video bro... since you haven't learned how to use that fluke multimeter, send it on down this way bro...
This was great, thank you!

You have come along way Nate. Your videos you are producing in 2022 are top notch. You have become way more comfortable with doing these videos.

I watched this and still don’t know how to check a coil, maybe because I fell asleep twice.
🤣🤣🤣
This is one of my first videos and editing. I want to improve lets use positivity and kindness.

Good point in the right direction but the end of the test is a little off
So for the first test it should be 1.8 Ohm or around that. But what is the second test about? How to detemine the plug is good or bad? 🤔
Thank you for taking your time help others….I appreciate your hard work🙂👍
It would be helpful if you put time tags in the description for the various steps, thanks for taking the time to make the video. ( this was a constructive criticism how-to for the professional commentators on here )
Maybe do a new video checking primary and secondary winding as they are both very important parts of each coil pack.
So, take the coil & plug out, put the spark plug back in the coil, take a multimeter & hook the positive to the spark plug and the negative to a ground and watch for a spark?
If you speed up the video to 1.5x it’s actually not that bad of a video.

yeah right ha ha
What did you understand from second test?
Resistance test is not enough..
..you have to proceed also to peak voltage test..
next time test a coil on the test bench so we can see what you are talking about and adjust angle of meter so we can see it as you talk
I give 100 out 100 for making a video and 0 out 100 for explaining in a video

Love the language in the first review. Surely, Sister Marie wouldn't approve. lol
The information presented is ok , but that southern accent is sounded much better 😊
1. Wear gloves
2. Unhook negative terminal
3. Creates spark, low voltage high
Teach better than my instructor. Learning more off UA-cam than being in class
if this guy is better than your school teacher, go to a new school... cuz this guy is not great
good video Nate
it may fire with no load.may not under load . so a static test does not always work
Those gloves don't offer protection from a charged coil.
I was thinking the same thing...
just make sure that u use a 1mm ground wire to test for 50 000 volts on the plug
It's enough. The current is miniscule and very short. How thick, do you think, is the secondary winding of a coil?
Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts its great to see kind and generous people.
But my trailblazer’s ignition coils have three terminals and it doesn’t read like how you described
You have ground power & 5v signal I believe since it’s a 3 pin setup
Did anything ever happen?
how would you check for spark, turn the key or send power to the coil a different way?
Coils don't create spark, spark plug does.
You got that backwards
Yes turn the key and let the engine turn over repeatedly. But make sure the fuel injectors are disabled. Check your owners manual in the fuses section and remove the fuses for injectors and fuel pump.
8:48 You're going to get somebody shocked😂
What the heck? Can you give a short complete explanation of what you're testing?
Took this guy 7 minutes to hook up two leads and measure resistance. It’s 2024 and I’m pretty sure he hasn’t finished yet.

You should have shown how you hooded it up
What if your coils have four connecting pins?
I've got a 2001 Ford escape 2.0. can't get fire. Changed the coil pack and crank shaft sensor. Still no fire. Help me !!?
Check for broken wires loose connections & verify the new parts are in fact good…since nowadays new doesn’t mean good anymore
It’s his first time with a multi meter hahahah
Why did my car shut off when one of my ignition coils plug in wires accidentally touched and start smoking
You didn't say what setting on Ohms you where on with your multimeter
I wonder how the hard way look like if thats the easy no tools required way 😳🤫
Why not connet the spark plug aligator clip to battery ground?
Or the alternator grounds right freaking there lol
Grounds are everywhere
Tech decides!
So 1.8 means its good? do you turn on the ignition? what does it read if bad?? Good video but unclear about what is good and what is not
This is only for two pin coils. Testing most three and/or four pin connections like this will not work because of the transistor in the coil. If you were to use this method on most three and four pin coils it will make it look like the coil is bad when it's not.
You just saved me a headache thanks man
Is the same for a mercedes m104 coils.
Thanks buddy, keep on
Did not need the disassembly portion and talk talk talk portion for a generic basic coil test
Why not ground the spark plug to the battery when testing the coil? I thought all ground led back to the battery.
And how is it led back to the battery? Through the chassi, so why not use the chassi like everything els 😅
because if there's a hydrogen gas leak from the battery, the spark could cause an explosion. Same reason why when jumping a car to start you set the ground up on the block or such, not the battery.

If it won't throw a spark if the spark plug is not grounded, let me see you hold it with your bare fingers and crank it.
Can you test a coil on a shop bench by alligator clipping the coil terminals to a 110v-12V converter or 12V battery, and clip the spark plug strap to another alligator clip going to the ground in the wall socket?
Agree
Hell yeah
You talk to much keep yourself on details instead focus on the issue explain what is necessary no one will subscribe to you if you keep on doing that
Lab scope and done ..
Great video. I love it
many talks make it short but safe
Stick a screw driver in the plug wire and lay it close to a ground ⚡⚡⚡lol
