i what i think is ironic is that on the unreleased album right under the song “your power” is the song called “NDA” which stands for Non disclosure agreement which has to deal with legally, and right under that song on the album the song “therefore i am” is there and in that song she is basically throwing shade at someone specifically with the lyric “i’m not your friend” then under that song is “happier then ever” and with the snippet we had gotten on instagram had the lyric “when i’m away from you im happier then ever” which is obviously talking about the predator then more at the top of the album there is this song called “halleys comet” which i think is talking about a friend because in the song “your power” s lyrics billie is talking about someone in third person and then later in the song talks about herself being a victim which has me thinking that “halley” and billie were victims of assault or grooming…..

i believe this song is about her ex boyfriend, brandon, who was 22 or 23 while dating a 16 year old, who was billie, he used her and didn't care about her feelings, in her documentary "the world's a little blurry" we get to see how broken and sad she was because of him and her depression. i love this song!

She directed the video
just a little context: the song is about her ex Brandon, whom she was with when she was 16 and he was 22, hence the 22 seconds of darkness at the end of the video. She’s talked about how she was mentally abused in the relationship and how she was taken advantage of during her documentary.
Here’s what I think about the imagery in this music video. So it zooms in to her at the beginning to capture the focus so that we somewhat have an idea that she’s speaking about herself and her past experiences. “Try not to abuse your power” is most definitely a direct nod to a predator in a relationship where there’s an imbalance of power because of age difference, hence “you said she thought she was your age”. The snake represents the actual predator now and it’s wrapping itself around her neck and body, evoking a feeling of entrapment. This predator that she is in a relationship with is actually killing her and suffocating her as she sits there and takes it because that’s all she feels she can do. You see that when the snake first wraps itself around her, she moves and wriggles a bit, indicating that she is struggling to get loose from the snakes grip but the more she struggles, the tighter this predators grip becomes on her until she just stops moving to show that she surrendered. Then her being in the mountains by herself with only the snake is a nod at how isolated she’s become because of the mental and emotional manipulation that the predator has used to keep her away from those she loves and those that love her. She is alone, isolated and distanced from the world, and it has been reduced to just her and the snake. Also the use of the snake shows that the person was a predator and deceitful as well as manipulative, snakes have bad connotations to them anyways coz nobody should trust a snake. As it zooms out, it’s just showing the mountains and she blends in with them, indicating that she has become one with this isolation, this feeling of aloneness as well as loneliness. It’s all she’s known and it’s all she’s become because of the person she’s with. Then there’s 22 seconds of silence after the song ends which to me is a direct hit to the guy she was in an abusive relationship with as he was 22 when she was 16, almost like directly saying to him “You might not want to lose your power” and “try not to abuse your power”. All in all, the song and video are a masterpiece and Miss O’Connell is tooooo talented.
Not everyone who cries are sad and not everyone who smiles are happy. And on the album cover she had tears in her right eye and that basically means tears of happiness.

My thoughts were that she was talking ab her ex and Billie is only 19 so maybe the “she’s gotta get to class” part maybe she’s in college and billy got cheated on and Billie also was getting gaslighted and the snake and how it’s like constricting her or whatever represents how she felt enclosed or how she felt she was getting suffocated by him and his lies...
I think blending in to the scenery means in this song the 'preditor' is acting in plain sight but it goes by unseen (by people close to her). And the zoom in-zoom out is part of that. Also the snake is strangeling her, but not biting, which represents a life event. You're trapped for an amount of time, however the final 'bite' is not forthcoming, meaning she can't get away. It's so relatable to many and women in particular. I love how she makes songs to talk about these issues.
For her, many people are saying its about her ex boyfriend who was 22 at the time she was 15/16, but it could also be referred to music industry in general, although this feels like a personal touch. The 22 empty seconds at the end could also refer to her ex (i'm not sure of course).

The age gap between the two connects to the underage line and you could tell in the documentary she put out, their relationship was toxic. the power relates to the hold you over people once they let you in but also, the power the industry has over her. in the docu, she has a moment where you can see she's frustrated with her label for rushing her and feeling the need to make it perfect. the snake is symbolic because it's suffocating her. i like that there's multiple meanings to the song

I did that dad joke thing when I watched the video for the first time and said, like you, “this guitar strumming intro is very folksy, bossa nova-y, country... country! The 'contract' wasn't about the snake :) It's a music contract. Her boyfriend in 'The Worlds A Little Blurry' was 23, she was 16. She was the underage girl in this song. He treated her like shit. And the only thing that would hurt him was losing his contract not hurting her (as he did).
I'll lay odds on that snake is completely real, just as the tarantula was in 'You Should See Me In A Crown'.
