Home sweet home..coney/ Gravesend projects. - the fish markets was on 28th mermaid . I'm In tears hearing this history This is unbelievable history. Mermaid Ave Surf Neptune
I grew up in CI in the 80s and as a kid I took the abandoned buildings and open lots for granted, just places to explore. It wasn't until I moved away that I started to question and appreciate what was there before. I'm so happy that you're capturing the history of neighborhood - in books, video and sound - and not just the amusement area. This is priceless. O'Dywer Gardens, Bldg 1, Apt 3D :)
I grew up in CI, we lived in the project's. Off of Mermaid and Neptune Ave, bldg 2, I think so? It's been awhile since the early 70s and late 60s. It's like yesterday was right around the corner, waiting for us. I do miss CI so much, it's like something is in my soul that long for yesterday. We didn't have an easy life but we did have a strange type of love for our city and people 😢. Maybe you can tell me if that was bldg 2 on 121 first st. I forget things these days, must be getting old?
I thought I'd never be able to see my apartment house and my father's Laundromat again, except in my imagination. But there it was, on Mermaid, between 22nd and 23rd Street...and to see the Yeshiva Sharei Tzedek...Frank's Barber Shop...Minnie's Dress Shop, where my mom shopped...the Lakewood Dairy...Wilensky's Hardware...the Mermaid Grill (heck, my sister dated Burt Rand!)
Thank You Charlie......that was the best I've seen as it covered the years I lived across from the Mermaid Theater, above Kaufmann's pharmacy, with Happy's on 29th and the Hubba on 28th. Your work is greatly appreciated for us old time Coney Island natives. Your pal from the Apt. 13D in building 2 of the Surf Projects. Hope you and yours are well.
@@AndyFuhrman Hey Andy, I'm pretty sure Jeffrey Epstein lived in your building...My aunt's 21 yo friend (a cute blonde girl) either jumped or was pushed off that roof in September 1977...Do you recall these stories?
OMG what memories of my childhood! Does any one remember Mary's Luncheoette on 25th St all the cops hung out there? Wow so glad I found this site. thank you
What a fabulous video...and reawakens so many Mermaid Avenue memories..including my dad's barber shop, Dave's Barber Shop, at 2516 Mermaid diagonally opposite Gittler's Delicatessan. And then there was Leon's Barber Shop and Beauty Salon bet. W. 33 & W. 35th (Leon and Edith Zybleman); Al Sinrod's Mens Store; Lou Powsner's Mens Store; and so many more.
Do you remember the last 2 bldg on the right hand side of Mermaid ave(the odd numbers), just before you get to Seagate if you take a right turn. Because at the end of Mermaid, not where the train station and amusement park, but the opposite side, where you have to turn left or right. My family lived in both apartment bldg, they were the last 2 apartment bldg on Mermaid ave. I went to PS 188 elementary school from 1 grade to 6 grade. How I wish I could go back in time and see the old hood.
Wow! This was mind blowing! Sam Horowitz was my mothers cousin...we could do everything in Astroland for free! And we weren’t allowed to go to the movie theater as it was a lotta sexploiation films (which I now collect, study, write about etc...)...this made my birthday week!!
My husband's family lived at 2518 Mermaid Avenue in the sixties. Lot's of stores....it was nice there. I happened to be there when we had the major blackout of 65 (?).
I grew up in coney, my grandparents lived at 1916 Mermaid ave and we lived above Beckys butcher shop at 2125 Mermaid ave ,, does anyone have pictures of Beckys shop or of Kellys fruit store on 19th street between Mermaid and Surf ave.. I miss the old days ...was best in the 60s.
My grandmother use to shop there at A&P, she used to take me with her and i would push the cart back home. I was only about 5 or 6 years old, what a beautiful time in my life.
in the late 1950s a red "fire Truck" would give kids rides for 5 cents. I got on at Surf Projects and off we went to mermaid ave. yeah, I remember that junk wagon, that candy store...... nice short film.
At first the Mermaid Avenue area portion of Coney Island was mostly Eastern European Jewish just like all of Coney Island, but during the 1970s it became mostly populated by African Americans just being close to 60% with some Hispanics being around 30% or more though some of the Eastern European Jewish did remain behind about 25% - 30%. However, in the last 20 years, it has become more or less evenly racially and culturally diverse. The African American population has declined to only being a third of the area's population no longer a majority. Now there is a growing Chinese population spilling over from Bensonhurst with many of them buying up houses including moving into the NYCHA complexes and they are now like at least around 10% of the area's population whereas before they were almost none existent 15-20 years ago. Though eastern Coney Island is still very Eastern European Jewish.

What happy memories. I lived in the big house behind Major's in the 50's.
I want to say thank you for memories 🙏 ❤
I absolutely love residential Coney Island history. Thank you so much for this.
In the late 1990s most neighborhoods had a few old holdouts. Inner Jamaica Avenue is a good place to find a few in 2024.
I used to hangout in Coney Island in the middle to late 80. We knew everyone there. We didn’t pay for anything. I miss, those days. It isn’t the same.

Absolutely amazing video. I’m a resident of Coney Island and had no idea this all existed at one point. Thanks.

I forgot about the Huba Huba luncheonette...Anyone have photos of that small A&P on Mermaid?
My grandmother use to shop there at A&P, she used to take me with her and i would push the cart back home. I was only about 5 or 6 years old, what a beautiful time in my life.
Born and raised on 27th st, threw my grandmothers ashes off the pier

Would love if anyone has any info on Max Lissaks bakery, allegedly at 3010 Mermaid Ave
