The latest Kia Rio is a smartly, if conservatively-styled supermini that rivals cars like the Ford Fiesta and Skoda Fabia. There’s a range of petrol engines and a pair of economical diesels. With a big boot, the Kia Rio is practical and spacious, and owning one should be painless thanks to Kia’s seven-year warranty. Despite all this, it doesn’t excite like the best cars in this class - which offer agile handling - although it is comfortable on the move. In isolation, it’s a good car, but it suffers from the talents of rivals.

It is a very negative and biased review for what is actually a great little car. I own one and absolutely love it, admittedly I think the styling is playing it a bit safe, but get one in the right trim level and colour and it looks very smart. The level of equipment you get as standard is amazing and it feels very well built.

Preoccupied prejudice based upon name brands!
I am really hesitant about gettin a kia Rio 2018-19, although I thought it is the most appealing one (in looks & price) compared to it's competitors. Maybe from what I hear around, about brand names & as the comments section clearly states, preoccupied prejudice based upon name brands.
What do you expect from this channel. They are very biased towards Ford and VW

I agree, the comparison should be with the Ceed and the Golf, but i'll take it as a credit to Rio if they skip the polo and go right for the golf.

Kia have updated this model since the video and the new one has even more features for less! Definitely the best car on the market for the price and size.

The kia is cheaper then the corsa and the fiesta and is in a different size class to the Golf. How come the price wasn't mentioned in this review as it is a lot cheaper then the other cars mentioned and the spec levels are a lot better.I have a 2012 Rio 2 1.4 and I love it. Lot's of room inside, well thought out with Bluetooth phone connectivity and electric everything. Smooth ride and good on all roads. How you can believe fuel figures after VWs little hickup, I don't know. The Kia range is great, both me and my wife have Kia's (Rio and a Venga) and we have been very happy with them and would buy one again. Stop the badge snob brigade!
“No transmission tunnel” I agree, I hate when you buy a Kia Rio and the prop shaft for the RWD system eats into the cabin space.

Never get why everbody keeps raving about the Ford Fiesta, it is cramped and rather expensive for its size. I think the Rio makes up for a better choice for what most wants from a car lik this.

Why should it match VW Golf in terms of build quality?
Ginny always gets her car classes and competitors mixed up. This competes with the Polo not the Golf, obviously.

Marko Jajčinović I have bought a new VW every 2/3 years since 1975 (lot's). Current one is a TDi Golf Match Edition. Last two days, I have been looking at alternatives (because of an argument with VW). ALL the cars I looked at have come on in leaps and bounds - several we looked at have better quality interiors and much more equipment for your money. Looked at Peugeot, Honda, Suzuki, Kia (the Rio shown here), Hyundai today.
The Rio is a Polo sized car NOT a Golf equivalent. It's quality is not that of our Golf, but close and certainly as good as our last South African built Polo.
Most impressive car today and WAY better quality (in terms of finish) and equipment, than our Golf, was the new Peugeot 3008.
Peugeot 3008's interior seems phenomenal to me as well (haven't try it yet unfortunatelly).
Rio vs Fiesta vs Polo
Polo
great performance. poor long term maintenance (so it's a buy to sell car unless you're in love with it). decent fuel consumption. most features in the kit are optional and pricey.
Fiesta
best of the 3 in performance. Good fuel consumption. kit is alright but only 2 airbags with no options for increase. so it's a car you buy for as a solo driver. boot space is non existent (use the back seat. You're a solo driver anyway). overall good as a raw car but awful on practicality and kit.
Rio
performance is mid tier between the three which makes it forgettable to be honest. it's faster than the Fiesta, but slower than the Polo on average. fuel consumption is similar to the others (like. 2 higher)
all kias are buy to keep cars. insane reliability, outrageous warranties and great service and maintenance plans. great utility on bootspace and all the other compartments. it shines above the other 2 on tech really. it's got the latest kind of everything for small cars and they're easy to manage from one location. certainly a super mini family car. solo drivers will appreciate the the other two more just because of the "fun factor" though.

just passed driving test. I'm trying to decide between 2015 fiesta 1.25 and kia rio 1.25 currently driving 2009 i20 1.4 rio definitely more space for 2 small children in back but which is more fun practical reliable safe & economical

I THINK this is a bad review, all she was doing negative comparisons instead of where the car shines, and i quite like the design of the car its different from the fiesta seen everywhere.
The KIA Rio is a very pretty car for its class. I'm liking KIA more by the day.

i just cant believe when ginni was firstly joined the carbuyer replacing rebecca, everyone mocked her bcoz she was not as prettybas rebecca, then i said whats wrong with that i though she had good review. and now a year passed, everyone loves ginni. so happy to see it..
I bought 2016 honda civic EX-T and no negative issues, we are a family of four and ample room, entertainment features, safety, power, reliable, gas mileage are all awesome.
Everybody on this channel love their bottle of water.
I wish they did a GT model just like with the Ceed.
I like the Rio, had one once wile my car was in for a service, it just needed an extra 50hp or so.
Trying to be unbiased with her review. Trying not to mention Ford or VW...oops sorry she just did. This is a very good car. Too good for Carbuyer to be reviewing as they dont seem to appreciate anything other than those ubiquitous brands I just mentioned.
Not a single mention of the 208 or Mazda2, or even more glaring, this car's stablemate, the i20. The Rio has some nice touches, and I wouldn't mark it down even if it hadn't stored the luminous green drinks bottle, but there's a lot of elephant hide plastic in there... no plastic test? There's also a First Edition model at the top of the range - the sort that looks the part without having any hot-hatch pretensions - but I'd go for the 3, personally.
In the old Rio I found the forward visibility to be terrible with massive blind spots around the A-pillars and a very high dashboard. Is the new Rio any better in this respect?
Why won't they develop a 1.4 turbo petrol. Seems like a sweat spot for many cars.
Small door bins in.the back .. disgusting.. in the back of a vw golf the bins are much bigger plenty of room for the mechanics to put their spanners when they're fixing it !!
I have a 2003 Kia Rio and it has been a great car for me since the day I brought it (in 2003). I do not need a cute car, I need a car that will get me through my work week and everything in between. Her review was pretty sad.
ISOFIX is mandatory by law since 2011, you're not talking about ABS or driver's airbag anymore so why waste time on the mandatory anchoring system? Will someone please update the script template for these reviews

She must be thrashing the 1.0. If that's more efficient than the 1.25, which I have in my 2014 rio and get 50 mpg from then somethings very off if it's returning 38 mpg.

My 1.3 Micra is 23 years old and has very similar mpg and performance to your test car.

Micra (1.3 Super S) is easily as comfortable and refined as some modern cars. It doesn't have a touch screen infotainment system but it has a nice smooth drive-train, good seats, good sound deadening, some soft plastics, electric windows and air conditioning etc. The (base spec) K13 I rented last year felt worse by a fair margin in fact.
I appreciate it isn't going to perform in a large impact like a modern car. Other than that there's not a massive difference from a practical standpoint. I certainly don't intend to be involved in a collision in any car.

My 1.3 Nissan March(=Micra) of 1998 with 4 speed Auto got only 12.5 km/L(= 29.5 M/G). Very noisy on the freeway.
Tested the micra 100bhp and the Rio 85bhp:
Riding:
Rio was way more fun: Better dynamics, better gearbox, no turbo but surprisingly responsive, steering was light but an ok performer. The Micra with 100hp and turbo, doesn't have any feel, the gearbox relations are strange, the turbo timing feels strange, the steering feel is a void of sensations. The Micra doesn't seem to have those 100bhp, and the Rio 1.2 85bhp seems to have more.
Interior:
Rio has bigger space all around even on the back seats, and ok finishing, but Interior finishing is more luscious on the Micra and thats all.
Reviews about hatchbacks should *always* demo folding down seats and actually showing what you can load. People want practical info, not just waffle.
Do you have an idea why driver seat has not a pocket back of it?

Fun factor: Mazda! It seems like they copied from a few different brands.. Some of the knobs and buttons looks a lot like the ones inside a Mazda. She even mentions (that they seem to have copied from other designs) it during the video. A nice car I would say...

Those are city cars.
Kia makes great cars but the styling is a bit dated on this one, looks like it could have been released from 2005 to 2010. The crossover equivalent was designed much better. It can be hard to tell if the previous model is newer or this one.
somehow I do find old Rio is a bit more sophsticated looking
James Batchelor has come a long way since doing his first video review, and i have to say, he does a better job than Ginny!!
Kevin Prince, I do however miss the on-screen chemistry between the previous presenters, Matt & Rebecca. Those two just seemed to gel so well together and complemented each other really well. For me, some of the magic has been lost with these new presenters. That's not to say they're bad, the car reviews are just as good, there is just that indefinable 'special something' missing that Matt & Rebecca had in spades. Those two together had an amazing x-factor that's impossible to replicate, alas.
I love the color.
And the Renault Zoe is never mentioned alongside the other supermini class cars. Despite it being an awesome car and a lot of fun to drive. EVs shouldn't be ignored and put in their own category any more.
Chris Till yes it should because an EV car is completely different to a petrol or diesel, also EV cars are more expensive than fuel cars, so they dont fit into the same category at all
The huge difference in running costs will quickly erode a significant amount of that initial price difference.

I just thought you should know that Kia's website also lists a top of the range Rio 'First Edition', although that could be just limited edition.
No mention of the quality? Are there any soft touch plastics on the dash or the doors? The Clio is the king of this segment, especially when it comes to design.

Alex Mitchell I'm mainly talking about the way it looks. Almost every supermini is dull compared to it. The Fabia and Polo are dull, the Fiesta looks like a fish, and that "new" Corsa is just plain vulgar.

To me it looks like car manufacturers are making their cars look more and more similar. It'll probably end up with each car in a given class being the exact same underneath, and the differences being interior..when even that.
I'm sure this is a better car than the one before it, that usually is the way things work, but man.. The Rio we're used to looks SO much better than this one. This new socalled sleek look so many cars come out with,. leaves me cold.

Looks like another competent machine from South Korea for getting from A to B. Most owners will have died from boredom before the 7 year warranty runs out though.
The old Kia was WAYYYY BETTER LOOKING.

For the 7 years warranty this is BEST BUY! Cheapest car in class, with ok design and quality build. Tried Fiesta and it suck's. Feel kinda sorry for it.

They are so bias to European cars. Since when did they mention things like pockets for back passengers. They never mentioned it for European cars. They also didn’t even bother to wash it. There is still dust on the back window. And what do they mean it doesn’t stand out? As I said, they are so bias.
Why you never let us know how much output of that engine produced?? You just said 1.0 l turbo petrol, 1.25 l, etc2......but without knowing how big these engines can produced?? Lack of that technical information

These reviews are always all over the place. This review typically starts by banging on about the interior features when it's the dynamics (fun factor) and engine/body build quality that we're interested in, not how many cup holders. If we don't like what we hear at first, we can then move on. This video takes 5.5 minutes before the fun factor is mentioned. If we like what is said at the start, we'll stick around to hear the detail, hopefully in some sort of order of diminishing importance (cup holders last imo).
Comparing apples to oranges to make Kia Rio look and sound bad
Most people who buy small cars don't expect huge amount of spaces at the back for a budget car. Anyway the technologies provided by Kia won't be available in any other brands at such prices. You will probably have to spend another 5-8K to get the same level of safety features in let say Ford Fiesta or Polo

Rodrigo Matias They used the name of the city that they thought was fit to this car. The same applies to Kia Sedona, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Everest, Toyota Tacoma, just to name a few.
