  • Over the past 40 years, the fishing village of Shenzhen has been reborn as a futuristic metropolis bursting with factories. Bloomberg Businessweek's Ashlee Vance travels to the heart of China's tech revolution to witness this new reality firsthand, as part of a three-episode exploration of the city. In part one of Hello World Shenzhen, Vance gets a worker's view of life in a startup and then explores one of the city's famous electronics markets to learn how people survive (and in some cases make fortunes) in such a frenetic, competitive environment.

I only heard about this city a year or so ago. But now I bring it up regularly with people when I speak about how fast China is advancing and how the UK is falling so far behind and literally crumbling apart! That fact that this place was only a small fishing town with a few tens of thousands of people to what it has become today, in such a short period, is just amazing to me! I would move there in an instant given the chance!

While they r developing their business, they also bring up a lot of other business and train up people, thats what we called mutual benefits. People thought we need foreign investment, but what we always need are ideas, inspiration, diversity, a culture of acceptance, determination... these are the soft-powers for a country to grow

i love that Chinese government understands what the priority is: development. It never tried to seek validation from the west. It didn’t try to become so called “democratic” or “liberate” to in exchange of mercy from the west like what India is doing. It just minds its own business. Do I agree with everything the government did? Not really. But I do applaud for their clear priority.

this is how we once we're remember, we tend to forget that we too we're once the center for manufacturing in the world, and we aren't anymore because that's how economies transition and soon enough China won't be either. During the Spring of 1979, I was studying Chinese language. The professor came in one day and announced to the class (a beginning class) that China was soon to be undergoing major economic reforms and that several American companies had approached the Chinese Department for language experts to assist them in setting up business in this new Chinese economic zone. The zone didn't even have a name yet. I mentioned this to several self-proclaimed China experts (lawyers and law professors), and even they didn't believe it possible. They thought it was a joke or that I misunderstood the professor. If they could only see Shenzhen today. Amazing. A great success. That professor had great inside information on an economic miracle about to transform the world.

I studied 6 years ago in HK and used to visit Shenzhen. It is used to be the city of cheap tech but bad quality. 4 years ago I had a job in retailing industry and we used to import a lot of Cell phones from Shenzhen, tons of goods coming down to HK from Tech city and a lot of potential clients. Now I'm happy to see that this city is alredy a power hub for Tech Industry not just in Asia also in the entire world. I had the honor of watching how this city evolved so much from outside China in just a few years .

The future is already here. And its in china. What is the future for USA, is the present in China.. They are already building test tracks for 1000km/h high speed rail which will start building in 2021-22 if successful. They already have network of like 40,000km high speed rail of trains which go 350km/h. Shenzhen is all electric buses right now. Electric cars are being rolled out lightning speed. Shanghai is already giving out licensing for self driving taxis. RIGHT NOW. many other cities are following in next few months. Even self flying taxis are being built now and being finalised for testing.
China is zooming ahead under their intelligent stable government. You can call Chinese brainwashed, but their government will eradicate poverty by 2021. Freedom means inequality and poverty, where people die or get into suicidal levels of debt because they can't afford basic treatment. China has the right mix of socialism/capitalism where capital is subservient to the government and people. The government actually provides results for the people In China, it's why they have highest approval rating of any government in the world. When you look at the exponential rise in quality of life in the last 40 years, it's not hard to see why.
