If there’s contractual additions baked in once you win a title, that’s another story but until it’s confirmed publicly, we atleast know he completed his original fight count. Your analogy works only if you tweaked it : which ironically, is accurate today. It’s like selling a $14k car in an environment with a chip shortage, much like today. Wheee dealerships are selling 40% above MSRP, much like today. It’s trickled into used cars as well. If you use the blue book value, much like I did today, on my car and get offered that value only to have the dealership turn around and weaponize the chip shortage to their benefit via my commodity I just agreed to without my knowledge of their ability to up charge, I’d be more likely to negotiate this next time I sell a car. Francis understands his value and his rising tide. He is one of those 3 earners who can say I want to make sure I get my slice. It isn’t personal . Never was. I admit, I did have a dalers license, but i still bought from private. Why??? The Dealer is ALWAYS gonna mark the price up by like 30%, even dealer to dealer they don't hook you up. Out of my 58 cars I have had ONE SINGLE LEMON!! One! Now....maybe up north with all the snow, that is a different issue, but down south, never ever ever buy from a dealer if you can find what you want private party.
Sitting in the bathroom about to get dressed and ready for work. Listen to a 20 minute rant by the Lord of Lords? Couldn't think of a better way to start my day.
If the dealer bought it for $1 and sold it to you for $15k, then you’re no more ripped off than if the dealer paid $100k but sold to you for $15k. If it cost them $1500 to clean up & fix the trade in for resale at a competitive price to similar vehicles in the market, then everyone got a fair deal by definition. It just doesn’t feel that way for the person who only sees their one piece of that story and isn’t financially responsible for any of the rest. Coming from someone who has sold cars, been a dealership car buyer, and has worked for credit unions analyzing loan applications for fair purchase prices for the consumer. Great content as always Uncle Chael 👍
Thank you Uncle Chael. What a great analogy. Coming back to the car. If you think you could sell for more than the deal can, you should have tried to sell it yourself. MMA is the perfect model of life. In the hair cutting business, Hair Cuttery or something like that. You can get a guarantee per hour or a percentage of the revenue (which may be high or low or nothing). The choice is yours. If you get a guarantee, don't complain if it is low. If you get a percentage, don't complain if the business is slow. You cannot have it both ways.

There are a few flaws in your argument. First of all, most of those 500 other fighters are expendable and can be signed to what are essentially form contracts with little negotiation, so Dana's not spending time in the booth with any of them. That leaves you with maybe 30ish fighters who have enough leverage to merit more extensive negotiations. Second, when you're a star, it's only rational to use that as leverage to make a better deal for yourself. Connor negotiated profit sharing into his contract, as he should have. If you feel you can maximize value for yourself by doing one-fight deals then you should try to negotiate for it. You're still carrying your own downside risk because your value may fall after any given fight. The situation you seem to be describing is one where you sign a 7 fight deal and want to renegotiate it after fight 3. In that case, I can see your point. But that isn't applicable here because Ngannou's contract is up.
The problem is that Ngannou signed a contract for a set number of fights, which he fought, and then Dana says "Okay great, but since you won the championship, the contract says you have to keep fighting indefinitely for the same purse until you lose". Now, Francis makes a decent amount of money per fight since he's the champion. He gets $600K to show, $600K to win, plus his participation cut. That's a lot of money. But here's the thing -- if Conor McGregor, a guy who has zero title defenses, and currently holds no title, and is ranked 14th in his division (and even that is REALLY generous) fights on the same card, he'll earn more than Ngannou. If Nate Diaz comes back to the UFC, despite never having been a champion, despite not being ranked in any division, he will earn more than Ngannou. Paddy Pimblett, who has all of three fights in the UFC, makes more per fight than Ngannou if you take out the participation cut. And until Ngannou loses the heavyweight championship, that can't change, because his contract says it can't. I don't blame him for wanting to renegotiate his contract, because it's a shitty contract once he becomes champion and keeps winning, but that's why Dana is a billionaire and no fighter in the UFC comes close. Also, no one's saying the UFC can't make money. But most professional sports leagues (eg - NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, MLS) split the revenues close to 50/50 with the athletes. The UFC splits revenues 15/85 in favour of the UFC. That sounds like exploitation to me.
exploitation is a strong word usually reserved for the poor with no other options like sweat shop workers, coal miners, farmers, etc. Ngannou makes over a million dollars every fight, and has endless options how he wants to live his life if he decides to quit the job and walk away. Yet, he chooses to stay. He makes more in 1 days of work than workers at the sand mine he used to work at could make in like 100 years. In comparison, does UFC sound like exploitation to you?
@@bigbill327 For every newcomer, they are trapped into a 10k contract. If it’s not them, someone else will take it. And the UFC knows this and uses it to their advantage. This is textbook exploitation.
@@alohatigers1199 the concept of "if it's not them, someone else will take it" is literally just a description of a free market, and not necessarily exploitation. if you consider that exploitation, literally every entry level job is exploitation. what do you feel is a fair price to pay newcomers with no fans per fight?
Connor will get paid more because any card he fights on it'll be him that exclusively brings in the most business and at least a million buys if not more. Francis as the most scary HW champ in UFC history fighting the most skilled HW contender in UFC history in basically the best matchup in the HW division in UFC history, didn't cross 500k buys. They may not have crossed 400k buys. That makes it a net loss for ESPN who pay for 500k buys every week and depend on sure shots like the HW champ to deliver, Imagine Dana trying to explain to Endeavor executives how the need to pay Francis more, but they couldn't full fill their obligations to ESPN because he couldn't sell more than 400k. He has held up the division for 2 years and taken opportunities from other guys.
Chael is right. The fighter has to renegotiate AT the negotiations. Don't sign a 6+ fight deal if you're not willing to fulfill the contract. From the fighter's perspective, the only reason they sign a long fight contract is to GUARANTEE themselves employment/money. They don't have the confidence to sign a 2 fight deal and then if they win big they have the leverage, cause the reverse is also true. Basically they want the UFC to hedge themselves against the risk, and demand the ability to renegotiate to get all the reward. People say Dana is a "greedy" business man, yet most employees/workers are more greedy than an entrepreneur could ever be
Nice chat, but ripping off athlete's consistently with under pay and contracts where UFC has all the leverage is not like trading in a $17k car for $14k - it is like trading a $50k car for $14k - and having a clause that with your next 5 cars you still have to come back and do the same deal. And, if after 5 cars you get lucky and own a classic special car (i.e. are a champion) you still can't go to other dealers.
Don't sign the contract then. And they aren't getting ripped off, UFC pays these nobodies more than anyone else. Select ex-UFC guys get overpaid by other promotions (i.e. they are paid more than they draw), but those are an exception, and the other promotions are taking a loss to try and get the rub from an ex-UFC athlete. You don't know what you're talking about.
@@PhunkMaster-VivatChristusRex I know plenty - they pay about as much as sometimes less then their competition (who are tiny compared to them) - you seem to have no problem supporting big monopoly power. With Francis in particular - Dana stopped promoting him as he wouldn't extend his contract and actively started rooting against him. And all this talk about losing money - baloney - UFC payout to athletes is tiny compared to any major sport....and all those owners made the same arguments as Chael before players unionized. Basically, as it stands now, UFC is not taking big risks at all - their profits are practically guaranteed since they pay athletes so little.

Have we ever seen Chael in that first pose with his left leg on the couch/sofa like that, before? I think not, gentlemen!
That was refreshingly cathartic.
I would listen to chael talking about 20 minutes forever
Nice hope you bought some knee pads too
" You only buy from a Dealer " is the WILDERST SHIT YOU EVER SAID!! LoL I have personaly, i swear on my grandas grave, owned 58 cars in my life, all of them I bought private or from a dealer auction.
When he started talking car rentals, I got a little lost, but then when he made the connection to UFC... I was like damn
Sitting in the bathroom about to get dressed and ready for work. Listen to a 20 minute rant by the Lord of Lords? Couldn't think of a better way to start my day.
Absolutely taught me something about this business and many other things. Well done Uncle Chael.
Top Tier Chael video here.
I feel bad for all those that skipped this one. They don't know what they are missing.
Well said Chael, let's see if Nganou understands the metaphor..
🤣, still well said?
Francis about to get paid for a second fight in a row. 💰💰
Another masterpiece from Chael
I am playing parts of this rant to my kids as an intro to business.
One of the best Chael videos out there
This should be a training video for all the fighters who make it to top 10.
Damn the ending was brutal
Perfect analysis and explanation for us plebs. Thanks Lord Chael
Uncle chael is giving out fire vids all day tonight I’m ready for it
I listen to chaels videos on the drive to and from work, 20muns suits me!
On ariel's show ngannou said it wasn't about money. He said ufc offered him a lot of money. At that point it's just going to be tough.
I have never Liked a video before watching it, until now.
Thank you uncle Chael
Mr. Uncle Chael, please provide more 20 minute rants. Thank you, have a great day.
Finally
An interesting look into the psychology of a promoter.
Great stuff.
Very few people are qualified to talk for 20 minutes on that
A look at any business owner, the psychology is the same. People don't start a business to lose their money, they want to make money.
This should be required viewing for ANYONE in sports and music.
The reason why most people don't understand why a business should make a profit are related to why most business startups fail
It should be mentioned that Francis did in fact, finished his contract...
On point Chael! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
i love chael for always coming with the lessons
When was the last time we had a truly active heavyweight champ in the UFC?
I'm going to have to listen to this twice for sure. Very deep and well concepted analogies that really help explain. Chael really has a bright head on his shoulders.
"I might've just described you" 😮
Lol
I relearned so much about business from this. Thank you this was great
Can someone explain to me the altercation between Francis & Chael?
The answer is yes chael, YES
The psychology of the fight business, by Chael Sonnen. Brought to you every day. This was an excellent video!!!!!! Why some people cant understand these things... dont know. But maybe they learned something from Uncle Chael today!!!!!!!!!
Guy, Lords what do ya wanna do ?? what do ya think Lords .. LOVE Chael fun listen everytime dude !!!
If uncle chael will say to listen this on loop for the whole day then I will
He talks like I do when I'm in the middle of pushing out a monster dump.
Wow! Halarious! That was the most underrated comment ever! It with out a doubt made the top 5 on my comment list!
Why yes I do want to hear a 20 minute rant about Francis Ngannou uncle Chael
That was really eye opening. Dana should probably show this to all fighters before all (re)negotiations!
Always a big pleasure . Best mma talk ever.. we dont need other clickbait wanna bes podcaster and mma talkshows with people that hav Zero fighting or at least competition experience. Ma man big uncle chael like always u did a good job .
It is weird how Chael knows that established title is a scam but he kept advertising them because they pay him.
How is it a scam?
@@newphone4089If you research it research and youll see how it's a scam. its a souvenire gimmick, not legal in the slightest, you dont even actualy own the land, and the company that sell you the package are actually a chinese company. not even scotish. Seems a lot in the US are falling for this, just a shame to see sombody like Cheal who I admire, continue to push this rubbish for money.
@@newphone4089 it’s al illegal scam. It’s false marketing. None of their claims are even true. You don’t become a lord because you own a 1x1 square foot of land in Scotland. That’s the most retarded idea I’ve ever heard in my life and I’ve seen some dumb shit. Only Americans would fall for this blatantly false bullshit
Please have Ngannou as a guest on the channel, Chael! 🙏
I'm beginning to realize your Navigator story was a metaphor and I was caught up in my work mentality in offering advice. LOL Sorry I missed the point in the other video, Chael.
If anyone else was ranting I’d say no but since it’s Chael, yeah man I’m here for it.
@@bigbill327
For every newcomer, they are trapped into a 10k contract.
I always have 20 minutes for uncle Chael.
Established Titles must really be paying Chael nicely 😂
Chael is right. The fighter has to renegotiate AT the negotiations. Don't sign a 6+ fight deal if you're not willing to fulfill the contract. From the fighter's perspective, the only reason they sign a long fight contract is to GUARANTEE themselves employment/money. They don't have the confidence to sign a 2 fight deal and then if they win big they have the leverage, cause the reverse is also true. Basically they want the UFC to hedge themselves against the risk, and demand the ability to renegotiate to get all the reward. People say Dana is a "greedy" business man, yet most employees/workers are more greedy than an entrepreneur could ever be
This was the best thing Chael has every done, great job champ!
Chael is right on and most people hate the truth.
Chael my man don't shill for any company its the fighters the warriors that deserve far more money than the guys writing the contracts ect.
Yes I do chael , thanks. Undisputed
Perfect to listen to and sleep.. always a great job chael
There are no Lemon Laws for used vehicles in Oregon. Check it out.
Its great how he takes us on the journey of the rant with him. He's all give!
I mean - he didn't sign the contract and is still getting a 20 mins lecture from Chael...all for a comment he made politely. Meanwhile, Dana goes off the deep end with insults all the time.
You are THE great communicator. It means the world that you found a thing that works. Love ya buddy.
