    Really glad you’ve decided to have some PHEVs on this channel. Yes, some people only get them for tax savings, but for true EV enthusiasts, PHEVs are a great option. A lot of us drive less than the EV range of most PHEVs per day and would affectively drive fully electric for many months at a time, only using the petrol for a couple road trips.

      I’ve owned a SR+ and Performance and a id3 max. But I now opted for a Ceed SW Phev 2022. Because of ridiculous low car cost, less than half of Tesla 3 Performance, usable boot space, ev range enough to get to work and charge there, enough ev range to do errands in nearby city, and I’m really afraid to do road trips this summer in Europe because of the number of EVs sold and the lack of charging infrastructure… it’s gonna be hell.

    If you ever come to Texas, I'll let you test my 2019 Chevrolet Volt. I know they weren't sold in Europe or Scandinavia, though. I think you'd be impressed as it's so much more capable than the Kia/Hyundai PHEV setup. Mine charges at 7.2 kw and has about double the EV range of the Kia, and does 0-60 in about 8 seconds, even in pure-EV mode. The engine will never start unless the battery is drained or it is ridiculously cold outside, giving a true EV driving experience.

    In order to test Honda Clarity PHEV Bjorn has to travel in the USA or Canada or Japan since that car is not available in Norway. On the other hand in Europe there is Suzuki Across PHEV which is a rebadged Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV sold in North America. So the question is will Bjorn properly test the latter vehicle? Nice test, and you are right about not knowing the price of EVs in Norway. Over here a petrol Kona is 22k EUR (~230k NOK) and the electric is 40k EUR (~430 NOK), and that's after the 5k government grant. . I checked and the same model is 350k NOK in Norway, so about 33k EUR. Still, that's 10k more than the petrol version, although the Ioniq Electric looks attractive at 287k NOK. PHEVs are a good alternative if you can charge at home everyday. The complexity of the drivetrain might make them much more costly to repair in the long run. The Phev tests are very good, not sure if everyone is aware of the slow charging speeds vs. EVs. Keep up the awesome work!

    Yes, I heard about people in my country (Germany) who never charge the PHEV they use. In Germany you pay a value-based income tax for the private use of company cars and you get a 50% discount on that tax for PHEVs. Most people have a fuel card from their company to pay for fuel, but they would have to pay for electricity themselves, that's why they never charge the car. Even owners of the car and/or company don't charge regularly, because electricity costs more than 3 times the money in Germany and fuel is 10% - 15% cheaper than in Norway. It just doesn't pay off to charge the car.

      My wife is driving a PHEV with fuel card in Belgium. Electricity is reimbursed on a bimonthly basis. It's plugged in daily at home and at work (not often now due to COVID-19). I proposed a BEV (BMW i3). However it has only 2 rear seats and we have 4 kids. In addition, the car leasing cost for i3 was same as 530e. She did not have to think twice.
      Next car will be BEV due to company policy change, banning all ICE and PHEVs from next year. Now only PHEV and BEV are allowed. But with more cars are offer, the next car would probably have been a BEV anyway.

      Are company cars quite common in Germany? Would these be perks only for the top 3 executives of a billion dollar corporation, or would an apprentice auto mechanic get one? In Canada company cars are not very common. Most people use transit to get to the downtown core, even if they own a car the parking is $4,000 a year. No sane person here would choose to pay the $10,000 extra to get a PHEV with a $2,500 subsidy, and then not plug it in.

    • @felixklusener5530
      @felixklusener5530 4 роки тому

      @@RandyTWester In Germany company cars are common. Even with a small business you can register the car as a company car and all the costs for fuel, etc. reduce your income from the business and that lowers the income tax. My dad for example has his own doctors office and his Outlander PHEV is registered on the name and adresse of this doctors office. He doesn't save a cent by charging the car, but he charges it every day. As an employee it costs you even more to charge, because fuel is free for them with the fuel card.

    • @RandyTWester
      @RandyTWester 4 роки тому

      @@felixklusener5530 interesting! In Canada, a business can reimburse $52 per 100 km to an owner / driver, tax deductible to the business and not taxable to the driver. But if the company buys the car, the driver pays more than $100 per personal 100 km as a 'standby charge' yet the business cannot tax deduct the full cost of 'luxury' cars. And BEVs in winter can be used in our winter but take twice the electricity, so PHEVs are more practical.

    Hello Björn, a few remarks from a previous PHEV driver (Golf GTE) that switched to pure EV (M3), for your future tests:
    - never trust fuel consumption estimation of the car. Never ever.
    - look out for car's possibility to combine fossil and electric motors in intelligent ways, like adding electric acceleration while driving fossil. GTE could only do in the sporty GTE mode, not in normal mode. I guess this could help overall efficiency big time.
    - please report on limitations of pure EV driving: kWh peak, max speed, power degradation (which in GTE would kick in quickly in uphill) - I expect big differences here
    - as for fossil consumption, would be interesting to check real-world electricity consumption including charge loss.
    Thanks a lot for the hard work :-)

    Hi Bjorn, Thanks for doing this test. I think you should do more Hybrid car tests and not just only full EV tests. For me personally a Full EV is not a n option. I rent my apartment and have no access to charging at home. But I think i am considering a PHEV for my next car and I am sure there are many like me. The PHEV reviews under the same test conditions would help deciding if the next car is PHEV and the one after is EV. for this huge group of people. Also what would be helpful is how to efficiently plan routes with a PHEV, when to charge so you get the most use out of the motor and not the engine. etc

    What world needs is Tesla Bjorn Winter Commute Range Test for PHEV cars. Start driving from home with full battery and cold motor and log fuel and electricity consumption at every 10 km up to 100 km or something like that.
    There are really big differences with PHEV, winter and heating solutions. Old king Opel Ampera has a PTC heater and works fine with mild winter. KIA's PHEV are really struggling because all heat is coming from the fossil engine. I have heard that 25 km commute in winter means 22 km fossil engine running and 3 km EV drive at the end.
    In summer all PHEV's work ok because WLTP test cycle is done in summer conditions. Winter features vary a lot and “real journalists” seem not be interested about this topic.

    Plug in hybrids make more sense than pure bev at the moment. We can't make enough batteries fast enough to convert every car to bev but we could do it for phevs. The battery in a 90kWh bev could go into 10 of these instead.
    Then we have 10 cars running ev almost all the time.
    People also assume phevs will be poor for efficiency but they aren't because they are carrying an ice but not a massive battery.
    The only real downside is they are usually slower than a bev.

Other bev are smaller. if you charge the outlander at home, you can drive pure electric up to 90% and for long distance trips you don't have to mind about charging. that means, even when you drive pure electric only 70%, you don't have to carry an expansive, heavy 90kWh battery with you. thats a great deal for such a big car with awd and trailer hitch. by the way. you have a 220V AC power supply in the car, you can use with electrical devices up to 1,5kW or for your House, in case of power failure.

    In the UK, a lot of people drive Mercedes and BMW PHEVs and never plug them in. But the reason they even get a PHEV in the first place is because of road tax, or "Vehicle Emissions Duty" as it's now called.
    PHEVs get very low CO2 g/100km and as such end up in lower road tax bands compared to pure fossil cars. Now, these PHEVs of course are allowed to get their funny numbers by showing an "ideal" use case of someone plugging the car in all the time, but you don't get any tax penalties if you don't do that yourself, effectively creating a loophole into cheaper road tax. It's basically like Dieselgate - making the cars get a lower CO2 g/100km on the official tests only to pollute way more on the roads.
    The UK ended grants for PHEVs though. Only BEVs and HFCEVs still have access to the OLE grant money, which... keeps getting reduced by the government.
    Ireland is different though, and the SEAI grant does apply to both BEVs and PHEVs - that said, BEVs get a bigger grant and BEVs also get Vehicle Registration Tax relief, which PHEVs don't get. This means that the Ioniq Electric is a cheaper car to buy in Ireland than the Ioniq Plug-in. While most of the typical BMW/Audi/Mercedes drivers in the UK have moved over to PHEV models, in Ireland, they've moved into Teslas, Hyundai Ioniqs, Konas, and yes, even Nissan Leafs.

    Would be interesting if you can run tests on a HONDA CLAIRTY PHEV. !81 HP electric motor 17KWH battery and has a battery heater for us in Canada wich would work for Norway. I find the hybrid fuel economy is much better than specifications if you start your long range trip in hybrid mode with the fully charged battery. I find the battery slowly drops to 50% then tends to replace that level of charge even if a series of hills drew the charge level down to 40% the more normal road in a short time will allow the system to recharge back to 50%. At 100 km/hr highway consumption is 3.8 to 4.0 l/100 not the 5.9 specified for the car. I am questioning the cars computer results but It really does not use alot of gas. Your testing would would quickly find the true performance. Honda sales service are completly clueless explaining the drive modes of the car. There is an engine direct to drive mode, no electric motor involved which tends to happen on a flat road. I have 43,000 km on my 2019 car and I am trying to get my head around the engineering effort put into this car. Follow all your car reviews and enjoy the scenery.
