I had the same temp probe setup. After awhile it started to read off. I went out and bought a better one and compared the 2. The one you have showed about 50 degrees hotter.
Liked. thanks. If I understand correctly, the only reason why you won't recommend this as the 'only grill' is because you must have electrical power to run it and if power is out, then the grill does not work? Otherwise no reason not to have this as an only grill for a casual griller? Thanks.
In haven’t seen the video in awhile but most likely yes. The diffuser is my only gripe with this grill now. It rusts easily and I have to replace it once a year. There are some after market options I’m looking at now.
@@AudiophileTommy It's designed as a heat diffuser. Made out of carbon steel for that reason. Carbon steel conducts heat 3 times better than stainless steel.
Mike, I’m about to buy a Recteq RT-B380. Found it on Offer Up. Asking $200 and they said they’ve only used it 3 cooks, BUT, it’s been sitting for 1 full year unused, with cover on tho. I just threw -$170 at her and we are going to confirm this tmrw. Should I go for it? How’s the customer service and you think there would still be a warranty?
Question I already have the Recteq BFG and an OG model RT300 tailgater and I kinda want to add a live fire grill to my collection but not sure if I want the B380x or the Smokestone, or the new Chud grill charcoal from Chuds BBQ. If I get another Recteq I have to buy an inverter generator. Or go charcoal and wood and not worry about loss of power. Thoughts please???
I just purchased the bullseye, my 4th grill. First thing I noticed was nothing to catch the grease. How is the clean up with no drip pan? I know you put a drip pan on the low and slow smokes but what about direct grilling? How nasty does the burn barrel get? What is the clean up like and how often to you clean the grease?
Loved your review... I'm concerned about grease drips and whether or not I can expect that it's gonna ruin my patio. Have you had any issues with grease? I don't see any grease catcher, so I'm not sure exactly what to expect. Thanks!
Congrats on the new grill! Check out my Bullseye playlist! Lots of info on grilling and smoking! After watching if you have any requests for any other cooks let me know! I’m always looking for new video ideas! Thanks for watching!
I just returned my 2nd Traeger 575 Pro that suffered runaway temps (set at 200, ran up to 500) along with backfires & explosions. Both smokers had less than 10 smokes. I am interested in the ReqTec Bullseye & am wondering if you have had any instances of over-firing or exploding the lid open? I can deal with a 50 degree temp diff as long as it's steady & repeatable. One last thing. Cleaning & ash. How ofter & how difficult to clean? I have a dedicated vac I used for my previous pellet.
Never any issues with an exploding lid. Cleaning the ash is super simple as the grate and deflector plate comes off quickly. I had issues in the beginning but I love this grill.
Thanks for the awesome video! I’m in a predicament where I am buying my first grill and I am in between the Bullseye or a Weber Kettle. What would you suggest? A pro to the bullseye is I am in Augusta, GA, home of Rec Teq, so I could pop in the store.
I’ve large green egg for long smokes. 45 minutes and lots of hand holding to get a weekday cook going. Looking for something to smoke a chicken, grill hamburgers, corn or reverse sear steak. I budgeted a 590 but saw the 380 has a higher sear point. Do you have an opinion about sear? If you could have either 590 or 380 which would you choose given my use as mostly short smoke or bbq function?
I bought a beta version of the Bullseye a few years ago which basically was the addition of the smart controller. I realized that the louvered vents clogged easily and didn’t allow the grill to breathe properly. I installed an old vent off of a charcoal grill directly on top of the lid. Temp control is much much better. BTW, a Weber kettle lid also fits and works better than the stock lid, just don’t have the hinges.
Hi, are you able to smoke stuff for many hours on the bullseye? Like a brisket for 12+ hours? Or ribs/pork butt for 3 hours+? How many racks of ribs? Would a 4-8 pound brisket fit inside?
So it has been a very long time now so I am curious, how's it doing? My old Sam's Club pellet grill (Even Embers) I have had for 3 years and this last year it's a bit fiddly to work with. I figure its dying out. Thankfully it is very heavy steel so likely will be repurposed as a charcoal grill and attach an offset smoker box on the old pellet hopper side.
It’s starting to give me issues mainly inconsistent temperatures. Other owners are starting to get rust holes making the grill useless. I haven’t had that happen yet.
Thank you for the review. First time watching. I am thinking about getting the RT 1250 but was on the fence of getting the Bullseye or the RT 340. Right now they are the same price. Would love your opinion on this. Thanks in advance.

My buddy just got a Rec Teq 380 today..early christmas present. We are both Weber guys with 22 Kettle and WSM each. Will be curious to get his take on it. it seems a Pellet grill takes the place of a gas grill convenience but with added smoke. I am still on the fence! great vid tho.
@@mikebowerstv Hmm. I guess high temps and electronics don't go well together for long. My KJ classic has lifetime warranty. PK360 has 20 year. But when I look up pellet grills, their max warranty on electronics is 3 years. That says a lot about the product quality. It's a shame.

Thanks for a good video with honest temps. I got rid of a Weber Smoke Fire because it was up to 50° off. They should not lie. They should be able to get within 5-10°. 50° can make a very large difference on a long cook like a brisket or pork butt. We are talking about eating at dinner time vs bed time.
@@mikebowerstv That is absolutely true. Whenever I use my probe thermometer, I always keep one probe monitoring my oven and make my temperature adjustments using that. It is amazing how off ovens are.
Yes but you can adjust the temperature skew in the settings. I just did this and now my cooks are much more predictable and don't require me to run other probes
Thanks for the review! This was helpful! I heard your comment about the bullseye not being the primary but would you recommend this for someone that can only get one and wants to smoke and grill equally? I don’t smoke that much but maybe once every month or two and typically is ribs or pork butt but I would see using it for grilling burgers and steaks. It is just me and my wife and sometimes the kids and grandkids. I have a PitBoss 700 Classic now but want to get something different.
Yeah if you realize there may be a dinner delayed or not happen due to grill malfunctions. I will say since making the the video I haven’t had any issues. Thank you for watching!
I've had the RecTec Bull for a year now. It's amazing, but I've been using my Weber kettle for any searing or higher temp cooking. Just takes too long to heat that big thing up. Always thought the Bullseye would be the perfect companion for it, but I've held off after hearing about some of the problems people are having. This morning I said screw it, I gotta have one.
I have no issues with leaking, But I use a drip pan when smoking fatty meat. Only once did I have a problem with dripping from the lid but it was a very humid/rainy day.
According to Recteq they probe used a calculation for inside grill temp so it isn’t going to be accurate to a secondary probe. You’re able to dial it in by adjusting the offset and feed rate but if you learn the grill on how it is it’s perfect. Like I do my steaks on LO now then turn to riot for searing. I’ve been ok with it! Like you said.
I set the temp offset on mine. I'll say this to anyone who decides to do it on the bullseye. Take your time, let it settle for at least 30 minutes after each adjustment. Check and double check. If you don't do that you can easily make it worse. I work with PID controlled air heaters so I knew what to look for.
Was originally going to get the 590 but now am leaning more towards this. Do you ever get any embers coming out the exhaust vents? Seems like without the drip pan more embers are flying around inside. Would you be worried with this on a wood porch?
Nice review and good channel. I have the RT 700 and love it. I have owned several smokers / custom pits. Quality pellets make a huge difference. I learned I needed some patience when see ring steaks. I agree with your statement about having more than the Bullseye. 👍🏻🇺🇸👍🏻
What good timing. I've been circling the idea of a pellet grill for a long time. The thing is I don't particularly care for the smoking function because I have a dedicated smoker. I want something akin to a gasser thats simple start & good to go for ease. Was looking at this grill the other day & it really fit the bill. Price point wise it also could serve as an inroads into pellet cooking which I've never dabbled in. Thanks for showing it. Also for sharing your issues as well as the solutions. Glad to hear it all worked out. I was about to bite on another pellet grill until I read their support was absolute trash. Hearing Rectec is response & willing to resolve issues is good to hear. Were they responsive through email or by phone? How long was the turn around?
I've had mine for a month now and I've had zero issues so far. I've smoked a pork butt, wings, meatloaf and next weekend ill be smoking a brisket (6 lbs). Reqtec is a solid company that will help you no matter the issue. cheers!
Do you use additional wood chip smoke boxes with the Bullseye grill or do the wood pellets provide enough smoke? Always used gas and looking to get pellet smoker/grill. Thanks
Hey Mike! Great looking hat! I want a pellet grill... but like everything else I get... tons of research needs to happen.. and then ... let go of some cash...LOL..kinda bad at that. Take care.
The first one would only heat up to 100 degrees, the second one needed a new controller and now it’s 50 degrees off? I’ll pass, my offset stick burner is 25 years old and has never had a problem. It even works when the power is out…
Same as you, I have the Thermoworks Smoke monitor. It consistently reads high compared to everything else I have tried. The temp issue you mention may the Thermoworks device. Not much of a fan any more. Love my Thermopen but not the Smoke.
I’ve tested with three different thermometers, it’s the grill that is incorrect. I do need to test it again though as I think the grill has cooled off a bit.
Just to let you know, there are "hacks" where people have used their 18 volt power tool battery to run their grill for an entire cook. Don't ask me the details but I'm sure there are videos on here of people showing how to do it. One guy specifically said he ran his for a 14 hour cook on his 18 volt Makita battery and still had 60% battery left.
@@mikebowerstv with trial and error 500 is the low as you can go to light it. I chose 600 so I could do 2 start ups. I have a solar charger but it takes a good 6 hours of sun to give it an almost full charge. I invested about $400 in it. you could get an inverter gen. but they are about $1200 for a quality one.
I know these are two different grills but would you recommend a bullseye over a black stone? I currently have a 700 Bull. It would be used for searing mostly.
I've had a Bullseye for a while. Yup, it runs hot out of the box. But it's literally 15 seconds to adjust the offset on the console, and you'll be running very close to your desired temp in no time. The consensus is around +15 to +17 on the offset. Couldn't be easier or simpler. Now, all my cooks are coming out on time, and it's incredibly versatile as you've pointed out. I'm batch cooking steak, chicken, brisket, beef ribs, etc multiple times a week and it's been smooth sailing since I made the offset adjustment.
Thank you for all your videos, it really helped me make a decision on this grill. One quick question, how is clean up on the bullseye? Do you have to vacuum out any ash from the pellets? Thanks!
Just got mine recently .I With all the info you have provided here and now your only problem is offset . Please just adjust your offset to +20. It will run 10 degs. off at low temps and 20 degs. off at higher temp .
I’m good with leaving it how it is. I’ve done well assuming it’s running 50 degrees hotter than the set temp. Not a huge deal since I mainly use it for grilling. Thanks for watching.
Bought the Bullseye as a second grill. Added the Aura cast iron grate and a grease drain bucket. I like it, but I agree with you, this should not be your only grill. Seems like grills/smokers, all have their place (specialty), but this is a great grill for the price and does a lot of things very well. Definitely worth a look since a lot of 22" grill parts interchange with it. You get a lot of flexibility.
Where and How did you add a grease drain bucket? Lack of a grease bucket to me is a major design flaw. I've seen people use drip pans and even put a mat under the Bullseye. Using a mat is total B.S..
I put a pan underneath the meat on low and slow cooks to catch the grease. Not a big deal as I’ve done this on my Weber, PK and UDS. As for high heat grilling it’s not necessary in my opinion as I have not had any flare ups in 9 months.
@@wahapete About 2" above and 1.5" left of center of the firebox, (there is an open space there on the bottom). I drilled a 1/4" hole to accept a 1/4" x 3" eye bolt that was opened up to act as a hook. 2 holes about 3/8" wide were placed on each side (of the bolt) parallel to the firebox. The small drip bucket came from the paint dept. at Home Depot for about $3.00. I used a wing nut on top, and a nut/washer on the bottom of the eyebolt to lock it in place. Was height adjusted to hang about 1/2" below the firebox. There is a raised lip around the firebox, stay outside of that lip. Not a perfect solution, but better than nothing. Also bleeds a little air in from the bottom which is not a bad thing.
So not even 3 minutes in and all I hear how bad this grill is and how you have to fix, tweak, compensate or just look the other way. Glad I didn’t buy one of these for my dad because I’d be pissed.
I have to admit.. I stopped watching after you said you were tired of working on it... won't even consider purchasing after you talked about the problems. Why buy a headache? Cheers!
So I was watching your video to see how it compares to a Big Green egg I would have liked more demonstration on the grill and less conversation about how much you like what you have
My friend has this grill and now I'm thinking of getting one. The power going out shouldn't stop you from having this as your only grill. I mean come on, if my power goes out the last thing I'm thinking about is grilling.

Temperature is temperature. If a ThermoWorks Signal says the internal temperature is 325, then it’s 325, even if the Recteq says otherwise.
I’ve never seen any embers make it out. Mine has been on my deck for over a year with no issues.
Nice review and good channel. I have the RT 700 and love it. I have owned several smokers / custom pits. Quality pellets make a huge difference. I learned I needed some patience when see ring steaks. I agree with your statement about having more than the Bullseye. 👍🏻🇺🇸👍🏻
Patience is hard when you’re hungry!! Thanks for watching!
In this situation the Bullseye will be perfect!
@@mikebowerstv Does it fit Weber 22 grates?
Also whats the burn rate(lb/hr) on high temps?
Yes they fit! A little over a lb an hour
@@mikebowerstv Thank you very much for the info. Happy cooking brother!
I've had mine for a month now and I've had zero issues so far. I've smoked a pork butt, wings, meatloaf and next weekend ill be smoking a brisket (6 lbs). Reqtec is a solid company that will help you no matter the issue. cheers!
Yep the newer ones seem to have all the bugs worked out!
Do you use additional wood chip smoke boxes with the Bullseye grill or do the wood pellets provide enough smoke? Always used gas and looking to get pellet smoker/grill. Thanks
You can, but I haven’t seen much difference in flavor.
Still like it?
I do!
Wait... so you had to get the original grill completely replaced and then the controller replaced on the replacement they sent you?
That’s correct, very frustrating! It’s worked perfectly ever since though.
Hey Mike! Great looking hat! I want a pellet grill... but like everything else I get... tons of research needs to happen.. and then ... let go of some cash...LOL..kinda bad at that. Take care.
Yes letting go of cash is hard on me too!!
I wish they made the dome taller, so they could do turkey's and rotisserie setups!
There is an aftermarket hinge that will allow for a rotisserie setup.
Spatchcock it 😀
So fyi, I bought a 600w portable power supply. it ran my RT700 for 12 hours.
That’s awesome!! I didn’t think that would be enough to light it!!
For me personally yes I would prefer the Bullseye over the Blackstone. I actually have a Blackstone, but do not use it in videos.
I may break down and do the adjustment one day.
Why is there rust?
The only thing that rusts is the deflector plate. Not gonna lie it’s cheap but at the same time I haven’t properly maintained it either.
Thank you for all your videos, it really helped me make a decision on this grill. One quick question, how is clean up on the bullseye? Do you have to vacuum out any ash from the pellets? Thanks!
Yes about every ten cooks (sooner if they are long cooks) I’ll vacuum it out and clear the vents. Enjoy your grill.
Love mine! Do a ton of food prep on mine.
Yeah it has turned out to be a great grill!
I've had my Bullseye about 6 months and it's good for hamburgers and hotdogs that's about it. Can't get a sear on a steak unless you want welldone.
The Aura grill grate helps.
I need to buy that grate!!
@@firstjohn3123 Thanks!
I bought one last year it sucks, temp is all over the place
Great information👍
Pk video soon! I promise!!
@@mikebowerstv thanks Mike, I look forward to that😊
So not even 3 minutes in and all I hear how bad this grill is and how you have to fix, tweak, compensate or just look the other way. Glad I didn’t buy one of these for my dad because I’d be pissed.
I have to admit.. I stopped watching after you said you were tired of working on it... won't even consider purchasing after you talked about the problems. Why buy a headache? Cheers!
I encourage you to keep watching. By far my most used grill.
My exact reaction!
So I was watching your video to see how it compares to a Big Green egg I would have liked more demonstration on the grill and less conversation about how much you like what you have
I have plenty of videos demonstrating the grill. Check out my Bullseye Playlist.
I know, get a Large Big Green Egg and be done with it. Chef Jerry
Eggs are nice but this fits my needs a little better! Thanks for watching.
You still can’t beat a Weber…
It’s a great grill as well
Weber don’t work as well in mn when it’s below 20 degrees
I wanted you to cook something on it and I can see what the results are. I don’t want you to just sit there and talk about it.
Haha! I have about 30 videos on my channel cooking on it.
My friend has this grill and now I'm thinking of getting one. The power going out shouldn't stop you from having this as your only grill. I mean come on, if my power goes out the last thing I'm thinking about is grilling.
Lots of electric stoves and ovens out here in Texas. If power goes out you need something.
@@mikebowerstv I'm in Wisconsin. If I need food I'll just go out and shoot a deer and cook it over a fire.....LOL
Just have your portable generator ready. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah that’s running other things in this situation. Plus I will never not have a charcoal or wood burning grill.
Shout Out From South Texas :)
Hello!!
No it s not, also horrible customer service. It’s a Weber at best, at least all the components are. Way over priced by about $500
Quality is for sure hit or miss for people.
@@mikebowerstv Around $1000 total for basically a Weber Grill, is far from hit and miss for those of us who work and and save for a long time and then pay for a Grill from normally would be Kmart.
It is a shitty grill! Mine has never held a constant temperature and finally melted down after the fire traveled from the fire pot to the hopper. Buy something else! Also, our BFG2500 has had issues since we bought it. Terrible quality! The service department will mail all of the parts you need. Most of the time, they’re the wrong parts but hey! They’re answering the phone! Their grills just suck!
That’s frustrating for sure.
Less talky more instruction
This was a review not an instructional video. Please check out one of my many cooking videos on my Bullseye playlist if you are looking for an instructional video. Thanks for watching.
