The gender wage gap is considered to be between 4 and 23 cent (depends on how you compare the wages) , So even in the extreme scenario (the 23 cent gap) 1 cent is a significant step forward. If it's only 4 cent, than 1 cent improvement is massive.
It's not something we should be focusing on because it's not indicative of inequity in treatment between men and women. It's indicative of different career choices made by women.
Not entirely. The studies that yield the smallest wage gap (4 cent) take all those things into account. What remains is the unexplained gap, one that is contributed to sexism.
There is inequity in treatment between men and women in the work floor. It's just not as large as 23 cent, how large it is exactly is difficult to say and out of my zone of expertise.
Does the 4 cent gap take women being less likely to ask for a raise into account?
The whole point of the gender wage gap conversation is to get people to talk about those issues. Why do women ask for raises less? How can we get women asking for raises more? Is giving out raises only when they're asked for even a fair or efficient system?
wiiztec I'm rather certain that the study that yielded a 4 cent difference took into account all these things. But I haven't read the study in question, if you want I could send you a link.

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that the most popular measure of the wage gap just takes into account the average income of all men and women. Women do tend to make less than men for the same work, but 70-80% is a little extreme. Women tend to pursue jobs that simply pay less, regardless of gender. In my personal opinion, income transparency would probably solve the actual wage gap problem. If everyone knew their coworkers' incomes, then it would be much harder to pay some people, especially minorities and women, less. Remember, a company will pay as little as possible for labor, and, if they can short half of their workforce, they will. However, fixing the wage gap alone will not give women the same average income as men. In order to overcome that hurdle, I think the best thing we can do is prevent future generations from growing up with strong gender stereotypes.

When you look closer into the Gender Wage Gap, you find that the 73-cents-on-the-dollar figure is exaggerated and wrong. It was calculated by just averaging ALL the women and ALL the men, rather than looking at people in equivalent jobs, equivalent qualifications, equivalent experience, etc. IIRC, there's still a 5% gap or so unaccounted for, but I've heard that more aggressive salary negotiation could explain that.

It's more that they (usually) can't produce a fertile offspring. For example, a lion and a tiger, two different species, can breed, but their offspring will very likely be sterile. Same with horses and donkeys, horses and zebras, and a number of other animals.
