Multiple Buck Encounters/Landowner Miscommunication

On these hunts I head to the private land I have permission to hunt. I know that I'm there to shoot does for sure and forgot to ask if I could shoot a buck. Of course, I end up seeing a decent buck to shoot. The landowner asked me why I didn't shoot, and I told him I thought I could only shoot does yet. In the end he gave me permission to shoot a buck if I would like.
