BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, op. 37
Yunchan Lim launched onto the international music stage when he was 14. He won second prize and the Chopin Special Award in his first-ever competition, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists in 2018. That same year, he stood out as the youngest participant in the Cooper International Competition, where he won the third prize and the audience prize, which provided the opportunity for him to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra. 2019 meant more accolades, when, at the age of 15, he was the youngest to win Korea’s IsangYun International Competition, where he also took home two special prizes.
Now just 18, he has performed across South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. He also participated in the recording of “2020 Young Musicians of Korea,” organized by the Korean Broadcasting System and released that November.
A native of Siheung, Yunchan currently studies at the Korea National University of Arts under Minsoo Sohn. Coming to Fort Worth, he says he is “looking forward to playing in front of the warmest and most passionate audience in the world.”

Yunchan Lim is taught by Min Soo Sohn, who was taught by Russell Shermann (who died 2 days ago, RIP), who was taught by Edward Steuermann, who was taught by Ferruccio Busoni, who was taught by Carl Reinecke, who was taught by Franz LISZT, who was taught by Carl Czerny who was taught by Ludwig van BEETHOVEN.

@@bennyksmusicalworld968 I know, but I (as a non-musician) still find it pretty mind-blowing. Musicians are very lucky to have this kind of connection to the history of their art. I think it is less common in Korea, and Yunchan Lim was lucky to have that Sohn/Shermann link.
And I think the sheer quality of all the teachers/musicians in this lineage is impressive. Though, when it comes to Liszt and some of his pupils, in particular, he seems to have taught so many musicians, it must have been a lot of master classes, rather than intensive instruction over many years!

Back from watching YCL perform Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and all I can say is that he has such a magical touch with the keys. A little girl (probably around 4yo) came with her father and she was completely immersed in his performance. That is such a precious image stuck in my head now. That is the power of Yunchan’s playing.
Fun little anecdote from yesterday’s performance - One of the violinists did a quick intro and said that he was fortunate to actually have been with the Forth Worth Symphony during this Cliburn 2022 competition and got to meet YCL. (Now I actually see his face in this video haha) He shared that “…we as musicians had this tally chart.. hedging bets on who would win and Yunchan was BY FAR our favorite. The whole time through” ❤ How amazing to have heard this from someone who was part of the orchestra during the 2022 Cliburn.
With all this being said, I firmly believe that all of YCL’s performances need to be recorded and televised for everyone to listen for centuries to come 😊
Wow. Thank you so much for sharing your experience at the Pittsburg concert. The little girl… the violinist from the Cliburn… the tally 😅… Yunchan truly gifts us with the joy of music and total immersion into everything he plays. I feel so fortunate to be able to listen to him play Rach 2 live next week in Baltimore but my nurturing side of me hopes he is returning to play at a time that is right for him. Hope his hand strain is completely gone and that his hands are 100% healthy. If he needs to rest more then I’m willing to wait as long as it takes

@@allceg I’ll be there Thursday. Thankful they added this day due to high demand. Yunchan with Marin Alsop is going to be special. Rach 2 tends to have the orchestra bury the sound of the piano at some points but I’m sure Marin won’t make that happen. 😊

I have never listened to the piano sound like this at 17:53~18:07. What a mistic sound!
The piano cadenza that starts at 14:11 and ends at 18:42 sounds absolutely brilliant. It is powerful, intense, compelling, and gripping. Throughout this section I noticed one lady violinist behind Yun Chan looked like she almost wanted to cry...
Beethoven, himself should have listened to this young-man's play...
The morning after the typhoon passed, it was so foggy that I couldn't see the house on the other side.

I was struck by how beautiful Yun-chan played the second movement. His performance was truly breathtaking and I couldn't help but feel captivated by his artistry.
The conductor's face is full of joy, satisfaction and happiness.
Same is my face.
He understands the real meaning of playing in concert. Flawless powerful and tenderly expressive. Beethoven never had it so good.

At 30:53, love that wisp of a smile. It's terrific to know that Yunchan Lim enjoys making this music as much as we enjoy listening to him do so.
Everything around 27:20 is so playfully exquisite. The banter, the teasing, the laugh with the orchestra. I see a secret garden party there.
I've been lost in Yunchan land for the last ten days after reading an article about him in the NYTimes before he performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. I've been mesmerized by everything he did during the Cliburn competition as well as by his earlier work. There is power as well as great sensitivity in his playing. I read people say they are hearing the music he performs in a completely new way and find myself agreeing. To say that this performance must be exactly as it was envisioned by Beethoven seems absurd and yet it feels true. We are blessed by this young man's devotion to his instrument and to the music he loves. This piece is deeply moving to me. Thanks to the Cliburn community for making so many of these brilliantly produced videos available for us to enjoy.

Classical, or orchestra? Classical is awesome. You can check out on UA-cam the ballads and waltzes of Chopin; Liszt's sonata in B minor and his transcendental etudes (the transcendental etudes were also performed by Yunchan Lim); Mozart & Beethoven's sonatas & much more masterpieces

His voicing is incredible, and his listening and responding, a true ensemble musician. His playing is so organic, like the music is speaking through him. Beethoven is listening.
A few ecxerpts from his recent interviews:
"We cannot see the 'real'/'true' things with our eyes. Music is invisible, not seen by eyes.. I think it is one of the few real/true things in this world. And it's the reason I will keep pursuing music for the rest of my life."
(Before the final) "I do not care whether I win or not, I'll just try my best to seek and deliver the heritage/legacy of the great musicians of the past to this age."
He said his purpose of playing the piano is to express the pain deep inside us and to heal people, again with music. "Music (played by me) can't deceive people so I always try to have a genuinely compassionate and understanding heart toward human beings and the world."
He often deliberately cuts himself from modern things or social media to fully interact with the original composer and his intent, and be immersed in the music itself. He said there's a lava-like singing inside him but to perfectly express that beauty of the song he needs to struggle for a long time, study and think a lot, and practice overnight, to go beyond the skills to the realm of pure art.
He also said that though he lives in this century, his mind is living in 19th with the great minds of that time. He is inspired by lots of old literature and everyday incidents. For example, he read the Divine Comedy of Dante countless times and searched lots of foreign documentaries to play a piece of Liszt.

I have been wandering down the rabbit hole of Yunchan World for several months now. He is the most interesting and magnetic pianist I have ever seen. His playing never gets old and makes you want to listen to it more. To be more precise, I want to watch him play every day. It is truly a pleasure to watch this teenage pianist perform. His expression as he transcends everything and becomes immersed in the music, his stage presence, his iconic hair that sometimes blows-I admit I always look forward to seeing his hair blowing-, and the way he looks at the conductor and orchestra are all a joy to watch.

I haven't been a fan of classical music but wow after watching Yunchan Lim I realized how lovely and beautiful to listen to Beethoven Mozart Chopin Rachmaninoff pieces. I have devoted to kpop as I see the exuberance of youth in them but the difference in Yunchan Lim is the elegance and energy combined that started my appreciation for classical stuff. His talent, humility and good looks... I'm now his fan and a follower of classical music.

He is just at home in Beethoven as he is in Rachmaninov. Look at him, not a trace of nerves in the opening tutti, instead letting himself be a part of the music even when he's not playing, his body swaying with the orchestra. This helps him navigate where he is at the music -- he considers himself not a soloist, but just another integral part to the overarching harmony of this tremendous concerto, not an ounce more "important" than any of the orchestral players.

If you haven't listened to Yunchan Lim's rendition of Bach's Siciliano yet, you should. Despite its short duration of only 5 minutes, it is truly impressive with its symmetry to Rach 3. The beauty of the piece brings tears to my eyes. Seymoure Bernstein also left a complimentary comment on the video. That video has already surpassed one million views.

And while it's fine to admire young upcoming talent which the winners are and time will tell what they become, it seems that people forget (or maybe they never knew) the great pianists of the past (we fortunately have recordings of many) and the present - meaning pianists still living and performing. I'd love to know who you listen to, who you admire aside from those you mentioned. I agree, eg, that Sokolov when "on" is phenomenal - it's a shame he pulled back from performing with orchestras. What do you think of Trifonov? But I want to hear from you who you think is great for the reasons you outline in your comment. The old timers still performing and those who recently (in past decade or so) emerged. Thanks if you respond.
Marin Alsop seems really enjoying the collaboration with Yunchan and having a good time. I couldn't help but notice her big smile and articulate and dance-like movement on the podium. What a conductor -- so gorgeous and lovely.

I was going to say nearly the same thing. Marin's a great presence on the podium, and the orchestra is both very well prepared and conducted. (Also, though I'm no feminist, lolz at the people of yesteryear who thought that women shouldn't be on the podium. Turns out, that's wrong.)

Toward the end, Marin Alsop is practically dancing, so tickled was she with the performance of a piece I'm sure she's conducted dozens of times. After Yunchan's final chord, her beaming smile and impatient embrace with Lim Yunchan says it all.

Delicate, sensitive, unselfish, meaningful. I LOVE how he weaves in and out of the orchestra like a bird flying or fish swimming freely. Every single note is perfectly articulated and does not go to waste. The level of respect and syncopation between him and the orchestra is unreal! Never has Beethoven made so much sense and sounded so utterly beautiful. I want to rush to the piano and weep!

I just watched Yunchan playing the same concerto at the IsangYun competition, which he won as the youngest participant ever at the age of 14… While just as good, his playing at VC showed more poise and controlled passion… Simply breathtaking.

The cleanest Piano opening (Marvellous) to this work I had ever heard and so I was hooked from the get go. I think if Beethoven had had a student like this lad he'd have written orchestral pieces just for him. I love the way he makes me want to laugh with joy at times in the Mozart 22 and here (3rd mvt.) Thank you. The peerless introspective reflective quality of the second movement was exceptional-this is an incredible musician emerging here. Yunchan's other recording of the Beethoven 5th in Tokyo, for me, has now become the definitive Emperor to beat all other renditions, even Richter's, which previously held the candle for me. Also his recent wonderful Beethoven 4th with Myung Whun Chung is yumptious. Really admire the way he watches his conductor like a hawk and acknowledges the orchestral contributions.

I am captivated by this piano concerto every time I listen to Yunchan's playing, so I can't help but just keep listening over and over again. Tears blurred my eyes in the 2nd movement this time. He plays the piano so beautifully and he has a absolute sense of making perfect sound. I think he is a true genius with a brilliant artistry and innocent soul..
Marin Alsop is also a great conductor who leads and inspires the performer and the whole orchestra with all her heart.
Even though I have listened to this marvelous performance for more than 50 times, I can't get enough of it.

The Cliburn "Magic Trio"...soloist, conductor and orchestra. They are as one. It's mind boggling to me to see (and hear!) how much in touch they are with each other. Yunchan, Alsop and Fort Worth Symphony should travel the world together. They are a magnificent work of art. 😇

I happened to listen to the other competitor's performance of this same concerto and although I didn't dislike it, it felt just flat 2D.. while Yunchan's every note and sound totally felt 3D, sometimes even 4D - overflowing with such shining sensitivity and the deepest emotions I didn't even know I could feel.
His sound also mixes with the orchestra so seamlessly and beautifully

His teacher says that he practices 14 hours a day til collapses! As a fellow korean who plays piano, I'm very proud of his brilliance!
His playing is magnificantly clean and sensitive, even if there are a few passages in which the notes sound a bit too staccato.
As I watch this video several times,
I can now see that the some of people in the orchestra are so impressed by this innocent enthusiastic music genius.
I think that some of these people might have played more seriously and enthusiastically on this stage, inspired by Lim.

In my life, I swear I have never listened to one single orchestra from the beginning until the end because orchestra makes me sleepy. However, I have watched and listened to all Yunchan's performances in the Cliburn competition from the beginning till the end. With Yunchan Lim it was different. I can't explain it because I don't know much about classic and all. While listening, I felt comforted? filled my heart with pure love? longing? Anyway, I never knew piano could sound so beautiful. I don't know classic but this guy is extraordinary, that's for sure.

You listened because you are Korean, he is Korean and there you are akin with him. Plus, he is young, fresh and attractive to watch with a cool hairstyle, mysterious BTS " look " and the video is clear, the sounds modern and crisp, the conductor is energetic, so you listened FULLY for the first time. Very good. Now you may venture into classical music with new ears and open, curious eyes. Go and see the new Universe of composers who, if you give your true attention, will touch on emotions you may have never known you had within you to feel. They will lighten and expand your soul.
So many composers, so many musicians.
I suggest you listen to the late great pianist Master Claudio Arrau. His Beethoven, Chopin, Listz, DeBussy and all others are beyond enchanting and invigorating but will indeed move your SOUL.
Yes, Yunchan (& these great musicians) is someone who opens door to the classical world. We can simply walk in and experience the goodness of it.
He has talent to express his emotions in the music. My favorite song what I heard at least thousand times, he played it and it was incredible and different.

If I weren’t seeing this, I would not believe that an 18 year old (now 19) was playing this concerto from memory. Awe-inspiring and majestic, to say the least! Just imagine what his music would be like ten, twenty years from now. I pray that God will continue to mend and heal this broken world of ours with the sublime musicality of this young artist Yunchan Lim.

It's almost 'unfair' to be this talented! But I think it's what 'the Gods' had planned for him: To be among the best pianists in the world! And I don't blame him for having messed up my daily schedule, because it is due to this phenomenal artist that I constantly watch the various UA-cam videos and listen to his piano performances, and consequently do not get around to fulfilling obligations of a household nature. It's because of the sheer magic that comes from the music. Bravo!, Bravo! master Yunchan Lim 👏👏👏
