World-renowned organist Thomas Trotter celebrates the release of his new album with a free recital, broadcast live from the Chapel of King's College Cambridge.
Described as "genuinely exceptional" by Gramophone magazine, Thomas's new recording of Duruflé's complete organ works has just been released on the King's College label. Music from the album will feature in this recital too, including Duruflé's Suite. Thomas will intersperse Duruflé's music with music by the contemporary Canadian composer Rachel Laurin.
Available exclusively online, Thomas's recital will be broadcast live on Facebook and UA-cam, and will be free to watch.

Absolutely staggering performance. Thrilling and sublimely musical. I've never heard the Durufle played with such energy and sheer passion. The Kings College's Harrison instrument has certainly justified every penny spent on its recent overhaul and rebuild. Awesome seems somewhat inadequate a term to describe its full organ sound blazing mercilessly around the Chapel's stone firmament.
I heard Thomas Trotter play the Durufle Suite Op. 5 on the excellent Aeolian-Skinner organ at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, NY...some 40 years ago. I said at the time that it was the finest performance of this challenging work that I'd ever heard. Well....I think it was, but this triumph may be even greater! What a remarkable combination of repertoire, organ, and organist. Magnificent from start to finish.
Not forgetting also the excellent accoustics of the chapel.

If the opening Durufle piece on this doesn't make the hair on your arms stand up, you're not a true lover of the organ. The Harrison is perfectly voiced in a perfect room.

Complimenting the organ's structural excellence is its placement which like Beverley and Gloucester, speaks directly into the building unhindered by cramped chamber or side inglenook. Superb playing by Master Trotter.

Wonderful. I'm glad you played the Rachel Laurin pieces. In 1984 I went on an RSCM conference, led by Lionel Dakers and David Lumsden, in Toronto, Canada. Much of the music we sang and listened to was by Rachel Laurin, which was far-sighted of them as she was then only just beginning to be well known. I have loved her music ever since.
Mr Trotter is the absolute tops. I had the honor of turning pages and doing stops for him in 2001 at St. Thomas.

Thanks for this beautiful performance. My dad would have loved this, including the lovely explanation of all the stops. We are fortunate to have such access via UA-cam in 2021. It just wasn't available even a few years ago when he was still alive. We are very privileged.

One of the finest organists of our day, playing one of the very greatest English, romantic organs: what could be better?!?
It seems like H & H perfected their earlier work with the recent rebuild.
I would even say that this is the perfect organ for Duruflé; a multitude of beautiful soft stops, and enormous - but musical - power, when needed.
Might I recommend you to look for Gert van Hoef on UA-cam, when talking about great organists of our time.

With all due respect Mr Trotter! I’ve always admired those who can play on an intricate structure like a church organ. My great-grandfather was also a reformed cantor in Câmpia Turzii, Transylvania (my family is Hungarian), unfortunately I could no longer know him.

Great recital! You'd think Duruflé required Cavaillé-Coll but those pieces sounded magnificent on the King's organ.
I never understood how such a massive organ as King's College Chapel could look so tiny, as if it were merely some tiny North German chapel organ.
Hello, the larger stops such as the 32' reed on the pedal are positioned within the Quire screen on the south side of the main organ case. So if you look at the organ at 7:59, the larger pipes are within the screen to the left of the organ case. The level here is much deeper than the ground level, and is called the 'South Screen pit'. The bottom six notes of the 16' Double Open Diapason are also placed here, as well as the bottom notes of the 32' Double Open Wood. The Solo division, which also contains the Great reeds, are also placed in the pit. Some of the 32' Double Open Wood pipes are also placed horizontally across the top of the Quire screen. It is a clever arrangement, and is certainly deceptive if you compare the specification of the instrument to just the organ case alone.

Number one: Commenting that on a thread about organ music, when your religion has the worst record of persecuting music ever seen in history, and forbids instrumental music anywhere near a place of worship. Do you have the least idea of how offensive that kind of oppression is to Christians and Jews?

Your album is my goto Durufle. Now i know why. Besides your virtuoso performance, the instrument has so many stops that bring out the best in Durufle's catalouge. Bright, clean, and clear stops that allow the lovely melodies to show through the dresm state accompaniments. Thank you the wonderful look at this great instrument and you fabulous playing technique. Any plans to mix this into multichannel?
