  • Lower Nitrates in Reef Tank using Sea Lettuce Refugium in Display Tank. If you have high nitrates in your saltwater aquarium, you can create a small refugium in your display tank, using the lighting for your aquarium. The idea is to have the cheato or sea lettuce grown and out compete the algae in your aquarium by consuming the nitrates. Using algae (cheato or sea lettuce) to combat algae. A large refugium isn't required to battle nitrates in a reef tank, especially when using sea lettuce. As Sea Lettuce grows, you can use it to feed your tang fish. saltwater aquarium care and maintenance videos by rotter tube reef.

    Ayyyy! I added sea lettuce to my Pacific Ocean tank last night. I’ve got Spot, a big spotted bass, and Baylee a big kelp bass. Spot was wearing the new lettuce as a hat when I got home from work. Lol. He is loving it. #sealettucelove #fishlove #thepacific

    40 ppm nitrate for canisters is actually pretty good. A clam would love your tank!

    I'm running a canister filter with a little bit of macro algae and keeping nitrates above 0 is tough!
    Even with heavy feeding.

      Crazy. How often do you clean it?

      @@ROTTERtube I was cleaning the prefilter once every two weeks then every 4 but now I'm at 6 weeks. Still no nitrates or phosphates. I started dosing a few weeks back. Because I got hit with dinos from the low nutrients. Even with the dosing the macro algae is a machine! I took most of it out and just left one species for now

      @@IndoorEcosystem That's great news. How large is your refugium?

    Logic thinking - can't fail, most reefers wouldn't want a box growing algae, but using it to feed the tangs is appealing-as a reefer in the 20+ nitrate mark, thank you steve 👍

      Yeah, and since this sea lettuce is supposed to suck up nitrates like a sponge, it's a win win.

    I wonder if you added an algae reactor plumbed into the return from the canister filter would work?

    Marine pure worked for me.. My nitrates never go above 5

      @ROTTERtube  4 місяці тому

      That's great! You know, I tried the marine pure and it did nothing for me on my last tank, the 75 gallon. I saw no difference. I wondered if the block was actually capturing the bad stuff and it was rotting in the blocks. I took them out

    Why don't you just carbon dose? If your aim is simply to reduce nitrates/phosphate, I'd recommend you just carbon dose.
    This is for anyone interested in reading my 2 cents worth.
    Personally I think the main goal of a refugium is to create a safe heaven to grow life that would otherwise have a hard time surviving in the display. This is aim mainly at growing copepods which is primary done to feed dragonets. The side feature is to grow macro algae which absorbs nitrates/phosphates as it grows. You are required to harvest the macro algae to ensure removal of nitrates. If you don't and the macro algae dies, the nitrate/phosphate will just re enter the water column. On top of that, setting up a refugium for the purpose of nitrate/phosphate removal requires the use of light especially those pink/purple ones targeted at growing macro algae. This frequently leads to lightspill in the sump which creates a serious mess! Not to mention additional electricity cost and heat into the sump.
    If all you're interested in is removing nitrate/phosphate, I think carbon dosing is far more superior and effective. Mess free as well. Either through liquid, pellets or cubes. Carbon dosing works by feeding a carbon source to the nitrate/phosphate consuming bacteria. A carbon source is fed to these bacteria which encourages them to multiply. They multiply fast consuming the carbon source together with phosphate and nitrate. In the process, they create a nitrate/phosphate rich biomass which floats away and gets removed via protein skimming. When they come to the end of their life, they die and also get removed via protein skimming. Thats why we always see such carbon dosing reactors and whatnot close to the protein skimmer inlet.
    I use Orca Titanium Cube together with an airpump which has worked very well for me..
