    As an aspiring mechanic, I love seeing and watching videos like this. One day I'll have a shop with a lift. Came across a 2009 Edge Sport AWD with just over 100k miles for $2k needing a PTU replacement. So I searched replacing one and came across this. I'm very familiar with vehicles, only being limited by not having access to a lift and my own shop. I love your attitude. Crappy job that takes some skill and a good attitude to accomplish. Kudos! Man that rust though.

      yeah the rust up here in ontario with all the salt they pound on the roads in the winter just destroys these vehicles! but yeah just keep a positive attitude and always keep thinking about how to fix or deal with any issue that pops up and everything will be tickidy boo! 🤣 like my buddy always says...Man made it..Man can fix it! 🍻

    I've watched a few videos of guys tackling this job and after watching you, I have the drive to replace the one my daughter's car may need. I was surprised you didn't remove the dogbone or the black crossbar and still was able to remove it. You're my kinda guy trying to see if it works out before taking loose a bunch of things. Super good video and explanation.

      @rednecksdirtyhands  Рік тому

      thank you! yeah usually a howl like that is a hub bearing but if they are just starting to dry out and make noise they can be hard to diagnose....you can try what I do and lift it in the air and spin each wheel by hand while you hold the suspension spring by that wheel at the same time.if that bearing is the one causing the noise you will be able to feel it resonate through the spring. it will feel smooth if it's not the one. giver a try and see, hopefully it helps ya find it! cheers 🍻

    Was the burnt fluid smell that gave mine away. Was the third mechanic that knew what it was just by the smell. The mechanic does the repairs on the state police vehicles, evidently the AWD Taurus has the same drive train and it is a common problem for the Taurus. Dealership had to replace a driveshaft seal when I purchased the vehicle, so I take it this unit could’ve went out due to the lack of diff fluid?

It smelled so back. The bearings was all blue. The housing was blue. The race was melted onto the pinion. It had a little oil in it but it was mostly mud and just burned to shit. I seen a few cooked before but this was above and beyond. I put it back together told him he was gonna probably be better off trying to get a used axle and changing it out. I didn't think I could get it apart without trashing the housing. Even if I could have the housing would have been the only thing left that wasn't trashed. I don't have a shop or anything. I was asked to give it a look at by a buddy of mine. I told him if he wanted to tackle it go ahead. I would do a axle swap but I ain't gonna even try to tear down that shit storm. The parts would be at least double what a used axle would cost. Maybe more plus the labor.

      If you should happen to try to replace or rebuild one, do yourself a favor and drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the PTU for a drain plug. FORD in their infinite wisdom only put a fill plug and breath hole in these units, setting them up eventual catastrophic failure. Living up to their name, Fix Or Repair Daily, I drilled and tapped mine at 125k like some others did on UA-cam to avoid a $3,750 repair job. I'm no automotive engineer, but common sense says this is a poor design doomed and destine to seize up based on its location and the inability to add drain and replace the gear oil. My 09 Edge has a new lease on life and runs slicker than snail 🐌 snot.
