Thanks for this video. I have 06 Escape started to leak tranny fluid out passenger side axle. I assumed it was just seal there. I got the transaxle out, but then learned from you tubes the problem is seal on transmission side. Now I am debating to do this job, it would be similar jacked up in garage, or get quotes for garage to do it, or get rid of the darn thing. So it's encouraging that you pulled off this job in the garage. I got it for almost free due to rusted out passenger side rear shock rusted out from frame. Fixed that with a little creativity. I do dread trying to get those back side exhaust parts off. The way they pack in these V6 engines is not friendly to the mechanic. I might be getting too rusty and old to do this ;)

Guys, as he has mentioned; the PTU is getting overheated due to exhaust heat and small oil capacity. So to stop having to replace bearings ( or the entire unit) , change the oil in the PTO every 20,000 miles . On newer models (mine is a 2011) you must pump the oil out with a suction pump (there is no drain plug) ! It is a pain, but much cheaper than replacing the unit.

You can drill and tap in your own drain plug. Works wonders.

You can get the alternator out through the passenger side wheel well. You just have to flip it over and backward while it's in there and it slides out between the engine and subframe. If I remember correctly you have to situate it so the pulley is facing the front of the vehicle.

After seeing three of these videos, I decided to pay a mechanic. I could have done it to my 08 Hybrid, but I decided it was more cost efficient for me to work that day instead of crawling under there. Great video.

Thanks. This needed to be replaced in my Escape. I was told by the mechanic that there was nothing I did that caused this but was a result of the age of the car.: 16 years, 138,000 miles.

Good video. I have a 2010 Ford Escape AWD that has the PTU down below by the crank shaft so I missed all that fun.
Hope the rest of you folks will luck out too.

Looks like the same nightmare I'm working on. Doing an engine swap on mine. Bought the Escape with a bad engine. Will be re-sealing the PTU housing that you had off. Looks like you are using the same silicone I'll be using.
Mine has about 85,000 miles. But I'll be replacing the alternator like you as well because I don't want to have to pull the exhaust etc to get to it if it goes out later. Thanks

Seems foolish to not replace the alternator when you're already in there, looks like it would be a nightmare of a job on its own. I use the Permatex Ultra Grey for all my sealing needs, seems to do an excellent job. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

Was the noise you heard at particular speeds, or just generally always there?
I've got noise around 20 and 40, but it's clear around 30 and 50 or more.
But that sound was familiar when it's at its worst, which seems much more at 40 than 20.
Though it looks like you were probably going under 20, and getting it consistently.
Really hope I don't have to replace that, but it doesn't seem an impossible job. Just need the space to work and the time.

10 years and one ex-wife out of warranty.
Some models do have a factory drain plug. My recently acquired 2005 XLT V-6 with 190,000 miles does. Although it doesn't look like it to me, but a previous owner may have replaced the original with an updated unit.
My mystery is it is not making excessive noise, but the output shaft, while tight and not wobbly, has a "sandy-gravelly" feel when turning it by hand. Not sure if it is the shaft bearing or what is causing it.

Thank you for showing us how that transfer case comes out of your 2005 by the way I I didn't hear if it was a V6 or a 4 cylinder it doesn't really matter but I like how you showed how the case comes apart that was great and I'm amazed like you said how those bearings were even still intact with all that metal and all that crushed gearing inside that transfercase , oh my God that was that A mess well thank you for showing us .

I am losing all my transmission fluid when car sits for a few days. Is it possible that this leak is coming through the transfer case seals? Seeing quarts of fluid. Thinking sitting that long the torque converter is full and the seals through the transfer case are causing this mess. Some input that this is may or may not be the cause would help me.

I had mine changed took 2 and a half months to get it done and the parts because of covid. It ran for a week and a half now it leaks transmission fluid fluid badly between the ptu case and transmission mating surfaces. Not sure what was damaged or missed. I would have liked to see the other side of the ptu and the procedure for re installation ...

I successfully did this PITA job 3 years ago, except for 1 detail. Since, have a mystery engine oil leak showing up on the oil pan ONLY at the firewall (mainly drivers side).
Oil pan & gasket replaced more than once. As have both valve covers, timing cover, PCV & oil pressure switch. Am I missing something obvious that I may have done wrong
    during the PTO reinstall?

My 2005 escape xlt ,just about a week ago made a sound like i hit a big piece of road debris,After that i smelled a burnt rubber smell for about 15-20 seconds and then it went away.I also felt a change in the road noise and a slight vibration.I continued on because i was about 10 miles from home.I exited the highway and stopped at the light, wen it turned green i hit the gas in a left turn and another pop and a loud metal grinding sound ,i then went to pull to the side to see wat was up and wen i took my foot off the gas the escape locked up...I looked and seen nothing, got back in and tried reverse and that worked, forward i couldnt move ,i ended up making a uturn i n reverse and drove the rest of the way home in reverse about a mile or so....I visually see nothing wrong underneath ,and i am 99% sure its the transfer case

Thanks for the awesome video! I had a few questions and was hoping you may be able to give some insight. I replaced a PTU in my folks 05' XLT recently, upon getting it all put back together, there is a vibration that is pretty severe while driving. It does seem to vanish while turning, also seems to be more prominent upon acceleration.
Old one failed while driving down the road. The main bolt holding the driveshaft CV hub to the output shaft on the PTU came loose during the incident and I have a feeling the CV hub could of become damaged. Any ideas what could be causing the vibration? Thanks for any help and again, thank you for the video! It helped A LOT during the removal/installation process.

    • @ohger1
      @ohger1 2 роки тому +1

I noticed a vibration in my 05 on the highway for a month or so. Then the AWD system went out (driveshaft from PTU stopped turning). Since the AWD quit (I think the PTU failed internally), the vibration went away. My point is that if you bought a used PTU, the vibration might be coming from that. If you put in a new PTU, check the center u-joint on the main driveshaft. Good luck.

My sister has a 2010 mercury mariner, I'm not sure what happen exactly but it looks like the transfer case is barely attached to the transmission if at all and the mount at the top is completely broken off, well looks like some kind of aluminum mount, or maybe it's part of the transfer case. Only thing holding it in I could see is the axle/cv axle. But yeah I told her it's above my skills and she needs a real mechanic and it's going to cost a lot. It's a damn shame because it's still pretty clean low miles.

The lincoln MKZ AWD is the highest rated at the most cost to maintain because nobody thinks about all the moving parts it was hard to find a naturally aspirated V6 most are turbo crap they claim 30 k miles to change the fluid it was originally a life time fluid lube doesn't last forever sorry Ford

I took my 2016 lincoln in for routine maintenance drain and fill or suck and full the PTU it was cracked on the top some Certified car 29,500 miles it was trashed. Come July this year I will have them drain and fill even though I have a premium care warranty until 2027 I want to see just how much damage to the gear oil after 1 year

Its like the transmission cant downshift. Any ideas fellow mechanics im truck mechanic and ill be hooking it up to IDS on Monday
