I'm not sure if the doors to the shipping container were as secure as the wall to the bunker. Most of the blast wave must have gone into blowing the doors off instead of bouncing about the room.

EXACTLY this! It annoyed me SO much when they did this. All the experience they had wirh explosives, C4 especially and they thought a thin metal door propped with some sleepers would contain that blast the same as a reinforced concrete bunker?!

and the walls of their bunker deformed quite a bit, probably absorbing the shock instead of bouncing it. If it was a concrete box, I doubt it would've happened. Add to that what another comment mentioned, about the body being thrown from the explosion and hitting the walls, and I'm really tempted to think the bunker attempt was insufficient as an experiment. And I think they should've picked it up as soon as the doors blasted open vs being more or less intact in the control test to scale. Budget restrictions are understandable, but man... it still leaves a bad taste.

@@young3nsinglej Not every door inside a bunker is a blast door. If it was a single room within a larger complex, it may have just been a regular door that'd be far less sturdy than the doors of a shipping container.
On the flip side, the door to the bunker would not have been 8ft high by 8ft wide so there would have been at least some reflection off of the rest of that wall.
However, given that they said the overall size of the bunker was bigger than that container I'd still say the Myth deserves to be labelled busted.

Okay, let's break this Hitler thing down:
Originally, the plan Stauffenberg had was to use 2 kilos of explosives. He also knew WELL in advance that the meeting was not in the Wolfsschanze. Almost a week in advance. He relied entirely on the proximity of the explosion and the extra explosives. However, he could not get both packs into the meeting and he could not place the briefcase close enough to Adolf. That was the issue. It had nothing to do with the fact that it wasn't in the bunker.

  • @IIIAnchani
    @IIIAnchani 6 місяців тому +9

what truly made the difference was that the second briefcase wasn't put right next to it. Stauffenberg didn't have time to arm both bombs, but they'd have detonated sympathetically if they had been next to each other, killing all in the room.

The third factor (besides pressure shock wave and shrapnel) that affects survivability in a blast -- which they didn't mention -- is the issue of the body itself becoming a projectile and slamming against a wall or other object that brings it to a fast stop. The longer room with walls further away in the actual Wolf's Lair explosion location might have reduced the g-forces of that possible secondary impact, compared to a smaller underground room in which Hitler would have presumably been thrown against a nearby surrounding wall with a higher level of impact force. Given that four people died in the original explosion as it was (even in the larger room with windows), I have to think the underground room, if the meeting had happened there, would very possibly have been lethal to many in the room.

    • @flammenjc

The whole idea was to have a confined explosion similar to an underground bunker vs. an explosion in an above ground conference room. While Adam tells us that the container was smaller than the actual bunker I am fairly sure that Hitler's reinforced concrete bunker had no shipping container doors with direct access to the outside that would immediately release all the pressure as was evident in the Mythbuster experiment. I would say the only thing here busted was the Mythbusters more or less useless attempt at creating an 'underground bunker'.

Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg already knew, that the briefing would have been held in the house above the ground, and therefore he had two briefcases with 1kg of explosives each.
On an excuse right before the meeting, he activated and timed the first bomb, but as only one handed, he hadn't had enough time to activate the second bomb as well.
As von Stauffenberg was interrupted, only one breifcase had the timer.
He entered the situation room only with one briefcase, the second one was with his adjudicator, who had no access to the room.
So the double amount of explosives was planned, and it was known, that the briefing would be held in the situation room, rather than the bunker, but instead of putting both briefcases on one spot, the second wasn't in the room.
    And the rest is history.

So much wrong with that second explosion (the "bunker" one). For starters: If one whole side of the container got blown off from the blast, the shockwave clearly escaped the room. Assuming that the RL bunker was meant to withstand bombs and/or artillery fire, I'm pretty sure it would've contained the explosion far better than that POS shipping container could. Reinforced concrete vs a rusty old container? Yeah ...
Plus there are some quite important facts that were either ignored or not mentioned in the episode. Like the fact that Stauffenberg had double the amount of explosives than what he eventually used - nobody knows for sure why he only used one block of plastique, but the theory is that he ran out of time while arming the blasting caps and then, weirdly, didn't simply put the second block (minus blasting cap) into the briefcase.
Also: The table Adam built looks much more flimsy than the one that was actually there on the day - which was made from solid oak and of extremely sturdy construction. The legs also had a different, much more solid shape and would've blocked quite a lot of the blast pressure in RL. The bag originally sat on Hilter's side of one of the legs but an aide moved it to the far side of that leg, so the leg sat between the target and the bomb when it went off.
Also, also: There were other people in the room with the target - those should probably be simulated in the experiment to get a more meaningful result.
Also, also, also: I don't remember where I caught it, but there was a whole documentary about the assassination attempt and about the blast where they put a lot more effort into recreating the events of the day. I think they tested all sort of hypothetical scenarios, like "what would've happened if Stauffenberg had used all the explosives he had on him?", etc. The infuriating thing was that they found multiple scenarios in which Hilter would've died - and one of those was the explosion in the bunker.

    About the slap...
Recently, I've been listening to podcasts about diet and especially about fasting and everyone seems to agree that fasting for many hours will sharpen your senses.
If you think about it, it makes sense. Back then, people needed to hunt before they got to eat and the longer you go without eating, the more you need to rely on your senses and reflexes to be good at hunting.
The opposite of being cold and hungry is being comfortable and I don't think that being comfortable helps to hunt or, in this case, increases your performance during the test. Even though the test results seem to demonstrate that they were impaired, I wonder if being hungry and cold didn't actually boost their adrenaline, just like the slap did.
