the authenticity on these older mythbuster videos are really something... they just have this honest sympathic pioneering vibe over them..love it.
It's what made it so great. It was like they crew were just filming them.
Rare episode where they work together with the build team and they have a lot of screentime together
I love those.
I don't really like the jumping back and forth (at least there are no TV ads in between). I'd much rather have in sequence as it used to be.
This is my ALL-TIME FAVOURITE Mythbusters! The catapult is SO "Roadrunner" with it slamming Buster into the ground and then falling completely apart that it should say "ACME" on the side.
Jamie unironically eats Rimworld's Nutrient Paste? Not surprised!
We've seen him eating his sandwich lunch while working.
I guess that for Jamie eating paste is an efficient way to eat lunch.
The thought of an ILM revolt and a room full of people telling him to use a spoon has absolutely sent me.
Scottie is so underrated.
Definitely! The supposed drama that forced her to leave was childish.
@@Not-TheOne can you elaborate more? My memory is kinda hazy about this one
@@ryannovel8892 yeah lol i wanna know, i remember watching this show as a kid
@@mattbanks3517 nevermind. I did quick Googling. She was fired by Jamie due to the Baghdad Battery incident. She was responsible for the Team 2, so the blame fell on her.
She's currently a dentist/dental hygienist from what I read.
@@ryannovel8892 Adam got shocked by Baghdad battery as a prank that Scottie did. People overreacted and she wasnt in the series anymore. Its mostly hearsay but thats the .... myth :D
Any other Brits here? who can't stop laughing like a school boy at "The Tosser". For the benefit of any Americans, "Tosser" means something VERY rude in this country.😮😂
@TheZacDJ right. Isn't it another term for wanker or some?
Me too, The Romans developed many Catapult type machines none of which needed a diesel engine. we built one in boarding school.
Indeed lol
Learned recently from a friend who went to NYC that there's a US forces submarine called the USS Growler! (You CAN get inside this Growler and have a look around. Confirmed on Wikipedia). 😂
@@bazra19or that the Chinese developed the original trebuchet
46:26 Still funny how the axle extensions/wheels just collapse in the exact right momend like someone pushed a release button. XD
they should block lift when it reaches a vertical position (90 degrees to the ground) and count on the action of the principle of conservation of momentum.
In Netherlands you are needing fal protection harnas that hooks to basket. Otherwise you are not allowd to use it.
@@-allornothing-Not only in the Netherlands, in Germany, and I'm pretty sure in the rest of the EU as well.
"let's hope that doesn't happen" Famous words in MB
Just great camera work and overall atmosphere in this episode...
It's common knowledge that the AC burns more gas than having your windows down. Especially when you stop at lights. Can't believe Adam was surprised.
I believe this is the first ‘all hands on deck’ episode.
It’s pretty neat.
Those long armed lifts can be dangerous, I did once see someone get catapulted out of the basket when the wheels at the other end went over a speed-bump. He wasn't thrown over a house, it was only just enough to be thrown over the rail of the basket, but still pretty nasty.
gotta love the "2 cases of beer" at the end.
There was a somewhat early "Mythbusters Revealed" episode where they've talked about the case of beer penalty, and Jamie was the only one of the cast and crew not to have fallen to it... until someone (probably on the crew) called him during said interview.
Love the early episodes where it seems more like a big family, and well lets be honest, less production value, AND they actually have to follow a budget, which leads to some nice characters that drop in like the Garbage Place guys.
The early Mythbuster episode looked way more fun to work on then the later seasons (not that any season of MB wouldn't of been fun to work on), like a bunch on engineering students messing around with crap they found in a junkyard. Super fun, dangerous, and injury prone. It feel like later seasons were missing the crew interactions with the main cast, like the camera man being cold in the car or the phone going off at the end, it's stuff like that the lets you know everyone on set was having a good time.
Good way to start the day
This one was fun!
I hope the guy they sent back in time to get that medieval footage got payed well. That was some great work!
They make a one big mistake:They extend the bow,who make the arm more long and less opportunity for Buster to be trow far away
5:20🤔 When your dealer warranty is up....
Idk... Guy makes me question his knowledge, and I probably know 1% of what he does about that rig
A few years ago in Hungary two men died, when they tried to use a boom lift to pull something up and the ropes got stuck. The safety mechanism banned the moving. No up, no down. Then they cut the rope and the strained machine catapulted them to the death. The myth is not busted.
This is indeed missing the moment of conservation rule, the release and build-up, the physics behind the catapult. Let's state you try to move a forklift with a boom lift, the weight is high so at some point there is alot of force on the boom that start coming of the ground with its fore wheels due to the counterforce of the forklift, suddenly the strap with the forklift breaks and you get a nasty catapult scenario where you can fly a long distance thru the air and smash with an impact of multiple Gs into the surrounding, and the results wouldn't be pretty.
Their creation is more a balance force principle, like you would be able to lift a whole car with one hand. Using a long leverage pivot applied to a metal construction and a rope below it with the total construction ratio of 1 to 80, or 1 to 200 depending on some carateristics. So their counter balance for their boom is more like the rope in your hand that you suddenly let go of.
The scenario laid out was about lifting an engine block and no mention of ropes getting stuck, so the original myth is, in fact, busted
I still remember my dad showing me this show was aired and I was fascinated by it as a kid
I thought Scotty was the engineer on the Enterprise! She is just as good 😊
Had so much fun on the boom, almost got launched out more than once or twice…lol. That’s why you gotta tie in!
Could the car fuel usage hit a point when if you go to 55 it's better to use ac but at 45 it isnt?
Yes, somehow they realized later that the transition point is actually about 50 (can't remember the details; it was years ago).
They should probably have used the same car or used 2 cars but ran the test twice, alternatine the set up of the cars.
Important to note it's AC on FULL BLAST vs windows open. AC on full blast is a LOT colder than windows open as you actually add cold air vs just letting warm outside air in....
So for the same temperature experience you can probably have the AC on 10% and be more comfortable (also with noise) and not that worse in efficiency.
@daza3620 Exactly. In later episodes they figured out that identical cars can have different fuel consumptions.
@@SyntheticFuture For sure, I would rather use AC
35:57 😆🤣
Heck of a build, fair play. And I'm also surprised at how the windows down is more efficient at slower speeds than the AC. I'm guessing it would be reversed if it's at higher speeds though because of the WAY higher drag, also, it's noisy AF...
It's obvious from the beginning that if you want to throw something in the air this way then you should get very good pre-tension. It rather happened, like they said, when the machine stuck lifting. But the guy must have continued to push the lever. So it's possible even that the back part of the lifter had been rised above the ground due to the tension.
13:12 "The tosser" 😅😅
48:45 BLOOPER 😂
25:20 that is some atrocious MPG... I would overhaul the engine every weekend to figure out whats going on..
Damn, those early episodes were very sketchy. Insurance company might have been sweating bullets with every episode.
And in the later episodes the insurance company finally found some trust in the Mythbusters and allowed more stuff they never allowed in the earlier episodes. XD
@@JackMacLupusguess insurance saw that MB used increasingly help of professionals and also became increasingly professional themselves. That's why insurance was probably more lenient towards the Mythbusters.
26:08 Nice shot of Adam sitting in the car? Who is that???
Thanks for more full episodes 😂
Never saw him kissing that vacuum cleaner motor. :D That was smart -- nothing to say!))
i thought the crane is supposed to be still trying to pull upward when it lets go
I hate to be weird but Kari in that bowler hat got me 🤩😍
Scottie was my favorite..I loved her
I personally observed that at low speed it's better with the windows down, but AC on at higher speeds.
As someone from the UK that name is hilasious
I love scottie. She can be a wife and a buddy to fix a car together
The fuel mileage test, I feel, would be better done on a track like Laguna Seca, or a road course similar, to add in the variable of braking and different speeds in turns and straights., even some altitude/climbs to add more throttle application.
Not that these tests aren't valid, this is just the opinions of a motoring enthusiast who knows there are many variables in driving
So no one else here knows that "tosser" is English slang that is a bit rude?
I bet if the Mythbusters knew, they wouldn't have called it "The Tosser"
Kari and Buster wears that typical British hat and you still wonder if they know what tosser means? I can guarantee you that name was a very deliberate choice.
@@tibornagy7903 It's called a "bowler" hat. You didn't even know the name so you're presuming. Just because they wear a hat from England, they must know everything about England right?
I'm currently wearing some converse shoes, that means I know everything about America, Right?
Is not it ruder than "wanker"... ;w;)
@@colonthree I would say it is because both terms can be used in the same way and as the same insult.
A tosser/wanker is the same
I bet they knew =)
Scottie looks like a real life Borderlands character
I miss Scottie! She was so much fun!
Kari's hat game is impeccable,
"I think this has to be a world first..........either that or it's just stupid" - Jamie
Or both.
Unofficial show motto tbh.
That computer was definitely paid to advertise A/C equipped vehicles!
5:30 you work for gov Guam?
Easier test is to run the ac test on electric vehicles with and without heat pump, also it’s relevant the settings of temperature
I am sure Scottie is brilliant in whatever she does.
Thanks for reuplouad the video
The Tosser????
Obviously not the same meaning as UK English!
Heat pump in the ac test? Also both speed and temperature impact differently on both cases so I wouldn’t call it busted
33:56 That's what she said!
"Average Joe" does not crank his AC to the point he needs a coat, though.
I got my AC usually set at 20.5-21 degrees, that's comfy in both summer and winter.
On one hand you got an awesome catapult myth and then a mind numbingly boring fuel efficiency myth... this is one of the most uneven episodes of anything ever
A trebuchet works with an slingshot effect
Tension between team kari/savage vs scottie / hyneman
i miss scottie, bless her heart.
You cannot shoot something like that unless the accelerator arm is stopped abruptly. When it does, inertia keeps whatever is on the arm going. That's how a catapult actually works. Its arm is stopped abruptly. If the arm keeps going in a circular motion, then whatever is on the arm will keep going that way, and nothing will be shot anywhere.
Well, they did show a real thing flinging the car, but it didn't stop abruptly. The effect was created from cable that holds the load slipping from the hook. Then the load flies off, because it is not attached anymore. The thing with Buster was that he flight from the basket too late. He got stuck against the railing, I think, and centrifugal force just held him in place.
If you put something on catapult arm, it might fly off even if you won't stop the arm abruptly. Simply because centrifugal force is a thing. The way load is going to stay is if there's something preventing it to slip in the direction of centrifugal force. Although that is exactly why catapults arm shaped as a spoon. What I meant to say is that Buster have had a good chance to fly off, but with the geometry of the basket they couldn't make him fly at the right moment, unless they, indeed, stopped the motion of the lift arm at the right place.
You should know about AC vs Windows down, at city speed and below and up to maybe 55 mph tops, windows down is cheaper on fuel without having so much impact on aerodynamics.
Above that, AC tends to be about the same and ends up being better in comparison (also windows down on the highway would drive me nuts)
😂 theyr tests have crytical flavs , and they even forget to put stop to boom , when boom reaches vertical
I just wish all the M5 ladies have stayed with adam, jamie, christine, and mythern jess as main and tori, kari/jessie, grant, scottie and as the build team. 8)
The Romans developed many Catapult type machines none of which needed a diesel engine,
The tosser....means something so different in the uk
I've driven 18 ton trucks that get more than 11.7 mpg
windows down at higher speed is unconfortable and loud. and mostgly you get a air trag at your head and neck and makes you sick.
And it would use more fuel, at lower speeds having the windows open is more fuel efficient, at higher speeds it is better to have the windows shut and the AC on.
39:32 John Wick.
RIP Grant... ;_;
Everything busters
scottie is so cool.......
Sweet
we don't see much of Karie or Grant in the earlier episodes
Grant wasn't hired yet when they had Scottie
Imagine Grant not showing up in the first two seasons!
even same model cars have different consumption. that test didn't actually prove anything.
What the hell is up with Jamie's stance in some scenes
no securety harnes and you can die if you fall fron 3 o 4 meters if you have bad LUCK
Scottie is best girl.
It's no myth to be more efficient with AC on, it's stupidity. More energy used = less mileage, just common sense.
Depends on speed, drag increase with the speed squared. low speed windows open, high speed windows closed.
catapult is not trebuchet ... sometimes you make yourselves look very ignorant ... old words are difficult for you? ...
No ones talking about how Grant is gone : (
This is before Grant joined the team.
scotty and scotties is correct ...
Carrie is so useless .
Seriously?
@@uriituw She is only good to but in Scottie showtime scenes . Because she is clearly useless . If you can't see that well I can't help you much more then that .....
fuck kari. that bitch also was filmed in a scammy commercial
It`s well known that AC increases ful consumption by a lot . at least 7%.
