Some of the subtle nuances that I love about this movie show that it's not actually Andy's redemption, but rather Red's. Andy was innocent and doesn't need redemption, but Red admitted his guilt, and lost hope in the process. Andy helped him to find that hope again, and embracing that hope was Red's redemption. The side-story with Brooks was there to provide contrast for Red. When Brooks left the prison, the camera faced inward, to reflect that he was leaving his home. He had no hope and it left him confused and afraid. When Red left the prison, the camera looked outward, so that we could see through Red everything ahead of him. This
Nice reaction to a very good film. Two things. 1. Somewhere on YT someone went to the 'Shawshank' tree and found that it (and the wall) are no longer there. The tree was hit by lightning (?) and eventually died. 2. There are literally 100's of movies that are very good to watch, review and enjoy. Please don't forget the great films from the 1940's, 1950's and 60's. Most reactors do... Take care and good luck with your channel.
It's cool that is was a real tree that lived as long as it did. You just know that if a movie with a tree like that were being made today they would simply CGI it rather than scout out and find a real tree like they had to back then.
Nice reaction! Couple things, the overhead shot of the prison is indeed beautiful and was done the old fashioned way, in a helicopter. There wouldn't have been any drones in 1993/1994. Stephen King is from the New England area and most of his stories take place in that area. For instance this story takes place in Portland, Maine not Oregon. Good luck with your channel!
Yeah, half of the “Shawshank Oak” fell due to a storm in late July 2011. The other half was damaged in another storm 7 years later. Due to the damage it sustained, it had to be removed.
You picked a great film to start with. The most amazing thing about this film is it wasn't really a box office success, but when it went to VHS Video rental the word got around and it became an utter cult classic watched by millions, it is one of the the greatest films of all time. Great reaction we could see you were genuinely moved by it. Incredible to think also that it was only a Steven King short story called Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption and became this epic film. A film of true hope conquers all, a beautiful ending on the beach after all they had been through with a glorious panoramic shot from above.
Another commenter pointed out what I, and probably 99.99% ppl miss, is the fact the that when Brooks leaves, the camera is outside of the prison, pointing in towards it. But when Red leaves, it points outward! What a great way to show “institutionalization “ compared to freedom!
This movie is a must see, as is The Green Mile. It stars Tom Hanks and was also written by Stephen King. Fun fact: When Andy escaped $370, 000 dollars in 1966 is equivalent to a bit over 3.6 Million in 2024. I also suggest the movie American History X
The tin container that Red finds under the tree has not been there for 30 years. The letter inside was addressed to Red and Andy only met him after he was sent to prison. Andy hadn't yet buried that container there when he told Red to look for it if he ever got out. Andy buried it there after he escaped, hoping Red would one day find it. He gave Red hope because hope is a great thing.
In the original novella, it WAS there for decades. The false identity was set up through Andy's friend (since deceased) outside the prison, protecting most of Andy's assets and money that he'd had before the murder. All the paperwork was hidden in a safety deposit box, and the key to it was hidden in the box in the field. Red mused how tough it must have been for Andy to wonder if the field had been torn up for a new building, or even if some kid found the rock and box and took it with him. But it all worked out. However, I like the film's version better--less unlikely coincidence and more karma for Norton.
Red's character in the Steven King novella was a red headed Irish man, hence... the Morgan Freeman line "maybe it's because I'm Irish" is a nod to that. Steven King lives in Bangor Maine.
@@GreatOutdoors1 I can only assume they wrote that in for the film when they cast Morgan Freeman, because in the novella his character doesn't have a name except for his nickname Red.
Other than this, my favorite Stephen King non horror movie is "Stand By Me", directed by Rob Reiner. Reiner also directed Kings' "Misery"". All are amazing and should be seen by movie lovers!
Congratulations on your new YT Reaction Channel and for finally watching The Shawshank Redemption (1994)! I am a fan of Addie's and saw you there so I joined your channel as well. Frank Darabont adapted 2 other Stephen King stories into movies, and they are also highly regarded: The Green Mile (1999) and The Mist (2007). Bring tissues for The Green Mile and expect a true horror style for The Mist. Don't look up anything else. Be surprised by the films and who is in them when you read the opening credits.
Check out The Godfather, Godfather 2, The Terminator, Terminator 2, Forest Gump, The Sixth Sense. Everybody reacts to these but there is a reason they do - they are each very good. The Terminator movies are full of laser guns, tracked war vehicles, and human skulls which obviously means these movies are chick flicks but guys like them too. Other worthy chick flicks are Casablanca, When Harry Met Sally, Roman Holiday, and a movie that hasn't gotten reacts - The Horse Whisperer. Other movies - The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Steel Magnolias, and Back to the Future. Each of these movies will blow you away with how good they are. Have fun!!!
This is the greatest film of all time, IMO. Im old enough that i was in college when this was released, and saw it at the theater and was simply never thr same. What storytelling. The script, the performances, the cinematography, the music, the directing, everything about this film is perfect. Hope you enjoy it.
My oh my, you really put yourself out there! There were no drones in the making of this movie, those were cranes used to take those shots; the Portland referenced here isn’t in Oregon but in Maine; glad you’re watching movies to learn about great actors, directors, keep it going
22:12 the funniest part is: he uses “obtuse” wrongly: it means to actively ignore information presented to you; you CAN’T be obtuse when the information is coming _from_ you; and the only way you would mix that up is if you don’t know what obtuse means, and you are only throwing Andy’s words back at him.
Loved your reaction. You have a new sub! Another king/Darabont collaboration is 'the Green Mile". If you haven't seen it, please consider reacting to it.👍👍
Great reaction Camilla like always, this is a masterpiece of cinema, A masterclass in pretty much every category. An incredible script, wonderful direction, gorgeous score and phenomenal performances by Freeman and Robbins. Some fun facts about this movie, Stephen King sold the rights for $1,000, The baseball throwing scene took 9 hours The scene where Andy and Red are standing and talking outside whilst Red is throwing a baseball back and forth took a staggering nine hours to film. Morgan Freeman threw the ball endlessly the whole time. The following day, when he arrived at work, his arm was in a sling. Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford were considered for Red, and Brad Pitt audition for the role of Tommy but he pulled out of the role because of another movie, later Brad Pitr said he regretted that decision. Red’s mugshot is Morgan Freeman’s son , When you see Morgan Freeman’s papers at one of his parole hearings, there are mugshots of a younger Red attached. These are actually photos of Alfonso Freeman - Morgan’s son. He also had a small part in the movie. He was one of the inmates shouting ‘Fresh fish!’ Stephen King’s novella was titled, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.’ This was shortened for the film because they didn’t want people to think it was a biopic about Rita Hayworth. This was proven to be true when several actresses applied for the ‘lead role of Rita Hayworth’. Keep up the amazing work.
The short story in "Different Seasons" by Stephen King is a good read along with the other 3 stories. The body was turned into a great movie as well called Stand by me.
I think Hadley crippled Boggs because he stopped Andy doing the finances on the inheritance he mentions during the roof tarring scene. That would have cost Hadley money to hire a lawyer / accountant on the outside.
This has my favorite use of subtle foreshadowing in a film. When Andy is telling Red about his plans to move to Mexico, Red tells him that he shouldn’t torture himself with his “shitty pipe dreams”. And then Andy crawls through a shit-filled pipe to fulfill his dream of escaping to Mexico.
2:12 As a kid I saw Morgan Freeman in _The Electric Company_ (1971-1977), so that’s *my* reference point. Here in Australia, we got both this show and _Sesame Street._
Fun fact: "Red" actually was Irish in the book. Morgan Freeman's line was an inside joke for people familiar with the source material. Stephen King doesn't only write horror, but he is most well known for his horror stories.
Hello Shawshank is one of my favorites here are some other movies you would like if you haven't seen them yet Mystic River: Tim Robbins , Sean Penn Dead Man Walking: Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon with Tim Robbins Producing and Directing Driving Miss Daisy: Morgan Freeman Million Dollar Baby: Hilary Swank, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman
So many hay fields in Buxton and everyone of them with rock walls. A monumental task to find the right one. Not sarcasm. Rock walls are everywhere up there, even through the forests.
bringing guns in the court as evidence is still very common today and gun safety check are terrifyingly bad. There was one prosecutor who didn't check the gun himself (Alway make sure the gun is unloaded; each person should check individually) Then pointed the gun at the jury. (never aim a gun at something you aren't willing to destroy) With the finger on the trigger. Breaking all three rules of gun safety.
This is in the top 10 of the best movies of all time of most critics and def of us, simpletons top 5 for sure. Nice to see a new reactor and someone who works in the movie biz is kinda cool too. Are you allowed to talk about the movies/shows you've worked in or not really, NDAs type of thing? Look forward to your reactions n I hope you haven't watched all or most at least, of my favorites 😁 The Green Mile is a great movie to watch, related to this, since it's set in a prison, of sorts n also Frank Darabont directed it n it's based on the novel by Stephen King as well. I'm positive you'll like it as much as this one maybe.
Also... Since you are in the film industry, you might be interested in some of the backstories. -- You see them sitting and talking so often bc Tim Robbins is so tall. -- The mug shot you see of Morgan Freeman is his son. There's a million of these. It's such a great film.
31:15 1994 saw _Forrest Gump, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show_ and _The Shawshank Redemption_ duke it out for Best Picture. Tough year.
Stephen King is a superior writer and is best known for his horror books that have been made into movies. However, he is also known for his brilliant dramatic and supernatural writings. A couple of his dramatic books that have been made into movies are (my favorites): Stand By Me, and the one that is a must-watch at least once in your life is The Green Mile.
Although Stephen King is mostly known as a horror writer, a substantial chunk of his work is not horror. The Green Mile is another Stephen King prison story, with a more supernatural twist, and is also directed by Frank Darabont. You should also check out Stand By Me, adapted from King's novella "The Body", which was originally published in the collection Different Seasons, which also included Shawshank. It's a coming of age story set in the 1950s with a spectacular soundtrack and a great, All-Star cast directed by Rob Reiner.
This is the second movie reaction that I have seen on your channel so far.. and I got to admit you're doing real good. The best thing to do is to show more emotion that will make your channel grow bigger and faster
If you are into films, I would highly recommend "Seven Samurai" by Akira Kurosawa. It has been VERY influential to films that came afterwards from Westerns to Star Wars.
And it and other Kurosawa films are not written in the traditional western 3 act structure but the traditional Japanese 4 act structure called Kishotenketsu.
They took the gun into the courtroom during the Rittenhouse trial a few years ago. Actually, the prosecuting attorney picked it up and pointed it at the jury, with his finger on the trigger! sounds insane but it actually happened
Portland, Maine. The story is written for Maine but the actual prison is in Ohio. I would follow up with the sixth sense and then go on to the Green Mile. Trust me you don’t want the green mile after his one. Not unless you have a mountain of tissues handy. In the book, Red is actually Irish. Actually not leave labor. For those who worked on the gangs it counted toward their good behavior time, this lessening their sentence. More like indentured servitude than slavery.
Hey Camilla! Just saw you on Addie's channel with The Hangover (hilarious reaction to that, lol). Definitely subbed to your channel after seeing your first reaction is to one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw this when I was 17 and absolutely fell in love with it. I even did Red's final monologue in my theater class, lol. Here's hoping you haven't seen my other three favorites, cause I'd love to see your reaction to those! (Heat, Gladiator, and Interstellar).
i like the shots, when brooks gets out the shot is from the outside looking into the prison, then red gets out, the shot is from the outside looking out. theres all kinds of interesting shots.
Great reaction...and quite a perfect start to your channel. Subbed! VFX artist here...nice to see a fellow industry peer doing well with reactions and appreciate your insightfulness and film commentary etc. 👏 Working on films, I usually watch movies fully aware of how the sausage is made. This film is definitely one of the ones i can successfully check my "making of" brain at the door and just enjoy (of course, i'll always have my own "someone's on the roof" moments too LOL). Fun fact...this is literally the first film Morgan Freeman did a voice over for, which is nuts. Dude nailed it out the gate...the rest is history.
You probably couldn’t have chosen a better movie to be your first reaction. A really really good drama with Tim Robbins is Arlington Road. He’s also in the first Top Gun, albeit in a small role. Another Steven King story movie is Stand By Me. It’s not horror either.
Decent reaction. Reactors must link the viewer to them and the movie through their reactions; wither they're verbal, physical or emotional. Sure there are many different kinds of viewers! Some live for jump scares (very large percentage), some live for 'shocking content reactions' (IE: watching your reactions to 'severe'/'excessive'/'etc.' scenes; lesser percentage), and a whole slew of others. Most of these noted are fleeting in nature as you should be able to tell and will definitely notice. Most of us viewers have seen these movies at least once! Some like me have seen them countless times. For me, my lifelong friend Roy The ToyBoy brought me to the theater to watch this movie! That in itself was unusual; but I'm thinking we went to Denny's afterwards and were talking about it, and again this was unusual. But we both pretty much loved the film. Except for this YT review I haven't seen it since then... Funny thing happened this weekend - @AddieCounts did a reaction to one of my favies! "Superman" (1978). I hadn't seen that movie since it came out and as I started playing her Patreon version I remembered exactly every single moment of the movie; what was coming next, etc.! LOL I did seen it in the theaters at least twice! I mean I grew up paying for the Superman comics, watching the 2nd TV series, and then 'boom' it came to theaters and that year I was 15. Christopher Reeve was the epitome of Superman! Anyway - there is yet another bunch - those of us whom love to see reactors at least enjoy the movie their reacting to and I’m of this bunch. You clearly liked it at the very least! Not to mention you wanted to learn more things about it. Thing is each and every movie is a universe unto itself! At least that’s how I’ve been treating them since the late 1960’s lol You noted you didn’t like ‘suicides’ or maybe ‘deaths’; sorry, but the Cinematic Universe is filled with them. There are movies that can change you, your views on a lot of things… Movies that will possibly make you physically sick. Sometimes its for ‘shock value’ and other times it is for various reasons. But this is your channel and if you want to stay in that stance, you can. YT editing can be a pain!!! I would recommend that if you run into some issues you can look at other Reactors YT Edits to get an idea! Thing is you want to draw us in via YT edits, showing us a little of the poignant moments (and here again is where looking at other reactors YT edits can help) where you are reacting to something and then draw us over to support. Try not to take ‘negativity’ too hard, ‘this is the internet’ and there are trolls all over the place. One thing no one else really touches upon - “Generational Gaps”; From “The Silent Generation” to “The Greatest/G.I. Generation, to Baby Boomers, GenX, etc. There are differences between them all, especially when you ‘jump’ generations. For instance - here in “The Shawshank Redemption” the story starts in the late 1940’s; those involved seem to be of “The Silent Generation.” With the members of this generation Religion was a big part of their life; I don’t remember the numbers but I would guess way more than 60% of American’s were religious at that point in time; it was engrained within American Society back then. Much more than ‘today.’ Of the generations I listed many, many things are very similar! How we grew up, what our parents taught us, what was socially acceptable, etc. Thee whole gambit of life. After that, things start to diverge significantly. You asked if this was a Christian Prison, but no - ‘technically it isn’t’ but it was “a given” [remember Algebra?] that ‘everyone was Christian’ or at least religious. I haven’t seen V FOR VENDETTA, so I’m skipping that and jumping to “The Danger Zone” lol OH! Good things! You didn't add in - any meme or gif, etc. of anything not connected to the movie! You were definitely 'into the movie' and that is clear as daylight for everyone to see! LOL YAY! You actually liked and definitely 'hated' to some degree the characters! Some of thee best movies will push you to the boundaries!!! Thee Greatest movies will push you through almost all emotions! Any 'great' movie does that doesn't it? Where you love characters soo much you'd like to hug them! Or characters you'd hate or have soo much disgust towards them soo much so all ya wanna do is to slap some sense into them!!! Or "Satisfying death" is a thing! I am totally embarrassed to say this but there is such a thing! It goes totally against what I was raised to believe, and everything else... But in this incredible Cinematic Universe there are "Satisfying deaths" - where the movie and everyone involved makes you utterly dislike the character soo much that when they finally pass... A feeling of at least "relief" washes over you! Very 'sick' but it's true! Thank you and 'your team' for sharing with us all!
Nice reaction. Steven king is known for horror but he has also written a number of dramatic novels. Another movie considered to be one of the greatest is “the green mile” and is also based on a Steven king novel. You should definitely check it out.
I would estimate well under half of King's stories are straight horror, but well over half use fantastical or science fiction elements, and almost all of them have some kind of dark themes even if they're grounded in reality.
First thing I have to say about your first video is this, you looked very very comfortable doing this. That's a great start! This is a great movie to start with as well. A lot of reaction fans will always check this out. I'm off to see your other movies now. Take care of yourself!
King doesn't only have horror in the catalogue. He's a horror author alright, but there's a fantasy sci-fi series I can barely remember called the Dark Tower or something. And another Sci-Fi thing that got turned into a TV show called Under the Dome. Another story a 'bit' like this that got turned into a movie called The Green Mile. Knowing that the guy has a crazy number of books, he probably has more non-horror books than most other authors have books in total. This was only a short story. The movie is a much more fleshed out story. A rare example of when the movie is more than the book. Shawshank got ROBBED for Best Picture. Forrest Gump is a wonderful movie. This is the best movie. I decided that year that the Oscars weren't worth a damn, even if they did give one to Unforgiven only two years before and Schindler's List won the year before.
Fun fact: Jake the crow, is a Corvid family member. They ARE the SMARTEST birds in Earth. The African Grey parrot is the most talkative bird on Earth. So, as I watched this in ‘97 (yeah, I was late to the party), I expected Jake to show up to the park.
Some other excellent top tier classic movies you could watch if you've not seen them. The princess bride Terminator 1 and 2 (We want your reaction to T2 but you need to watch T1 first) Airplane (1980) Apollo 13 Back to the future 1&2&3 Contact (1997) District 9 Ghostbuster 1&2 How to Train Your Dragon 1&2 Inception (2010) Independence Day Interstellar (2014) Jurassic park (1993) The Matrix (1999) The Never Ending Story The Martian The Rock Titanic Twister (1996) V for Vendetta (2005)
You picked the perfect movie for your first reaction. Glad to be here to support you. I first saw you on Addie Count's channel reacting to The Hangover. Keep up the yhe good work!
I read a lot of books from Steven King when I was younger, and this was my favorite story of his. It's part of a collection of novellas, with four novellas. I read this one over and over. You were asking, in the reaction, if the movie was different than the book. If the book was more of a horror story. The movie follows the novella exactly as I remember it. It is actually one of the movie adaptions of a book, that is most true to the original story, that I have ever seen. Another one of the novellas, from the same collection, was also made into a movie: Apt pupil. That movie is scary, without it being a horror movie.
Steven King has written a lot of horror, but some of his best stories have been in other genres. The movie "Stand by Me" is based on one of his stories, and it's not a horror film. That would be a good one to react to. I hope you're open to reacting to older movies. Some of the best and most iconic films were made during the golden age. Here are some suggestions. Every film on this list is well-known and well-loved by audiences and critics: 1930s M (1931) Duck Soup (1933) It Happened One Night (1934) Bringing Up Baby (1938) The Wizard of Oz (1939) 1940s Casablanca (1942) Citizen Kane (1941) Gaslight (1944) Laura (1944) It's a Wonderful Life (1946) The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) The Maltese Falcon (1941) 1950s All About Eve (1950) The African Queen (1951) Singin' in the Rain (1952) Roman Holiday (1953) Rear Window (1954) 12 Angry Men (1957) The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) Vertigo (1958) Some Like It Hot (1959) North by Northwest (1959) Anatomy of a Murder (1959) 1960s The Apartment (1960) Psycho (1960) Spartacus (1960) The Hustler (1960) The Manchurian Candidate (1962) Lawrence of Arabia (1962) Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) The Graduate (1967) Cool Hand Luke (1967) 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) The Lion in Winter (1968)
The Green Mile is another Steven King prison movie with Tom Hanks. Also, Back to the Future trilogy and possibly the Rocky Franchise. Welcome to the reaction family. I can’t wait to see more from you.
At the beginning of Different Seasons which contains the novella, Rita Hayworth and the ShawShank Redemption, Stephen King says the 2d most asked question he gets is, "Is horror all you write?". The 1st most asked question is," where do you get your ideas?"
Great reaction, your editing skills are top notch. It's hard ro do a major picture justice in 40 minutes, you did it in under 28. I look forward to seeing more of your reactions. Thank you!
Great reaction, subbed for more! If you haven't seen Hot Fuzz then I think you'd enjoy it, lots of fun and it's Edgar Wright so interesting cinematography and a tight script
Stephen King, while more well known for horror, wrote two famous prison novels and a spattering of more fantasy and/or mystery novels. He is also known for setting a large number of his stories in Maine. Some of his less or just non-horror novels that have been adapted other than this one include: The Dead Zone (which was more of a paranormal mystery and was adapted into both a movie and a television series) The Stand (which was more apocalypse and less traditional horror and was adapted into two mini-series) Firestarter (conspiracy and supernatural story which was adapted into two movies and one made for TV sequel) The Dark Tower series (which was an excellent fantasy series and was extremely poorly adapted into a single movie) The Green Mile (the other prison novel, which was also adapted into a movie) The Colorado Kid (a mystery story that was loosely adapted into a TV series called Haven) Under the Dome (a supernatural mystery story which was also adapted into a TV series) 11/22/63 (a time travel story which was adapted into a miniseries) There might be others that fit this category, but these are the only ones that I know enough about to confidently state are not really capital H horror novels. Edit: I forgot to add the movie that I had in mind when I first started writing the above list: Low Men in Yellow Coats (a fantasy/paranormal family drama which was adapted into a movie called Hearts in Atlantis starring Anthony Hopkins and the late Anton Yelchin)
Welcome to the reaction community, enjoyed your reaction and your comments, just one suggestion don't try to make predictions because in doing so you take the viewer out of the immersion of the movie and you, just a thought. Other than that welcome and I look forward to watching more:)
Just watched your Hungover reaction and you seem super smart. I love it! It shows here as well, but maybe the editing needs some adjustments. But I am sure you'll get there! 😊 Keep up the good work! 👍
This is such a stunning film. I remember the first time I watched it I was absolutely captivated by it. It is the best film I have ever seen. Amazing bit of trivia is that the original ending was when Red was on the bus. Thankfully they added the ending you now see.
@4:02 Absolutely yes... In fact a lawyer once accidently killed himself trying to prove that his client could have accident fired the gun... The client got off.
Good luck with the new channel from the land of Oppenheimer ( Cillian ). I was sitting on a bench in Dublin the best part of thirty years ago. Coffee in hand, I was looking down at the cobblestones when an old fashioned pair of boots came into view. Panning up, the rest of the person came into view, I could see that he was dressed as a pirate. And he was holding a coffee. He smiled at me - nice weather, he said. ‘Tis, said I - but it ‘Ill be raining soon enough. He laughed - yes, I’ve heard that about the Irish weather. Good day to you, Sir, he said, continuing on his travels. And with that, the man dressed as a pirate and holding a coffee made his way to a distant movie caravan, and as I watched Morgan Freeman depart, I could see that the man had that touch of stardust bequeathed to just a few.
If you're looking for ideas I'd encourage you to check out the AFI (American Film Institute) list from 1998 of the 100 best American films. It was released as a countdown clip show that aired on CBS. It's here on UA-cam. The list was revamped in 2007. There's also the original list of 400 nominations that AFI cut down to 100. Then they did comedy, musical, romance, thriller lists. It's all on wikipedia. Subbed. Oh, btw Shawshank was left off the '98 list but came in at #74 on the '07 list.
@@camillascornerwell done first reaction, I'm an old guy so I'll suggest a couple of older movies to react to (if you have seen them of course). Casablanca and Citizen Kane, have fun with your new reaction channel!
Really enjoyed your reaction and glad to see a new "reactionist" on the scene. I gauge channels on certain movies (this being one of them) like Monty Python & the Holy Grail, The Sixth Sense, Paranormal Activity, Spaceballs and a few others. I can usually gauge a reactor on these few movies and tell whether the will be worthy of my time. I look forward to seeing more of you. Good luck in your future endenvours!
Others may have noticed but if not I would be remiss if I did not say that your little plant on the window is worthy of a cinematic mention in terms of LEON by Luc Besson, I hope you get to the point to watch that film and realize your reactionary potential for your care of a potted plant that is the responsibility of Jean Reno, Natalie Portman and Gary Oldman. Films are great, welcome to them.
Stephen King HAS written a few things that aren't horror-based...including both this and The Green Mile (also directed by Frank Darabont). And King placed almost all of this stories in Maine/New England.
Portland Maine. King always uses Maine.
Warren Maine. Andy was a banker in Portland.
Not always. The Green Mile was set in Louisiana.
They moved "Stand by Me" from Maine to the west coast for the movie.
Misery was set in Colorado. Green Mile in Louisiana. The Shining in Colorado. Etc
4:59 Drones didn't exist back then, which makes it even more impressive. It's a helicopter shot.
great point, oh my gosh!

@@Psi105 I don't think an RC plane could lift a 35mm Ariflex.
You are all morons.
Take care and good luck with your channel.
thank you for being here!

Camilla!
A film of true hope conquers all, a beautiful ending on the beach after all they had been through with a glorious panoramic shot from above.
incorrect, she should have built up to it- Everything else will pale in comparison ❤
Yes indeed Jake and the short story was called "Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption". I remember reading the original story as a kid.
@@alk3094 Apparently Clint Eastwood was first offered the role to play Red; which he turned down (thank god).
The character's last name, at least in the movie, is also Redding.
@@GreatOutdoors1 I can only assume they wrote that in for the film when they cast Morgan Freeman, because in the novella his character doesn't have a name except for his nickname Red.
@@jakerobinson5978 Sounds plausible, I never read the novella.
Other than this, my favorite Stephen King non horror movie is "Stand By Me", directed by Rob Reiner. Reiner also directed Kings' "Misery"". All are amazing and should be seen by movie lovers!
I agree dedcowbowee.
Have fun!!!
Nice job, Ms Camilla. In the event it hasn't been pointed out earlier, note Andy's hammer was buried in the Book of Exodus (26:20).
This is the greatest film of all time, IMO. Im old enough that i was in college when this was released, and saw it at the theater and was simply never thr same. What storytelling. The script, the performances, the cinematography, the music, the directing, everything about this film is perfect.
Hope you enjoy it.
Clancy Brown voices Mr. Krabs on Sponge Bob. He’s one of my favorite character actors going all the way back to Highlander where he was the antagonist
My oh my, you really put yourself out there! There were no drones in the making of this movie, those were cranes used to take those shots; the Portland referenced here isn’t in Oregon but in Maine; glad you’re watching movies to learn about great actors, directors, keep it going
Note that Stephen King is from Maine, lives in Bangor, I believe.
Hi. I don't know if anyone told you, but you look a lot like my favorite actress, Lily Collins. Love it! 😍😍😍
Loved your reaction. You have a new sub! Another king/Darabont collaboration is 'the Green Mile". If you haven't seen it, please consider reacting to it.👍👍
For The Green Mile don't think of Stephen King as a horror writer, but as a writer of topics that are supernatural.
Definitely keep tissues nearby.
Great reaction Camilla like always, this is a masterpiece of cinema, A masterclass in pretty much every category. An incredible script, wonderful direction, gorgeous score and phenomenal performances by Freeman and Robbins. Some fun facts about this movie, Stephen King sold the rights for $1,000,
The baseball throwing scene took 9 hours The scene where Andy and Red are standing and talking outside whilst Red is throwing a baseball back and forth took a staggering nine hours to film.
He was one of the inmates shouting ‘Fresh fish!’
Stephen King’s novella was titled, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.’ This was shortened for the film because they didn’t want people to think it was a biopic about Rita Hayworth. This was proven to be true when several actresses applied for the ‘lead role of Rita Hayworth’. Keep up the amazing work.
The inmates didn’t mean for the new fish to get beaten. Once the guard took notice, even the con who won the bet was telling him to be quiet.
Thanks for clarifying numbnuts.
I took it as more, that Hadley had adopted Andy, as sort of a pet.
I'm glad you recognized that red had the more pronounced character arc, as the film is about HIS redemption.
The difference between Red and Brooks was that, even though Red had such a cynical view of hope, Andy gave him hope.
Remember Red’s gift from Andy? The harmonica? Did you notice the sound of a harmonica when Red is moving along that rock wall towards the tree?
2:12 As a kid I saw Morgan Freeman in _The Electric Company_ (1971-1977), so that’s *my* reference point. Here in Australia, we got both this show and _Sesame Street._
Fun fact: "Red" actually was Irish in the book. Morgan Freeman's line was an inside joke for people familiar with the source material.
Stephen King doesn't only write horror, but he is most well known for his horror stories.
Hello
Shawshank is one of my favorites
here are some other movies you would like if you haven't seen them yet
Mystic River: Tim Robbins , Sean Penn
Dead Man Walking: Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon with Tim Robbins Producing and Directing
Driving Miss Daisy: Morgan Freeman
Million Dollar Baby: Hilary Swank, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman
Ste0hen King (the horror fiction writer) lived in Maine when he wrote this story. The setting is near Portland, Maine.
So many hay fields in Buxton and everyone of them with rock walls. A monumental task to find the right one. Not sarcasm. Rock walls are everywhere up there, even through the forests.
If you're interested, the Rita Hayworth movie they were watching is "Gilda".
Great movie!
bringing guns in the court as evidence is still very common today and gun safety check are terrifyingly bad.
There was one prosecutor who didn't check the gun himself (Alway make sure the gun is unloaded; each person should check individually)
Then pointed the gun at the jury. (never aim a gun at something you aren't willing to destroy)
With the finger on the trigger.
Look forward to your reactions n I hope you haven't watched all or most at least, of my favorites 😁
The Green Mile is a great movie to watch, related to this, since it's set in a prison, of sorts n also Frank Darabont directed it n it's based on the novel by Stephen King as well. I'm positive you'll like it as much as this one maybe.
It was this movie that made Morgan Freeman a master narrator. It was March of the Penguins that made him the voice of god.
Remember when Red told Andy his dream of going to the Pacific was a “$hit*y pipe dream?” Now remember what Andy crawled through to realize his dream.
When the warden opened the bible revealing the outline of the rock hammer, it opened to the Book of Exodus. Small detail, but a good one.
Came cause of Addie starting off strong love to see it
This is the second movie reaction that I have seen on your channel so far.. and I got to admit you're doing real good. The best thing to do is to show more emotion that will make your channel grow bigger and faster
No, be authentic please.
@JasonTerminator2 ... Yes be authentic but if you're going to cry cry don't hold back just to make yourself look good
If you are into films, I would highly recommend "Seven Samurai" by Akira Kurosawa. It has been VERY influential to films that came afterwards from Westerns to Star Wars.
And it and other Kurosawa films are not written in the traditional western 3 act structure but the traditional Japanese 4 act structure called Kishotenketsu.
Came over from Addie's channel, i think i'm in love with those eyebrows, new sub right here
They took the gun into the courtroom during the Rittenhouse trial a few years ago.
Fun Fact: Clancy Brown who played Hadley the prison guard is also the voice of Mr Krabs in Spongebob
They don’t make these movies anymore. I enjoyed your reaction.
Stephen King also wrote one of the big 80s classics Stand By Me which is not a horror movie.
They do a second mirror when they are talking about wanting to go back. Brooks says “ so they’ll send me home” and red says “so they’ll send me back”.
You picked a doozy to start with madam. It consistently rates No. 1 on IMDb’s Top 250. I think it’s a beautiful film.
Yes indeed Purusha, she picked a "doozy" for her first reaction.
Watching Shawshank, got cats, and embarrassed you haven't seen the Godfather yet. Yes, I feel right at home :)
Im an instant fan! Cant wait to follow you on your movie journey. You will be getting MORE fans real fast ❤
Possibly! But what I said was fact! What you said is conjector! Realize the difference?

It's based on a Stephen King novel, his non-horror novels are so good, e.g. The Green Mile is another really good novel by him.
Your first instinct regressing Tommy was correct. In the book they moved Tommy to a minimum security prison near his family to buy his silence
Love that film. Great reaction too.
@14.38 very good prediction about the wardens shady dealings 😊😊😊😊😊 good reaction to a classic movie
Morgan Freeman has been in so many movies, but IMO one of his best roles was in Driving Mrs. Daisy. Its a movie that takes place over several decades.
Steven King has written a lot of horror, but some of his best stories have been in other genres. The movie "Stand by Me" is based on one of his stories, and it's not a horror film. That would be a good one to react to.

Thank you!
Welcome and congrats on your first reaction. Lookin forward to see more of you . This is actually my favorite movie of all time on all genre
this is my favorite movie of all time
Great reaction, subbed for more! If you haven't seen Hot Fuzz then I think you'd enjoy it, lots of fun and it's Edgar Wright so interesting cinematography and a tight script
Great pick for a first reaction video. I've been down the rabbit hole of watching random reaction channels for this, Terminator 2, and Fight Club.
Stephen King, while more well known for horror, wrote two famous prison novels and a spattering of more fantasy and/or mystery novels. He is also known for setting a large number of his stories in Maine.
Some of his less or just non-horror novels that have been adapted other than this one include:
The Dead Zone (which was more of a paranormal mystery and was adapted into both a movie and a television series)
The Stand (which was more apocalypse and less traditional horror and was adapted into two mini-series)
Firestarter (conspiracy and supernatural story which was adapted into two movies and one made for TV sequel)
The Dark Tower series (which was an excellent fantasy series and was extremely poorly adapted into a single movie)
The Green Mile (the other prison novel, which was also adapted into a movie)
The Colorado Kid (a mystery story that was loosely adapted into a TV series called Haven)
Under the Dome (a supernatural mystery story which was also adapted into a TV series)
11/22/63 (a time travel story which was adapted into a miniseries)
There might be others that fit this category, but these are the only ones that I know enough about to confidently state are not really capital H horror novels.
Edit: I forgot to add the movie that I had in mind when I first started writing the above list: Low Men in Yellow Coats (a fantasy/paranormal family drama which was adapted into a movie called Hearts in Atlantis starring Anthony Hopkins and the late Anton Yelchin)
Such a great video! I can’t wait to see what you watch next! 💕
hehe thank you friend!!!
Hey Addie! Love you both! :D
I love Addie's channel!
Welcome to the reaction community, enjoyed your reaction and your comments, just one suggestion don't try to make predictions because in doing so you take the viewer out of the immersion of the movie and you, just a thought. Other than that welcome and I look forward to watching more:)
Other films I would recommend: The Others, The Abyss, Ladyhawke 1985.
21:26 “… send him somewhere else” is one way to put it.
Just watched your Hungover reaction and you seem super smart. I love it! It shows here as well, but maybe the editing needs some adjustments. But I am sure you'll get there! 😊
Keep up the good work!
In the book Red was in fact from Ireland and he had red hair.
No drones 30 years ago. I imagine Deakins was up in a helicopter for those early shots.
oh my gosh, so true...!
Again, impeccable vibes! Thank you for the content, it is very much appreciated! ✌️💚
Subbed. Oh, btw Shawshank was left off the '98 list but came in at #74 on the '07 list.
oh I've heard of that - I'll absolutely check it out, thank you!
$35k in inheritance back then was equivalent to nearly $200k today.
The money he took from the warden would have been the equivalent to over 2mil.
When Red tells Andy that going to Mexico is “shitty pipe dreams“, it foreshadows Andy crawling through a pipe of shit to escape.
Great reaction - I honestly enjoyed watching and listening to it the entire way 🙂 I have also subscribed, since I reward great work ma'am.
