  • Do you wish your solo improvisations were more melodic? Have you ever been told to use more space in your solos? Do you ever wonder why the rhythm section doesn't interact with you that often? In this video, I discuss in detail the 2 keys to making your solos more melodic and interesting - the use of phrasing and space. Hey Tito it's Vic Jr. I can't believe that I just ran into this on UA-cam. I've been teaching myself how to play trumpet. The piano has been my teacher but Miles was always my best friend. Been struggling but I've got to that point where it gets hard to do anything else that's not music. Just a place to be in Hermit Mode. Couldn't have asked for a better guide through these times. As always thank you Tito!!!

    I'm really enjoying your videos Tito. It's filling in a big, trumpet-shaped UA-cam hole for me. Thank you for doing this.

    I just came across your performance of 'Soul Eyes’ at the 2019 U of I Faculty Recital. OUTSTANDING example of space and phrasing in your solo, I closed my eyes & it was as if Dr. Eddie Henderson was playing flugelhorn. Masterful job, Professor!! 🎺

    Ok now I can’t wait to go practice! You’re stretching me, Tito! How will I develop the patience to pace myself as I learn these new concepts!?? It’s the long game of mastery I know…lifetime challenge….this is such amazing advice!

    Hey Tito ! Thanks for this very clear and so very useful video. I have a question though : Could you clarified for me what "pick ups" are vs phrase ?

    • @jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605
      @jazzmindwithtitocarrillo605  Рік тому +1

      Thank you Yveline! The pick-up notes are when the soloist attacks the new section of the form, but actually anticipates that section by a few beats or a measure. The form phrasing approach still remains, but they start the new phrase a little before the downbeat of the new section. Hope this helps!

      I would recommend trying to play the chromatic scale from c to c until it feels easy

    Hey I love your stuff and it really has helped me. My problem is I have memorized all 12 majors and 12 minors but I do not know how to really practice them other than going up and down and maybe some thirds. What book can I get or what exercises do you recommend to get scales into the sub conscious mind like you said.

      Hey Tyson, you don’t need books, per se. I encourage you to now go directly to tunes and apply your theory directly to creating ideas over compositions. Learn each of the tunes on the Aebersold Vol 54 Maiden Voyage collection one by one. Internalize the heads, and start with chord tones over each chord, eventually expanding to scales. And get away from the written page as soon as you can when learning these tunes.

    Sorry Tito but I had stop the video and listen to Freddie. I listen to Tidal mostly these days but I looked on the shelf and I have the CD and judging by the price tag I bought it 20 years ago. Shame on me but wasn’t familiar with it- but I have most of his records. On vinyl I have The Hub of Hubbard with his insane solo on Just One of Those Things! I recently saw an interview with him (and other trumpet players) on UA-cam discussing embouchures. I am paraphrasing but if I understood him correctly he said Louis Armstrong couldn’t have got the sound he had with a legit embouchure. Again me using the word legit, he might not have used the word, taking it to be like Alison Balsam, a classical music virtuoso player, would have for example. What do you think?
