It honestly feels crazy that there used to be champions that Riot would just nerf until they were completely unplayable and keep them there for years on end until they could rework them. We’ve had balancing hiccups since then but never of that magnitude
i still think the poppy rework is arguably the best rework they've ever made to a champion, how ever it definitely had issues a long the way, which to be fair they did fix. Like her tab ultimate used to make the knocked up target untargetable as well, so often you could end up screwing over your own team. Her W was great, but the mobility creep really kicked in as well, where blocking 1 dash didn't matter when said champion had 2 more anyway, this was thankfully fixed with adding grounding to the ability.
@vars i would love to see you cover Soraka's rework. I feel like she has had 2 completely different lives in the history of league. Her original abilities put her in battle mage territory. For those who didn't know about old star call, easily the most devastating ability in the entire game! I think she's worth covering because her contrast from then to now is night and day. I don't know if they improved her as much as they changed her identity entirely to make her less powerful.
I'll always remember that a rioter said this about old poppy "if anyone figures out how to play her and she becomes a common pick we'll have to nerf her so much no one ever picks her again."
I love the invisible pressure coming from Poppy. The Irelia or Akali cant play while Poppys W is on cooldown, so you carry by just standing there. Very fun.
Only thing I miss from old Poppy era was the reduced DPS across the board. Current league with all it's tons of damage, often to the point one CC = one death, is playable but not as enjoyable as those old times when you could get away from tight situations with any character provided you had the mechanics, not only those with massive life steal/shield proc. BTW, new ult is the concept as old ult, just that now you gotta throw away those you don't wanna fight.
I’m pretty much of the opinion that poppy’s rework was for the best even as someone who did play old poppy. Her old kit was almost a coinflip between surviving till late and becoming a monster to just being a minion and the game ending early. She especially became worse over time as more top laners became specialized in early game dominance (Darius especially was such an unfun matchup experience). She wouldn’t even survive this day and age since her passive was countered by true damage (which everyone had a lot of these days). Her rework completely changed her role in the game, but it also made her identity clear and still preserved some of the experience playing her without it being so polarizing. I still love playing her current iteration even in spite of the fact that she’s a skill expressive tank competing against ult bots and mechanically simple champs that can do her job more consistently.
Old Poppy was my main for a few months before her rework. My favorite moment with her was soon after Sion's rework. Sion ulted past me into my team. I ulted him, ran in and got a Quadra for free, then ran back and picked up my Penta because somehow Sion was still alive and terrorizing my team. Poor enemy team literally just died because she was so rare they had no idea what my Champ did lol.
What would have made her old ultimate interesting. Is if it worked both ways. Poppy would be immune to everyone but the marked enemy. But she couldn't attack or target anyone but the marked enemy as well Basically a light version of Mordekiaser's ult
The thing about her Q was that it converted all the physical damage of the attack into magic damage that also had % damage built into it. Meaning itemizing against her was a nightmare. She could build full AD and hit like a full AP mage with just her Q.

I think if you stuck old poppy in the game now she wouldn’t feel op or annoying in many, if any, ways. Another note I think gets overlooked is the whole “skill expression” argument that people use to say old champs were boring. I think if you asked most people that played back in Season 3 they would say the game was more fun. “Skill expression” is kind of a bullshit term that really describes cheesy or broken abilities. Lee Sin was always so broken because he had so much “skill expression” but really he just could catch anyone and escape from anyone because he had so much mobility and so many tools to use that other champs didn’t. I think if you really look honestly at the abilities or champs that people consider “skill expressive” you will find a common thread. They just beat you unless you make a good 50/50 guess or have flash/some other safety tool to escape. Talon one-shotting the ADC doesn’t really take much skill, he just hovers his cursor over the enemy and mashed his keyboard, if they have flash they might live, if they don’t they are dead. Talon didn’t have to do anything special to kill the adc, he just used his abilities. Many champs have this same interaction and yet people call it skill. The skill in league used to be positioning, timing, and macro. Those still matter in the grand scheme of things, but matter much less on moment to moment play. Nowadays everyone just smashes their keyboard and people die immediately. If you have flash and/or zhonyas/stopwatch you can “outplay” others, otherwise you don’t in many scenarios and it’s about who pressed their buttons first or who is the more “skill expressive” champion.
Old Talon is definitely stupid IMO, since the only skill you need is how to auto-attack cancel in 0.25 seconds. Once you mastered that, you just murder anyone watching you.
very well said. i also think the old game had way more skill expression. this got moved into giga buff abilities that anyone can use quite easily. nowadays Lee Sin is outdated bcs of it. the game lost a lot of integrity.
As a Poppy/Kindred jungle main I can confirm she doesn't feel like a typical warden to play at all, it may be due to my playstyle but I find the most effective use of her ult is to secure objectives and chain cc, not as a get off me and the most effective use of her w is to e stun someone and then activate it to disrupt the enemy team. Also killing someone by e-ing a minion to proc sunderer and using that with her passive and dark harvest to kill someone under a turret is very satisfying. Not as satisfying as ulting someone out from under their turret but I don't get that opportunity as much as a jungler.
Something that's incredible to me is how good yet balanced she has been over the years. She had a double digit pick/ban rate in five of the seven world championships since her rework, and apart from the 2016 one where she was a bit overtuned, she was between 15% and 25% in those tournaments. Never a dominant player in draft, but someone many teams saw the value in being able to pull out, who believed she could consistently do something, without her being a broken must-play. Considering literally every worlds in that time has had a champ with 89.5%-100% pick/ban, if not two, that's impressive.
Old Poppy main here and also now a new Poppy main. I've played her since the beta and mained her on and off since the rework. While i love her playstyle now, i would be lying if i said i don't miss dodge chance crit Poppy. And yes dodge chance was a stat in the game a long time ago.
I picked up Poppy a week before they announced she was being completely reworked. While I was disappointed, it was completely understandable. Playing pin the ult on the support was such a fun minigame but everything else completely lack luster. What was great about the rework as someone who played a lot of Poppy right before the new Poppy is that it still felt like the same character but in a healthier playstyle.
I have been looking forward to this for so long. As someone who started in 2019 amd who's favorite champ is poppy, hearing you and other players talk about her like a monster always interested me. Thank you for the full rundown
I really liked the old Q on Poppy. It was so simple and so busted. I think she was able to Q a Chogath for 1,5k damage. If she had the same Q today you could play her lethality and actually one-shot people (not the one-shot most youtubers claim in their titles).
As a Poppy Main, I am so happy Riot gave her an awesome W to stop the hundreds of dashes in the game with a 27 cooldown while every dash has like a 5 second cooldown. THANKS RIOT!
I just want to add as someone who played a lot of old Poppy her passive went off of CURRENT health so it only got stronger the lower you got. Your examples really undersell it imo. It wasn't uncommon to get autod for less than 100 by the enemy adc in the late game if you went tank poppy. And early game when damage numbers were lower you could stay in lane super long at sub ~30% hp just because of how tanky you got. That being said it was never free. The rest of her basic abilities were so bad at low level it didn't matter. The was a very common unofficial title for her at the time. Poppy, the worst farmer. Due to her needing to farm to late game but having basically 0 tools to help her do it.
I used to play poppy quite a bit before the rework and the only problems I have with the new poppy is how "weird" the q is to use and that she completly lost the ability to flex into ap/ad/bruiser/tank/crit depending on the needs of the game. She used to be just like shyvana in a sense that you could build pretty much whatever on her and it would work if it was suited for the ongoing game
Poppy is my otp. Started in s8. Really enjoy her playstyle. I wish I could find another champ I enjoy as much as her. Her personality, anti carry kit and mind games with her passive and W are so fun for me. I play her mostly top and support but shes playable jg and mid too. Full tank always since Q does enough damage.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I used to main Poppy (amongst other champs) in late 2014/early 2015. I loved her back then, and I love playing her post-rework as well. This was a great trip down memory lane.
Diplomatic Immunity (R) could have been easily fixed by making it so she can only take AND deal dmg to the target affected. they could have made that change and then buff her laning phase.
I just want to clarify that at one point triforce also used to give AP, so it wasn't strictly an ad item (though it was primarily one and did give ad and crit)
DFG poppy was still insanely fun though. 40% damage amp from your ult and 15% from DFG led to some really wack gameplay where you just waddled up to an adc you ulted and bonked them for like 90% of their hp.
Such a unique and interesting concept for her persona as well-- a humble soldier who doesn't realize that she is, in fact, the hero she is destined to serve.
11:48 the best way to use the ult in a team fight is to get 1 or 2 enemies out of it allowing ur team to collapse on the enemy with a numbers advantage.
I loved old Poppy's kit. It was super broken but it was really fun once you got going. You were super tanky and your passive guaranteed you couldn't be one shot so you could afford to build pure damage. You could help your early game a lot by starting Doran's ring instead of the flask, shield or blade. Doran's ring allowed you to last hit and get mana back that way. You had ap scalings so it wasn't the worst. At level 3 you had a decent skirmish with this. Stun, auto, Q reset auto, then run away.
If I'm not wrong, the old voli E dealt extra damage if used on a champion while dashing, usually used in combo with is Q, similar to talya and her combo
As someone who played a lot of pre rework Poppy, she was a blast once you got through that horrible early game. Her passive made her difficult to burst down even if you didn't build her defensively, her Q had really good scaling, and her ulti was situationally broken. Despite saying all that, I didn't main Poppy before the rework, and now I do. So clearly she's in a better spot.
I remember the bad laning phase of old poppy. I switched to jungle with her, which wasn't optimal but atleast you had a better chance to get some items and start stomping the squishies :) I miss her :(
i did play old poppy before the rework.. and they changed the E so little.. but it hit in a big way. i don't even know what they did. maybe they increased both the dash and push ranged by 50 each.. or even the speed.. but it meant that poppy could actually reliably stun. the amount of times i would just push people next to a wall instead of into it, on old poppy.. also the ult, i feel still has the spirit of the old ult. it can still be used to create the 1v1 scenario, but in a much more fun and animated way
Sure would be nice if Steadfast Presence prevented dashes, flashes and escaping altogether, like she uses the active and enemies can't walk towards Poppy if outside the circle or away if they are inside. Increase its cooldown and/or reduce its duration but it would be better that way.
As a Poppy player since open Beta you forgot that old Poppy's Heroic Charge (E) can stun also opponent when they hit their creeps or fellow champions, new Poppy's Heroic Charge is now mostly terrain reliant to stun. New Poppy's Q is an improvement from her old Q so you could farm but it's fringing too short range even Yasuo's Q out ranges it. She still suffers from high mana costs and long skill cooldowns.
I agree with the mana cost but disagree with the cooldown. Q at max rank has 4 sec cd and with the haste she gets with items 3 - 3.5. E cd is fine and ult needs a long cd to be fair. Only the W could use a bit less maybe
I too was one of the 5 players that really liked old poppy. Thing with her passive is that the lower health you were, the more dmg it blocked. Combine that with some health regen and you had a 3 round jungle trip without backing because you just stopped taking dmg. This also helped mitigate the weaker early, as invading a poppy was quite risky with all the walls to heroic charge you into. Building here CDR was my favourite, just whack you for ~12% of your max health every 2 seconds. You had about 10 seconds to live when fighting her, of which you spend about 3 stunned by chaining her charge well. doesnt matter how much health you had. BUT I absolutely adore the rework, so much more personality in her, and in her playstyle as well. Very very happy with it and still a pick when i dont feel like thinking but just go time.
The old Poppy Ult is the perfect example of: "I don't care what its designed to do, i care about what it CAN do" Knowing that Poppy hitting 6 meant tower dives or your carry dying next team fight was a whimsical time.
Former Poppy main, checking in. My friends would call me Rambo Poppy because of how well she could tower dive and somehow survive 😂 Great breakdown of what made her so low key terrifying 🙏
used to play a ton of poppy in season 3 because i bought a skin for her as a meme and it turned out her q 1 shotting people with lichbane, deathfiregrasp, and gunblade for the big bop heals and the active dmg/slow was just a bunch of fun. laning was garbo with it, but you could go top and just sandbag under tower for 15minutes and roam around. the one i spammed the most was jungle rushing tiamat into trinity force and just go full ad, actually insane damage, and spamming bot worked quite well because people kept hiding in bushes so i couldnt dash but warding into an E was just free kills.
Used to play her botlane with a friend playing blitzcrank, didnt know that you were suppised to play adc bot. It worked really well though. Played her full crit with 2-3 Phantom dancers (if i sold boots), 2 bloodthirsters and 1 infinity edge. To me, that was the funnest champion to play.
Sion and Urgot were worse. At the very least, Poppy kit was coherent. Meanwhile, Sion played with 2 spells (Q and W if AP, R and E if AD) and Urgot could not decide whether or not he wanted to be an artillery, or go in the middle of the melee.
Old Poppy Q actually converted the entire attacks damage to Magic, so TriForce procs from Q would do magic damage on her, it also made her generally difficult to tank.
I unironically miss old Poppy just from how JANK she is. You run into a Teamfight, Ult the Support, and just wack everyone in sight, and nobody else could do anything
Honestly, I love the idea of Diplomatic Immunity. I just wish it was implemented better. If they wanted to bring it back they’d just need to make both players immune to both teams, and unable to effect both teams. Basically Mord ult but you’re still visible and there’s no arena.
I haven't played Poppy in a while, but playing her as a jungler was genuinely some of the most fun I've had in League. I adore Poppy and her rework so much
I really like her rework. Old poppy was completely unreasonable, but they still managed to carry over a lot from that old kit. I think shes much more fair and interesting now, and it feels kind of fitting that she still has a low playrate. But when you run into a good poppy, good luck
I'll come out of my hiding hold as an old Poppy main. Her mana costs were the only real way that Riot could actually keep her in line. It's why Riot took both Poppy, Yorick, and Urgot out of the free rotation, and said that if anyone found a way to get good with Poppy, they would immediately nerf her. With Mana Potion and Crystalline Flask's removals, it was only a matter of time before Poppy got reworked. She was either completely unfair/broken to play against if she got ahead, or she was a dead weight that was dragging your team down if she fell behind. Her rework did make her much more tolerable and less degenerate, but, I do miss the days of ulting the Support and diving the rest of the opposing team.
You didn't show that clip of Hauntzer stunlocking Balls from S6? (I think it was Balls? Poppy vs. Fiora in like the first TSM game of LCS Spring 2016.) Bit of a shame I really stopped playing League before her re-work kicked in. I think I would've really liked her.
I started league when poppy got reworked so I never got to experience her old gameplay. But since I first played poppy has been my main. A champion so simple but with so much potential
Old Poppy was how I learned to carry from jg lane .stopped playing after rework. Ult really wasn't unfair her burst was. Burst was assassin like on adc but she was nothing when everything was on cool down.
i hope you make a video about old champs who's still feel fine to play in current days, as if it was made in these days, champs like riven sivir yasuo etc
Poppys old "R" was unique AND had the perfect name for it... and was perfect for her old role as "iron ambassador"... RIP... but to be fair: her new R is one of the most funny and unique R again... so... :)
I loved old Poppy. Played a lot, and her early game although not outstanding, was not that abysmal. It's more of perception rather than matter of fact. W start was totally fine since minion attacks stacked her resistances giving her a bit of an advantage in AA war. Also she spiked like crazy with just Trinity Force, way before late game
One important thing to remember is that Poppy is also one of the best *characters* in League. She's right up there with Jhin and Kindred in character design
Poppy's new look really got me to play her, despite me only playing support at the time I one-tricked her for like 2 years and oh boy I had the greatest time I could in this game
I'd argue that being able to stop multiple dashes at once is more disruptive than the actual dash. W is not meant to stop all dashes all the time, but to stop a dash champ at the right moment to put them in a bad spot. If you stop Akali E/R, Lee Sin E, Kha E or any other escape/engage dash, you can chain-cc with R and they probably just die if you have teammates.
I was a old Poppy main, it was soooo fun to play her once you get to know her. But yeah, she wasn't fair at all.

I love in Poppy that every ability can be used in two ways, like no other champion
Lee sin in question:
@@thenumber24 only his r tho
Lulu?
@@michaelmurphy275 yeah Lulu is the big other example
Draven at 7:49 saying "She's my sex slave", being brazilian sometimes leads to funny moments like this
Something that's incredible to me is how good yet balanced she has been over the years.
The rework videos are effectively a list of my mains before they got changed
Same. I loved old Urgot. I loved old Poppy. I also liked old Swain... I really miss them.
@@Kuraikari I mained old eve… she was squishy AF but she had the highest damage on the game if you got in range
Old Poppy main here and also now a new Poppy main. I've played her since the beta and mained her on and off since the rework. While i love her playstyle now, i would be lying if i said i don't miss dodge chance crit Poppy. And yes dodge chance was a stat in the game a long time ago.
But I also can admit old poppy was a toxic nightmare in the game lol
Old poppy: let's chase the ADC 🙃🙃
I just wish they made steadfast presence last a bit longer cause you really only ever catch 1 dash and then they just run away most of the time
As a Poppy Main, I am so happy Riot gave her an awesome W to stop the hundreds of dashes in the game with a 27 cooldown while every dash has like a 5 second cooldown. THANKS RIOT!
Love Poppy, I've only ever seen the reworked version but she can be so much fun. She is the hero of YEET.
Poppy went from "nightmare" to "so adorable i hesitate to ult her"
I used to play poppy quite a bit before the rework and the only problems I have with the new poppy is how "weird" the q is to use and that she completly lost the ability to flex into ap/ad/bruiser/tank/crit depending on the needs of the game. She used to be just like shyvana in a sense that you could build pretty much whatever on her and it would work if it was suited for the ongoing game
yeah that may be cool but also unhealthy like kat for example :D
It was more of an hybrid item
It was an everything item. Health, dodge, ap, ad, crit, attack speed, movespeed, mana, on hit....and I still feel like I'm forgetting something 😆
DFG poppy was still insanely fun though. 40% damage amp from your ult and 15% from DFG led to some really wack gameplay where you just waddled up to an adc you ulted and bonked them for like 90% of their hp.
Such a unique and interesting concept for her persona as well-- a humble soldier who doesn't realize that she is, in fact, the hero she is destined to serve.
poppy's rework was very needed and well executed but i'll never forget the oneshot combo with deathfire grasp + E + Q
11:48 the best way to use the ult in a team fight is to get 1 or 2 enemies out of it allowing ur team to collapse on the enemy with a numbers advantage.
Nah Poppy was The Greatest. Twisted Treeline with a friend on Tryndamere and another homie slappin with Kayle! Good times😊
Would love to see a video about Ryze!
I wish I would have taken advantage and played old poppy back in it's day. I was too busy being disgusted by her splash arts.
I switched to jungle with her, which wasn't optimal but atleast you had a better chance to get some items and start stomping the squishies :) I miss her :(
Oh my gosh! I never realized how disfigured old Nunu looked. Wtf was up with his neck and arms? Little guy looks like E.T.
I remember playing pre-rework full AP poppy. You would ult the ADC and one shot it and the enemy team can’t do anything about it
i did play old poppy before the rework.. and they changed the E so little.. but it hit in a big way. i don't even know what they did. maybe they increased both the dash and push ranged by 50 each.. or even the speed.. but it meant that poppy could actually reliably stun. the amount of times i would just push people next to a wall instead of into it, on old poppy..
also the ult, i feel still has the spirit of the old ult. it can still be used to create the 1v1 scenario, but in a much more fun and animated way
Sure would be nice if Steadfast Presence prevented dashes, flashes and escaping altogether, like she uses the active and enemies can't walk towards Poppy if outside the circle or away if they are inside. Increase its cooldown and/or reduce its duration but it would be better that way.

Darius: "poppy defends draven very well "
Draven: "she is my s*x slave"
gosh i love brazilians
The biggest thing is that she has the best bark by far now. Nothing like watching an enemy try to do pretty well anything and she just says "Nope"
Season 4, season 5 Poppy jungle was my JAMMMMM
BUT
I absolutely adore the rework, so much more personality in her, and in her playstyle as well. Very very happy with it and still a pick when i dont feel like thinking but just go time.
I may be remembering wrong but I used to use old poppy ult on a minion then no one could do dmg to you besides that minion. Made for great team fights
The old Poppy Ult is the perfect example of: "I don't care what its designed to do, i care about what it CAN do"
Knowing that Poppy hitting 6 meant tower dives or your carry dying next team fight was a whimsical time.
I mained old poppy. Diplomatic immunity was a treat to play. But with being weak early. You would double philostone or Heart of Gold and a Philostone.
As a used to be poppy main i gotta day still loved to play her even when she wasn't meta until i retired in season 10
VIDEO ON THE BEST GIRL, YAY.
Sion and Urgot were worse.
At the very least, Poppy kit was coherent. Meanwhile, Sion played with 2 spells (Q and W if AP, R and E if AD) and Urgot could not decide whether or not he wanted to be an artillery, or go in the middle of the melee.
Funnily enough I used to like and play the old poppy and found her really fun especially the old ult, never played her again after the rework
Why not give it a try
I at least really enjoy playing her
Old Poppy Q actually converted the entire attacks damage to Magic, so TriForce procs from Q would do magic damage on her, it also made her generally difficult to tank.
Basically Mord ult but you’re still visible and there’s no arena.
there isnt really a reason to bring it back when morde ult exists, thinking abt it mord ult is pretty much just the same thing.
I haven't played Poppy in a while, but playing her as a jungler was genuinely some of the most fun I've had in League. I adore Poppy and her rework so much
funniest thing about old poppy was her e being able to move baron around the map... i miss old league...
I really like her rework. Old poppy was completely unreasonable, but they still managed to carry over a lot from that old kit. I think shes much more fair and interesting now, and it feels kind of fitting that she still has a low playrate. But when you run into a good poppy, good luck
0:15 jesus christ, what was that Nunu’s model. Nightmare fuel
how riot restored a bit of humanity :
Poppy vs. Fiora in like the first TSM game of LCS Spring 2016.)
Bit of a shame I really stopped playing League before her re-work kicked in. I think I would've really liked her.
I started league when poppy got reworked so I never got to experience her old gameplay. But since I first played poppy has been my main. A champion so simple but with so much potential
As an old poppy main i can attest to most of the things said in this video.
Old Poppy was how I learned to carry from jg lane .stopped playing after rework. Ult really wasn't unfair her burst was. Burst was assassin like on adc but she was nothing when everything was on cool down.
i hope you make a video about old champs who's still feel fine to play in current days, as if it was made in these days,
champs like riven sivir yasuo etc
Looking back on it, Poppy's old ult feels like a gehto version of More's current ult. But the consequences of it are way different.
I wish they kept her old ult though I loved being able to tower dive with it
Poppys old "R" was unique AND had the perfect name for it... and was perfect for her old role as "iron ambassador"... RIP... but to be fair: her new R is one of the most funny and unique R again... so...
Old poppy ult was the most broken in the game it was combining morgana's black shield and kayle's ult but on steroids
Rest in peace, original Lollypoppy skin splash art
Poppy main back then - Poppy main now.
One of the VERY few reworks that I'd say were good reworks.
One important thing to remember is that Poppy is also one of the best *characters* in League. She's right up there with Jhin and Kindred in character design
Poppy's new look really got me to play her, despite me only playing support at the time
I one-tricked her for like 2 years and oh boy I had the greatest time I could in this game
I missed old poppy. I used to play her top, mid, jg and support…
"There was nothing worth keeping - oh but they kept heroic charge"
I played old poppy. I miss it. The playstyle of "FUCK YALL IM GOING FOR YOU" as you point at one person and just run at them
Probably couls make her ulti deal 50% or 30% less damge to any other champ not selected
My jaw literally dropped when I saw her ultimate. That's just absurd.
She's good, and with every new champion coming with a built in dash, she only gets stronger with every new champion
Her w lasts for 2 seconds with 20 second cooldown, where others have dashes with 2 second cooldowns
