    Tim was very unhappy about the autotune being added in post production, he has outwardly said he was not consulted and furious and insulted by the decision. It's not even careful use of something like melodyne, it's stupid and lazy autotune slapped on top with and it sounds shockingly bad. That said, Tim sounds great.

      I’ve always wondered if it was Andrew Lloyd Webber doing what he does best… insulting his cast! Guy undeniably created some incredible theatre, but let’s just say I REALLY want to see Patti Lupone’s pool…

      Makes so much sense now. Some parts of his singing just doesn't sound right at all and I didn't realize they added autotune post production.

    I was lucky enough to have an excellent seat for this live show, in Melbourne Australia.
    I loved every second of it, I even fell in love with Ben Foster as Jesus LOL.
    I writing this on Friday 29th March 2024 (otherwise known as Good Friday) !!
    I don't blame Tim for being very unhappy about the auto-tune for the DVD.
    Tim can sing perfectly !!

    Also Tim and a few other cast members weren't happy about the autotune, it happened without them knowing, presumably for the DVD

      Yes I recall Tim especially was outraged that they did that to his voice, he may not be the most powerful vocalist in the world but he has no issues with pitch whatsoever and I just feel like it was unnecessary to autotune his voice so much. He's still my favourite Judas by far because I feel like he's one of the only ones to actually understand the character of Judas. I enjoy his voice but his acting and genuineness is what really sells his performances.

    I grew up being wildly annoyed by this show, and when I heard there was a live tour going, I admit that I rolled my eyes. I didn’t think there was any way to make it more palatable for my own taste. Then Tim Minchin opened his mouth and I was like “Ohhhhhhhhh now I get it.” For some reason, Tim’s interpretation of Judas just grabbed my by the lapels and dragged me along for the ride. Every time I watch, I find something new to pick apart and obsess over. I probably put the show on once a week, and I could teach a whole semester on his acting choices in this scene in particular.
    Tim doesn’t try to make Judas into the swaggering rockstar that I think a lot of actors go for- he makes Judas truly human, relatable, and sympathetic in ways that other actors never even touched (in my humble opinion!). I love your description of him as sort of feral- excellent word for the energy he gives off. There’s a heartbreaking moment at the end of the Last Supper where Jesus screams at Judas to “Get OUT!” Tim’s reaction is out of this world - it is so subtle, so simple, but so incredibly powerful. His face just falls, he gives a tiny nod, and then a slight backward step with open arms as if admitting defeat. It chokes me up every time. Watch him as he moves through the crowd to leave - he has a unique interaction with each person who approaches him, and the emotion in his face is absolutely beautiful.
    Can you tell I’m a fan? 😂

      Tim is angry as hell with Jesus. The rest just show panic. Lots of dimension to him here.

    • @clairethompson5549
      @clairethompson5549 5 місяців тому

      @@rockshot100 I love that he lets that anger really show in nuanced ways. He gives us just an incredible range of emotion. There’s a tiny moment in “Heaven on Their Minds” when he talks about all that Jesus says “get twisted ‘round some other way” and he does an annoyed little motion with his hands. We get him simmering from the first moment, and then we just watch him boil over and eventually blow up the whole damn kitchen.
      It’s possible I took that last metaphor a little far.

    • @rockshot100
      @rockshot100 5 місяців тому +1

      @@clairethompson5549 No, you did not. Carl Anderson's Jesus actually breaks into tears, but he is not consistently frustrated and angry like Tim's. Amazing how poignantly he does this and still doesn't overdo the dramatics. It is very understated. He is snarky and sarcastic, trying to get his attention.
      I would love to see it with no auto-tune. Those filters do not always make things better. People are so wrapped-up in tech., they lack common sense.

      @@rockshot100 I think there’s a video out there somewhere of him performing at one of the arena shows without the pitch correction. Tim was PISSED at how much they changed for the DVD release, and I don’t blame him- he sounds incredible on his own!

    Tim really wanted to play Judas, he begged ALW to play it. Tim’s background is in musical theatre and comedy songs, he studied in performing arts in Australia. His accent is quite distinctive as Aussie.
    The blu ray extras show the main cast in a vocal session with the trainer, which is interesting.
    Having seen Tim live 3 times, he does not need auto tune. He was furious with the use of it post production on this.

      I don't think his Aussie accent is really that severe. I kind of hear it and you can tell he's Aussie but he was privately educated and his accent isn't nearly as noticeable as other Australian actors/singers.

    The look is pretty on brand for Tim, especially at that time in his career. He was well known for the contacts and heavy eye make up, as it was a way for people to be able to make out his features more clearly while he was sat at the piano. The only real difference i see to Tim's look is the dreadlocks which he oddly pulls off really well.

    Most British accents, and all Australian ones, are non-rhotic, which is very important for a word like _far_ that you mention. Of course, you must already know this: it's very important for understanding "School Song" from Matilda.

    As others have said, auto-tune was a post-production decision. I saw a performance of this in Sydney Australia, and auto-tune was not used live. It was also a decision that wasn’t made in consultation with the performers. This understandably made Tim (and others) feel disappointed by the commercial release. Tim certainly doesn’t need it.
    One note for you is that Tim is Australian, and so his natural accent is the wide open mouthed long vowel sounds you picked up on. He doesn’t sing with an americanised accent like many other singers do. He sings with his Australian accent, and it is probably magnified because of his singing technique.

    I think what I love most about Tim's performance of Judas is that he shows that often neglected part of Judas' character, that Judas is in love with Jesus and is jealous of Mary. It's subtle, but you can see the pain in his eyes because of it especially in the suicide number too

    I'm pretty sure this is not autotuned but rather the sound quality of the mics as this is in an arena. It sounds like this for everyone and Minchin's Australian accent will add some twang, making it sound more autotuned. Please correct me if I'm wrong :)

    You need to react to the late, great, Carl Anderson from 1973. There is no one that can sing Heaven On Their Minds like he can. He set the bar...and it's a bar many performers fail to reach.
    I like Tim, but he doesn't have the same level of power that Anderson does. Anderson is on a whole other level....the man is in physical pain because he can't get Jesus to listen to him...and you feel it watching him. The show is as much about Judas as it is about Jesus and if this song falls flat then the whole show falls flat.
    Tim has very attractive eyes....which is where his performance shines and he is a very good singer.... Anderson just has that level of power that I look for in this song as it is my favourite from the show. It's probably one of the best opening numbers in a show.

    on the autotune my issue with it is that this isn't like some of the more traditional ballad style pieces some people sing there i could get some autotune because hitting the right notes is important there but in a rock styled piece it simply doesn't matter as much

  • @rockshot100
    @rockshot100 5 місяців тому +1

    Auto tune does not always improve the music, here it diminishes and with filters it erases and blends out his wonderfully nuanced voice and message. Imperfections here are crucial. People are so lost in tech, they abandon common sense. I would love to hear what he actually sang. I have heard so many versions of this and none could hold a candle to Carl Anderson, then came Tim.
