Some corrections: Shield Systems rank 1 also give 20% shields (not 10%), both Payloads rank 1 and 2 give 10% cargo capacity (not 20%). Until now there is no confirmation that Barrets Starship Engineering and Particle Beam Weapon Systems actually do anything - there is no damage increase noticeable. So it's better to give his spot as 3rd crew member to Vasco or Andromeda Kepler as their Aneutronic Fusion skill adds +1 reactor power. To be more specific Sam increases top speed by 30% (in addition to his +1 engine power) and Sarah reduces fuel cost by 30%. The shield bonus (if its not bugged) is calculated additively with your own skills and cargo / fuel cost bonus is calculated multiplicatively with your own skills. Btw. I'm the one who created the topic on Reddit covering crew skills a week ago.
Sarah morgans leadership ability effectively cancels out the crew spot she would otherwise take up. Whatever your crew cap, you can always add sarah. If you have 3 crew cap and only 3 crew stations on your ship, you can still add sarah to make 4

This game really needs a CODEX, where anything you discover will be added dynamically with a description/explanation/location text. This includes crew skills.
Just a tidbit, when you do tue crimson fleet, during the questline you get an item called a comlink which adds additional crew capacity if you're struggling to hit the numbers with reactor, shield and weps to get a big crew
It's crazy you need to sink 9 points into social to even get to crew sizes larger than 3 (4 with Sarah Morgan). The Leadership rank should've just affected efficiency of crew members, just like how a good manager runs a tighter ship than someone who failed upward.
5:55 - I think Sarah doesnt count as crew member coz she has a leadership perk. It doesnt affect ship system, so it's not highlighted, but it seems to work somehow allowing you to take 1 more crew member. 9:23 - green bar is NOT a boost, it's 1 more energy to that system for free. You have Reactor with 28 power. And you have 12 in weapons, 12 in shield and 6 in engine - 30 in total. 28 from reactor and 2 green bars.
same. i had andreja as companion as she can cloak, but the AI is stupid and just annoying 90% of th time. the game is pretty easy anyway in terms of ground combat
Thanks Dude, this was helpful! Another good add is - Erick Von Price (1 payload/3 astrodynamics )- you get him from mars/cydonia barkeep who's in the residential district. You rescue him off a ship. Tip - be nice, give them the ship, then before you free Erick from his cuffs, kill them all and THEN release him. That way you get the ship and Erick when you turn in the quest back in Cydonia.
For people still using early game ships, there is a lady in Cidonia with the anuetronic fusion skill. Extra system points are always welcome and she wont bug out with Amari like Voscoe
Can you assign any of the companion members to your base operations...?? If yes...which ones are the best for your base ?? All the Companions seem to be focused on Ship Operations. I know in Mars, there are Hire crew members that will run your bases..but they cost 9,000 credits or more.
Someone might have already mentioned this but the reason the crew capacity for habs and modules are different is because the habs give the crew a place to sit, the engines, weapons, equipment, etc anything that adds crew capacity of .25 or .50 gives the crew something to do. You can’t have crew without something for the crew to do. At that point they would be a passenger, and passengers’ skills don’t apply to your ship’s stats. You have crew members helping you aim and use the weapons, helping you monitor the engines, helping you use the scan jammer, comspikes, etc.
The difference explains a lot. I was changing crew members around and lost several factors I. E speed dropped and shields. I didn't know why until I redid the changes to my crew and it still did not make a great deal of sense why that happened, but it does now. Thanks for your video. It's the community that's making Starfield work better. Keep up the good work. 👍

I just found another one. Theres a ship that says distress call. You meet a woman named Betty Howser I think. She's a bounty hunter who has dead spacers on the floor of her ship. Give her ship parts and she will work for you. Demolitions expert. The ship name is Lucky Lu.
Vasco's good at shields and gives you more reactor power as well. You only need to invest 1 pt in either. I found this normal npc with hull repair at the start of the game, but lost him somehow. Awesome start to the game.
The green bar isn't an extra bar; it's a free bar. That's why you don't see any increase in shield strength, but you do have an extra bar of energy to spend elsewhere. You can confirm this quickly simply by counting the power have available before and after assigning a crew member who gives you a green bar in any ship system

This was an interesting video. I can't point to a system reason for Sarah not counting towards a crew limit, but an in-game reason could be that she's the only major NPC used to commanding starships and maybe Bethesda decided this makes it easier for your character.

About stealing ships - is a thin line between having the target ship destroyed and having her crippled enough to not hurt you much before you get under 500m and board. I solved this by using 8 (!!!) turrets - this will free my hands ! - 4 with particle, 4 with lasers against shields - and, because of the crazy dam the particle is doing from long range ( almost 3 x more range than lasers ! ) I balanced that ( to not have the target ship destroyed so fast ) by keeping the particle turrets at minimal power (2-3 bars) and the lasers at 8-9 bars. My favorite weapon is the 4 EMP who receive max power - one shot of those will disable any part of the target ship ! Start with engines, then move to laser/particle/guns etc so the pirates are dead in the water - they cannot move nor shoot at you. I found this mix the most efficient, 8-9 times in 10 I manage to board the target ship with no problems. Sad those muppets of security ships many times get mixed up in my fights and they kill the ship I try to board.... Usually only 1 on 3 fights I get pirates alone, other 2 times security ships are involved, and that ruin your chances to get an extra ship...
I don't know why but you can get up to ten crew members on the ship card unless Bethesda planned for more then eight. I just noticed it when I was building my battleship to have eight .
The constelation guys are extremly touchy about attacking uc/freestar authorities, traders and the like. Do the hired crew members have a more flexible sense of moral? also what do the members provide that for example have the skill outpost construction, how am i able to build better stuff when i have them?
Wait... people are saying Barrett is bugged and his skills don't work? If that true? I use way too many particle beams to want to hear that... If it is true though, then I suppose my ship will get that much stronger when his skills are fixed.
I have 5 crew members and one point in ship command, my progression has shown 5 ships out of 25 for a long time now I have boarded and destroyed many ships. Anyone know how to fix this bug?
I lost the ability to even interact with Omari after the Difficult choice mission. Has anyone else lost crew members after progressing the main quest?. I had him assigned to my ship when that mission started. I went to the eye. And after the sadness so to speak. He is no longer in my crew or available to rehire.
Idk if it is a bug but having a crew got some shield stats. For main quest reasons I lost temporally part of that crew. When i remade the same exact crew on the same exact ship.. got less shields. 🤷🏻♂️
I’ve got that stupid game bug where the game crashes when you walk to a certain spot annnnd wouldn’t you know it, it’s the exact spot to get the crew member in Akila at the bar…wtf
The ship I built says I have crew capacity of 10 but can only assign 8, technically 9 but I’m not counting Sarah since she’s free Does anyone know how to get 10 crew assigned if my ship says I can?
Excellent video. I suck a bit at space combat, and have to drop from very hard to hard or even normal so I dont get ganked when exploring. This will give me some breathing room. Thanks.
Go for particle turrets. EZ mode. Also, going slow is sometimes much better than going fast. Get in behind their firing arc and stay there. Boost only when they do to stay on their six
I think that the reason you can only have 3 crew instead of 4 because you take Sam Coe as your crew. Where Sam go Cora (his daughter) will follow so Sam Ceo will take 2 slots.
Thanks. Just started playing. Never came around until now. I was surprised that after so many months this lack of explanation is still there. EF Bethesda. Really.
For me, vasco does not appear to take up crew slots - he does not appear in the ship either. Core characters such as Sarah do count however. I will admit, I wish they elaborated better with what the crew perks actually do. Some (especially outpost perks) appear to do literally nothing
Start the game over again and pay attention when you first talk to Vasco. Then you will understand why he doesn't appear on the ship. Sometimes he does bug out and appear in the ship or in some ship builds he will appear. But I encourage you to pay attention at the beggining when you talk to Vasco.
Can confirm... he mentions an external storage unit that he uses during flight. Hmmm... I need to test if that external storage is only available for the "Frontier" hab or not...
@@khallrik I have come across him a few times inside my ship, but he was all bunched up like he had shut himself down and was just lying on the ground of my captain's quarters.
For me, the value of the shields kept changing even though I didn't change anything about the crew. I think when you land and Vasko gets out of the ship, there is an occasional change. This is completely buggy for me. When Vasko gets out the value goes down, but when he gets back in it doesn't always go up. So the value goes down continuously. On one ship I only had 629 out of 2500+ in the end. I sold my last ship because it annoyed me and then I flew on the next ship without a crew. After this video, I'll try to hire the guy in Cheyenne and leave Vasko out. The video is great and helped a lot, even though I only understood 75% because my English is only mediocre.

My ship can take 13 crew apparently, I wonder if there will be any mods to let us have more than 8
Where can you learn what the companion skills actually do and what bonuses they apply?
I also have 4 including Sarah. I assumed it was because she was also my companion but if that isn't the case it could be her Leadership skill?
I don't know why but you can get up to ten crew members on the ship card unless Bethesda planned for more then eight. I just noticed it when I was building my battleship to have eight .
The constelation guys are extremly touchy about attacking uc/freestar authorities, traders and the like. Do the hired crew members have a more flexible sense of moral?
also what do the members provide that for example have the skill outpost construction, how am i able to build better stuff when i have them?
There is a bug if you have max shields perk and have crew with shield skill it bugs out and you'll get almost half of the shield you should have
Wait... people are saying Barrett is bugged and his skills don't work? If that true? I use way too many particle beams to want to hear that... If it is true though, then I suppose my ship will get that much stronger when his skills are fixed.
0:21 where you can find him / where he can be found
I have 5 crew members and one point in ship command, my progression has shown 5 ships out of 25 for a long time now I have boarded and destroyed many ships.
Hahahah that’s really helpful info! And your accent makes these videos enjoyable to watch
So these are the best? That's it? Constellation companions excluding Andreja&Vasco plus Omari?
it's a bit disappointing but I didn't found any better yet...
Bethesda spent 8 years developing and 10 minutes on tutorials. Thanks Turtle.
Crew is bugged, can disappear in any time and there is no way to get them back plus progress with them is deleted
The ship I built says I have crew capacity of 10 but can only assign 8, technically 9 but I’m not counting Sarah since she’s free
Does anyone know how to get 10 crew assigned if my ship says I can?
unfortunately perk only goes to 8 and I don't know if there's anything in game to push it higher
Listening and learning... Thank you Mr. Turtle.
I am using the shieldbreaker and my companions disappear occasionally. You know why this is ? They are shown to be at the ship, but they are not there
I don't know, there's quite a bit of bugs related to ships
1:00 Pro Tip :You must be front of npc, if you can´t talk. Around 160-170 angle degrees is enough
Thanks for your hard informative work, more power to you ✊
Excellent video.
I just found out that clearing ryujin quest will generate a quest marquer on all story companions XD now i know who can be recruted in advance XD
I think that the reason you can only have 3 crew instead of 4 because you take Sam Coe as your crew. Where Sam go Cora (his daughter) will follow so Sam Ceo will take 2 slots.
No, because Cora takes a Passenger slot, which is different than a Crew slot.
Cora doesn’t take passenger slot, I have 0 slot and she is onboard
The Crew is all on the Ship: So you count as well!
I thought it was just that your companion takes up a free spot on your ship, whoever it is
Thanks. Just started playing. Never came around until now. I was surprised that after so many months this lack of explanation is still there. EF Bethesda. Really.
Is there a way to silence your companions while on the ship?
I'd rather not hear that Ive taken down the shields or grav drive by everyone aboard.
outside of muting all voices in settings no
Thank you Senior Turtle.@@angryturtlegaming
For me, vasco does not appear to take up crew slots - he does not appear in the ship either. Core characters such as Sarah do count however. I will admit, I wish they elaborated better with what the crew perks actually do. Some (especially outpost perks) appear to do literally nothing
Start the game over again and pay attention when you first talk to Vasco. Then you will understand why he doesn't appear on the ship. Sometimes he does bug out and appear in the ship or in some ship builds he will appear. But I encourage you to pay attention at the beggining when you talk to Vasco.
@@arieltorres3594? He basically says that he upkeeps the ship, and helps you with whatever tasks you require of him. So I'm not getting it.
@@LynxStarAutothe robot says it stores it's self during flight
Can confirm... he mentions an external storage unit that he uses during flight. Hmmm... I need to test if that external storage is only available for the "Frontier" hab or not...
@@khallrik I have come across him a few times inside my ship, but he was all bunched up like he had shut himself down and was just lying on the ground of my captain's quarters.
I have Vasco on my ship and don’t see a green bar when in space
you need omar
0:39 just started watching and I hope he's talking about Omar I frigging dig this bro
1:17 yeahhhh buddy he's always got a seat in my ship 🤙
I have this one assigned to my ship, there is no extra shield bar
42 is always the anwser. Nee!! 😂❤
When I got a green bar from someone, I honestly just though.. free power, nice. Cool that it does more than that too
Gideon Aker has rank 2 ballistic system and rank 2 missile system I think I found him in cydonia
Can somebody help an old fart how can i change things on my ships (on xbox) everytime i try it just puts ship materials in my ship inventory and doesnt change my ship?? Plz help im not good on these things thanks
you need to talk with ship technician on landing pad
VASCO disappeared from my crew list. Not sure if that's a glitch or not. Also Omari who i hired is gone.
Sounds like Borat is narrating this, love it 😂
This is good, I'm planning a "pirate lord" build when i get this game later this month and I'll need a goid crew.
they will complain a lot 😅
@@angryturtlegaming that will be something to consider, indeed.
Isn't the reason Sarah is "free" is because she has the leadership skill? Is she still able to be added as an extra free crew member over the normal maximum if you have leadership maxed out?
isn't it because sarah is his active companion?
@@GTexperience_Channel I'm pretty sure not any active companion will allow you to do this, but I haven't tested it. But crew assignment SHOULD be separate from active companion.
@@CarBENbased just. Assign 3 crew to your ship (no sarah). And get a companion (not sarah). And u will see that when assigning the active companion to the ship crew, that it will ignore crew cap. The ui doesn't properly show it, but that is how I thought it worked. U could try using (vasko, annoying fan, sam, barrett) etc. Just don't have sarah in your crew or as active companion.
@@GTexperience_Channel I had Sam as my active companion but was still able to assign 4 crew without having Ship Command. So either Sarah or Vasco counts as free. I've not tested which one yet.
@@jeffhartsell but u didn't assign Sam?
what would be an alternate choice for sam for those a little farther in the main story
my Sam did just fine in the main story ;)
@@angryturtlegaming i meant for those who no longer have him
So I have 2 crew members capacity on my ship. I add Sarah Morgan and Andreja assigned to it. But on board I have only one member. What am I doing wrong?
I don't know do you have different companion than those two?
@@angryturtlegaming yeah, I've tried different companions and it always the same: only the companion that follows me is on board the ship. Also if I add Vasco, it always stays outside the ship but never in. And I've noticed only Sarah reacts on ship behavior and comments it (docking, fighting, landing etc.).
What about Crew Stations?
Crew Stations are required for them to have somewhere to work.
Crew Capacity is to provide a function for them to do.
@@bugnazbinnyking1198 that was a bug, already fixed for me
Sheep crew? I love having all those sheep follow me through the stars.
