Great job. Been looking at both of these. I've now decided on the Meatstick. You have a great style on the reviews. Clear, concise, to the point and not repeating yourself over and over. I look forward to watching your other videos. Thanks
Great video. I purchased the Meater +. Using the MEATER Link WiFi vs. MEATER Cloud Wireless Distance documentation, I was able to connect the Meater + to a tablet then use my cell to monitor my Meater + probe from anywhere on my two acer yard. I also tested the cloud and was able to continuously monitor my probe from my grand-daughters soccer game 32 miles away. COOK ON!!!!!
Thank you! Yes, the meater cloud wireless is a very nice function. I was going to show that function in the video but it was already getting too long so I had to cut it out. It is an awesome option if you need to leave your house and have an extra phone or tablet available. The MeatStick also has a similar function as well.
Great review and helpful. I've watched other reviews that don't quite agree with the "range" issue between the two thermometers. Not a big deal for me, but it does show that one's range with the two devices can vary.
The type of steak would be important for the block Meater that has 4 probes. It would be more recognizable as to which cut is at what temp, instead of constantly figuring out which probe number the “steak” is to figure out what is done. I cooked some porterhouses and 2” ribeyes and it was nice to know probe 1&2 were my ribeyes and 3&4 were the porterhouses.
Good review. One point you mentioned but sort of glossed over was the perpendicular set up required for the Meatstick. On your big rig that is no issue but for smaller cookers that arrangement could be an issue. Especially if the meat needs to be moved around a bit during the cook. Just thought I'd mention it as some viewers are sure to be like me (I'd guess).
Yes, you are 100% correct. I realized that after when I was using it on my Pit Barrel Cooker. I didn't notice a difference when I had the probe in different locations. It shouldn't be an issue I just wanted to relay the info I got from The MeatStick's website. Thank you for bringing that up in the comments so others can hopefully see this.
Hello, thank you for this video. In this, you place the charger very close to the probe. In case of bad weather, if I want to keep the charger inside the house, what is the maximum distance I can move the charger and the probe?
You cant really have the charger more then about 6 feet from the probe which can be an issue with bad weather. I have had both of these out in a light rain and they were fine. not to say they are waterproof though, they just happened to be ok when I did it.
Great video, very informative. I'd like to see a comparison of the 2 focusing on connectivity (yes, you touched on Bluetooth, but beyond that). Is the Meatstick easier to use re: Wifi? Do you need a "bridge" device as the Meater requires to connect to the cloud and monitor from anywhere? I have a Flame Boss 500, and that connects directly to Wifi, then I can monitor from anywhere and control my fire/heat. With these, I can't control my fire/heat, but I love no wires for shorter smokes.
8:45 the MEATER has alerts that you can setup for ambient temperature as well. You just add them to your cook. 11:15 with the MEATER you can setup a spare device to relay the information to MEATER Cloud and then you can monitor the cook from anywhere, even the grocery store when you run out for more beer while you’re waiting for that pork butt to smoke.
The meater cloud is a great function for tracking your cook from anywhere. The MeatStick has the same function and I actually had video of demonstrating the function but had to cut it because of the length of the video already being long.
Or you can opt for the Meater block, more expensive, but four probes and the WiFi for cloud access is built in. I like the deep fry access of the Meatstick, not something I do very often but you never know
I think you should point out that the Meater Block doesn't have range issues (neither does the Meatstick Bridge Set) because they employ wi-fi instead of Bluetooth. So the question then becomes, without range as an issue, which one is preferable?
I don’t have any experience using the MEATER block or the MeatStick bridge set so I couldn’t make a comment on them. I’m sure the range would be better using those sets. That being said I would still prefer the MeatStick because it is waterproof and can be used for deep frying (which I will have a video on soon) Thank you for the comment
@@SmokestackJoes I would tend to agree. While I have a Meater Block and love all that it does for me when I'm cooking, the waterproofness of the Meatstick probe is important when washing/cleaning the probe. No water can get inside the ambient end and render the probe useless (I've heard some have a problem with that). But another thing that's a practical advantage, and the one design decision I have an issue with the Meater about, is the Meatstick's insertion end is way more pointed than the Meater's insertion end. The Meater's probe has a rounded kind of blunt end which makes it more difficult to insert into the meat. I'd imagine the Meatstick's probe would be much easier to insert.
@@mikeg6069 I am glad you brought up to bluntness of the meater probe tip. I wanted to mention that as well. The more pointed tip of the meatstick definitely helps it go into the meat easier.
Thanks a lot! And welcome to the BBQ clan, it’s an awesome hobby. If you are looking for any specific recipes just let me know, I’ll try and make a video for it if I don’t already have one.
Great video man, not sure why you don’t have many subscribers. Great content this early on, definitely adding you to my list of great bbq UA-camrs to watch. Keep it up man!
Neither of these 2 probes would be small enough for that. The MeatStick does make one called the MiniX that would work though. I have one and I would highly recommend it, Its perfect for small stuff like that.
Just when you thought it couldn't get better, they come out with this! Kind of spendy but well worth the money, can't wait to use it on the grill this Summer!
Can either of these models use more than a single probe? Example... I am cooking three tri-tips of different sizes AND a large steak? Will the app allow more than one single probe to be used at the same time? FANTASTIC video!
I put my meater plus block about 15 to 25 feet from my smoker / grill. This gives me enough range on my phone. I agree their range is falsely advertised / terrible, but you can get better by moving your block 15 to 25 feet away. I haven't had any problems with the block losing connection at that distance. I always go into the advanced settings and check up see how the block and meater probe are connected.
This is very good advice. The distance you can keep the block away also depends on what kind of cooker you are using. I found with my bigger smoker which is thicker I have to keep the block closer.
@@SmokestackJoes true, but I bet you a hamburger that you could move it away from that little table on the smoker itself and gain at least a few feet. :). Possibly more. Also, think about position relative to the smoker.. there is a fire box with a path for signals to get out... You might find that from the fire box end you might get more distance. Dunno if that helps relative to the house though... Might be the wrong direction. I definitely agree that there advertised distance is not realistic at all. If you cook on an open pit spit I don't think you'd get more than about 100' to 125' total. I live in a very rural area with not too much interference on the frequencies Bluetooth uses... And I'm good if I can get about 80 to 100 feet of distance through 1 wall.
Haven't ever used either, in fact that's why I'm here. I have watched a video directly from Meater, and according to their instructions, the orientation of your phone was wrong. As soon as you finished setting up your cooks times and temps, you laid your phone flat on the counter. In his video, he specifically said to have your phone up right leaning against something. He left it on a small table within feet of his grill. Then linked to a tablet he had inside with him. Not sure if this is why your connection failed. But he was very specific. Without explaining specifically Why.
Thanks for the comment, I was not aware of that information. It sounds like they were using a phone as an extender which I was not doing. Using a phone as an extender and then connecting to that with another phone or tablet would definitely help with the distance.
I'm not sure of any leave in temp probes that would be good for direct heat. I would get a Thermoworks Thermapen one. That is the thermometer I use for everything. You will just have keep checking the temp of the steak as you cook it.
Putting both into the same piece of meat and then checking with a probe thermometer would have far more useful results. Other than the distance there is really no way to determine which one is better since accuracy trumps everything else.
I had used Meater when it 1st came out but it wouldn't work with high temp grilling I was doing 500 degrees +, big red warning on screen no cook info. Does the meatsteak have an upper ambient cooking limit? thanks for your work
Thanks for the comment. Yes, The MeatStick does have an ambient cook temp limit. It is 572 degrees fahrenheit. So, you may be able to do high temp grilling with it but I have not tried it before at those temps.
The Meater seems to work better using the Cloud than the Bluetooth for distance. This is the first time hearing about the Meat Stick. Will have to check out the mini meat Stick. Thanks.
Thanks a lot I'm glad it was useful for you. I'm subbed to your channel, I'm in the 508 so I gotta support a local. I really enjoy your content though, the editing is great.
I have not answered this and it is a very good question. I am not exactly sure but I think that they do not want you to submerge the probe in water. since the dishwasher will just be spraying it with water that it is fine.
I presume that the reason the Meater shows different steaks is that when you review historical cooks, you can see specifically what type of steak was involved. Just indicating "steak" for all steaks is not very descriptive. Of course you can enter your own description, but it's simpler to just select the cut of meat from the list.
One thing you didn’t cover. What if you want to use 2-3 of either one? Can you add more and still be able to read them on the same app together side by side? Not sure how that would work.
I am not positive because I don't have 2 But I believe you can. I just got the TempSpike Twin probe and will be doing a video with it so I will be sure to test it out and see.
I enjoyed the vid and the intro to the MeatStick. I’ve owned the MEATER for a little less than a year now and never had any of the distance problems you’ve had…I don’t deep fry so I don’t care about that feature. I set my temp for 120F, pull then rest…then seer….To each his own. I suspect the inter color is affected by the video.
You spent some time showing the alerts on the meat stick, but did not mention that MEATER does the same, but not limited to just 4. Also MEATER has repeater that allows you to use Wi-Fi, and you can go anywhere you want.
Both the MEATER and The MeatStick have the option for wifi repeater which is the best option when you have to be far away from the probes. I had recorded segments for that but had to remove them from the video as it was already a very long video.
@@SmokestackJoes I get that length is a big factor. Just seems confusing now that connectivity was such a big factor in your recommendation, but it is really a non-factor since both can have infinite distance through internet. As a shopper, it is hard to feel good relying on your recommendation at this point.
One other question, I’m wondering how long the apps will be supported. I know Traeger now owns Meater, but do we know about the longevity of the company that owns MeatStick?
This has always been my main concern with these wireless thermometers. If the app is ever obsolete then it is useless. For now it looks like it will be around for awhile though.
Thanks a lot I appreciate it! I tried my best to keep the video as short and sweet as possible but it still ended up being a long video. I am glad you enjoyed it.
I have a meater and I have an issue with the signal making it out of the oven and bbq. I put the block on top of the oven and directly next to the grill as close as I can. Did you have a similar issue?
I have not tried the thermometer in the oven but I have noticed with the MEATER the block needed to be quite close to the grill. The MeatStick also needs to be close but I found it can be a couple more feet away.
Great review. I use the Meater and have a suggestion for you. I get it with the distance thing. Annoying. Buuuut, if you take the charger and put it 10 to 20 feet from your cook towards where you'll be...you add that amount to the distance. It's a repeater, so I've found that helps depending on if it's from BBQ or oven...etc. Please let us know if that works out for you. Thanks.
Thanks a lot I really appreciate the comment. I can’t even start to explain how much time I spent editing this video to make it as short and sweet as possible for a better viewing experience.
@@ralphlint6993 They both aren't really meant to be used as instant reads. Each one has a delay that would make it hard to use as one. For an instant read I will always recommend a thermoworks thermapen
Thank you. I did have some issues linking my MeatStick when I first got it but it has been very good since then. I found out that when you are setting up your cook you need to keep the probe in the base, then when the app prompts you to insert it you should remove it from the base and insert it into the meat. Idk why it is more difficult when you first get it to link but after I've used it a few times it links up fine with no issues. Please let me know if you have anymore questions, I am happy to help!
I totally misunderstood what your comment meant! Thank you very much for pointing out that the link in the description was not working. It is working now and thanks again for letting me know, I would have never known.
solid review, thanks. how intrusive is the app in terms of access privileges? is it impossible to use without creating an account / or at least offline?
So like most the apps nowadays it is pretty intrusive in those aspects. I believe you have to create an account to use it. Also, When using the app you will need to allow the app to use your Bluetooth location services. I wasn't a big fan of this but I'm noticing more and more apps are going this way. Not sure if it would be possible to use offline. Thanks for the questions and I'm glad you enjoyed the review. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
@@SmokestackJoes at least on Android the app requesting location for BT usage. That's due to a permission requirement Google made. So any app that has to access BT Google requires it. It sucks and doesn't even make sense for something like a temp probe, but what are you going to do? Lol.
I think I remember reading somewhere that any wireless thermometers can have issues in ceramic cookers because of how thick they are. I don’t have one so I am not sure about this
@@SmokestackJoes issue was not with communication distance but with temperature reporting… I had him put in a wired thermometer and then he sent the picture of a grill full of beef short ribs with Meatstick X 1” from wall
Yeah you wouldn’t be able to use this thermometer on a filet. The MeatStick makes a mini version that would work on a filet though, it’s pretty sweet I just picked one up
Didn't check displayed internal Temps with an instant read. Big factor missed. I think you also missed how to setup a meater+ wifi vs. Bluetooth. Being paid is an influence factor.
You are right about checking accuracy with an instant read. I had planned to but forgot and was kicking myself when I realized it during editing. That being said I have checked it with an instant read and both the Meater and The MeatStick are accurate. I also had footage of me going through wifi set up with both the Meater and The MeatStick but the video was already getting too long so I left it out. I appreciate the comment
Meater has a new model for $120 that clears up many issues, including connectivity range and temp range (ambient now up to over 900f). This comparison is not covering that one.
Yes, The new MEATER 2 is very nice. This is an older video, way before that one came out. I do have a newer video where I compare the MEATER 2 to the Typhur Sync.
@@SmokestackJoes Thanks for the reply, which I think was partially to let others know about your update. I just looked at the new video - a very nice review. I'll probably go with the Meater 2 as I will not be dealing with distance issues. My compliments on what looks like a very nice job of editing, combining new work with the original video - No sense in repeating what you already covered regarding the Typhur!
Great video, very helpful. I have a Meater Block and not loving it. Probe is not accurate (yes, inserted fully etc.) and almost lost a Wagyu as the Meater was close to 20F off (showing 20 lower than actual). I popped in my Thermapen as I was suspicious of the readings on the Meater and just in time to save the steak. So the Meater is an expensive fail for me. Interested in the MeatStick though as a result of your video, so I'll be giving that a try.
The Thermapen is my go to for basically everything, It is by far the best thermometer out there. For a wireless thermometer though The Meatstick has been much better for me then the Meater. I am always using my Thermopen though, because I know its always accurate. Good job on saving that steak though! Overcooking a beautiful piece of wagyu is a crime in some areas haha thanks for the comment 👍
Great video, but one small item of note, you were very focused on the distance and in reading on the Meater, if you turn on the app before removing the probe from the base it will connect to your phone app not the base and you will only end up with 33' range. In order to get the greater range you have to completely close the app before you remove the probe from the base, that way when you remove the probe from the base it will connect to the base, not the app. Then you turn the app on it connects to the base, not the probe, and the app has a greater range with the base then it does the probe.
I did not know that, thank you for the info. I may have done that before but I am not sure. I will definitely give it a try and see if the distance is better. Thanks!
I agree they are pretty much the same, I think I mentioned that in the video. The only differences which made me choose the MeatStick was the distance is better on the MeatStick and I liked how the point on the probe is more pointy on the MeatStick, the meater point is very blunt.
Yes, I have not tried the meater block yet though. The MeatStick is coming out with something similar to the meater block. I’m hoping to be able to get one and do a video on it
All I got for making this video was the thermometer that I tested. I do receive a small amount whenever someone purchases their products through the link. Which is very helpful since I have very small channel right now and anything helps. Thanks for the comment
I was contacted by the MeatStick and was sent their product to do a video on. I recently contacted the Meater people to see if they wanted to send me their product to do a comparison video to the MeatStick just like your video did...we'll see if they reply back and if not, then I'll just do a video on the MeatStick. The steak you cooked was perfectly pink and very juicy!
Yes they do give me a small amount for anything sold through my link which is great because I am such a small channel and anything helps. I was not compensated for the video other then the thermometer. That being said, believe it or not everything I say in the video I 100% believe and even if I was not being paid for the link I would say The MeatStick is better. I have not touched my meater since this video but constantly use the MeatStick and also picked up their mini X which is fantastic. The MeatStick is a great company that is willing to work with the smaller UA-cam channels which is great by them.
I wanted to be honest. With longer cooks like brisket or pork butt I don’t use it because it’s less likely you will over cook those cuts. I really like the wireless thermometers for smaller cuts of meat that can over cook quickly, like steak, pork chops, or a whole chicken.
Meatstick X was by far the worst purchase I have made… replaced after 6 months due to loss of connection, a month later same story. Straight in the bin. Worst $169 I have spent.
I haven't had the same experience and I have 3 of them. That's too bad to hear though because I really do like their products. Did you try to see if t needs a firmware update? The MeatStick is always doing new firmware updates.
@@SmokestackJoes they never responded. But i am from germany. So maybe they are not interested in doing customer service. I supported the Kickstarter campaign for the Meatstick Mini and had 4 Meatsticks. Probably not bought enough? who knows?

That being said this is an honest review and I really like the MeatStick more than the MEATER BUT… as thermometers go I will always say the the thermoworks thermapen is hands down the best

@@SmokestackJoes Ordered the meatstick wifi pro set with the wifi extender and case. Happy New Year.
When I use my gas grill when do I flip them?
I would flip them when the reach around 100 degrees
Was that the newer model of meater that advertises the 165' range? I like the versatility of the meat stick.
Yes I believe it is the newest model. It is the meater +
with max temps in the 550+ range what happens when the ambient temp goes over the max temp of the probes? do the probes melt?
I am not really sure but I don’t want to find out lol I do know they say not to but it over direct heat so I’m guessing it would cause some damage
Great video, really helped looking to purchase one of these myself. Thanks
Thanks a lot I'm glad it was useful for you. I'm subbed to your channel, I'm in the 508 so I gotta support a local. I really enjoy your content though, the editing is great.
Sorry, you might have answered this before... There are a lot of comments... The Meater isn't waterproof yet it's dishwasher safe? How does that work?
I have not answered this and it is a very good question. I am not exactly sure but I think that they do not want you to submerge the probe in water. since the dishwasher will just be spraying it with water that it is fine.
Great thorough videos but like but as Tony Adcock stated I was able to use my MeaterPlus from 20 miles away using WiFi
Yes you are correct. The MeatStick also has the Wi-Fi option. I’m hoping to do a new video that will show that feature
I presume that the reason the Meater shows different steaks is that when you review historical cooks, you can see specifically what type of steak was involved. Just indicating "steak" for all steaks is not very descriptive. Of course you can enter your own description, but it's simpler to just select the cut of meat from the list.
That makes sense! I don’t track my cooks so I did not even think of that. Thanks a lot for the comment I appreciate the input
Yes the video always makes the color look different, it’s a little aggravating because the steaks always look over cooked.
Great editing and straight to the point 👍
Thanks a lot I appreciate it! I tried my best to keep the video as short and sweet as possible but it still ended up being a long video. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Great review. Thanks.
does this software work with the MeatStick probes? and visa versa
Yes it should work, if you are only using the probe without the extender your capable distance will just be shorter
what happens if sensor gets direct fire touch?
I've never done it so I am not sure
I have a meater and I have an issue with the signal making it out of the oven and bbq. I put the block on top of the oven and directly next to the grill as close as I can. Did you have a similar issue?
I have not tried the thermometer in the oven but I have noticed with the MEATER the block needed to be quite close to the grill. The MeatStick also needs to be close but I found it can be a couple more feet away.
Shouldn't you sear first to seal in all the juices?
You can definitely do that. I like to smoke it first so it gets all the smoke flavor, then sear it.
It is a myth that searing locks in juices. It does not. In fact, the reverse sear such as demonstrated here retains more juices,
Great review. Thanks.
Thank you! I’ve found that I can only keep the charger about 10 feet away until it loses its connection with the probe
That’s how you do a review unlike other ppl where it takes 20 wasted mins to even start a point.
Thanks a lot I really appreciate the comment. I can’t even start to explain how much time I spent editing this video to make it as short and sweet as possible for a better viewing experience.
Would u ever do a video on them in boiling water to see which one is closer to an Instant reader
Or in ice water
@@ralphlint6993 They both aren't really meant to be used as instant reads. Each one has a delay that would make it hard to use as one. For an instant read I will always recommend a thermoworks thermapen
Great video but meat stick link is not working 🤨
Lol.
@@Bigheadedwon Ahh that makes sense. Its like that with all apps now its crazy!
@Manhunt0r Create a fake account
thanks, confirmed “1 inch from big green egg” was the problem with Meatstick X I recommend 🤔
On a fillet of beef, the thermometer would stick out on the other side.
@@SmokestackJoes You can return it.
Thanks!
@@SmokestackJoes was the distance better brother?
@@mr.marquis9081 No, It did not seem to make a difference for me
If you get a kick back from meat stick it’s hard to give a fair review on the meater . I have both and there and there pretty much the same.
I agree they are pretty much the same, I think I mentioned that in the video. The only differences which made me choose the MeatStick was the distance is better on the MeatStick and I liked how the point on the probe is more pointy on the MeatStick, the meater point is very blunt.
yeah free meat stick,, unbiased my butt.
Meater block is wifi, so you can be at the store and have connection
Yes, I have not tried the meater block yet though. The MeatStick is coming out with something similar to the meater block. I’m hoping to be able to get one and do a video on it
full disclosure, The Meat Stick paid for this video.
All I got for making this video was the thermometer that I tested.
I do receive a small amount whenever someone purchases their products through the link. Which is very helpful since I have very small channel right now and anything helps.
Thanks for the comment
If you need a thermometer and a phone to cook a steak....I would stick to cars
Hahaha that is a very great point. Awesome comment thank you
You put the meater into far!! there’s lines on there you know insert it all the way in
Yes there are lines on the meater that let you know how far to insert it, I believe I mentioned that in the video. Thanks for the comment 👍
Hopefully they will send you a Meater to test. I already had a Meater that's why I decided to do the comparison video with it.
Which one is better.......of course, the one who is paying for the video and kickback for using the link to buy
The Meater and the Meat Stick are temperature probes for cooking meat.🍗🥩
Unfortunately MeatStick do not ship to all EU countries.
Waste of time just to find out at the end of the video you don’t use leave in thermometers. 😂
Way too many audio edits.Whats the rush?
I was trying to keep the video as short as possible because it was already very long.
I lost 3 of 4 meatsticks because within one year. App can't connect anymore. Never again.
That’s a bummer, did you contact them? Their customer service is usually pretty good
@@SmokestackJoes they never responded. But i am from germany. So maybe they are not interested in doing customer service. I supported the Kickstarter campaign for the Meatstick Mini and had 4 Meatsticks. Probably not bought enough? who knows?
It's the monotone voice for me
i'm glad said you being paid by 1 of the products. just so we know why you picked them as the winner.🤣
Haha yeah I figured that would make me come off as a little biased. But they didn’t pay me, they just sent me the thermometer for free to do a review on.
That being said this is an honest review and I really like the MeatStick more than the MEATER BUT… as thermometers go I will always say the the thermoworks thermapen is hands down the best
@@SmokestackJoes I own the Meater+. It works excellent except for the random disconnecting.
