I have one of these fish in my tank. Absolutely gorgeous fish, and, when caught very small, they become very personable with you. Mine sees me approach and meets me at the top of the tank for his food.
The long eared sunfish is one of my most favorite fish to keep. Sadly they tend to be somewhat territorial in the aquarium. I had one many years ago and i caused a heated discussion with my grandmother. She wanted to know how much I paid for it. I never was able to convince her it can from our local stream.
I had one that I caught In small, had lived for eight year in a 100 liter aquarium with a black carp and two red carps , It was a very peaceful fish and liked to come and eat from my hand. When he died my whole family was very sad. After that I had several In a bigger tank, they were so aggressive that they killed each other.
Kinda insane that these guys are all over North America, super tolerant of a variety of water conditions, and don't require a heater and yet people don't even think of them as an option! Which... isn't entirely absurd when you realize that usually the only way to buy them is to either catch them (good luck keeping it alive after the stress of being caught on rod and reel) or expensive specialist.
Does anyone knows somebody who could sell about 2 dozen of the longear sunfish ? I’m in Cali and we don’t have them here , would look nice in my pond , I can pay a good price and shipping for them , makes and females

What region are these long ears from?
Here in Oklahoma we have a different strain of long ear. Ours are still beautiful but not like these.

are you using (or supplementing with) any actinic lighting to make their colors pop like that? or is that all just normal lighting (like T5 etc)
