Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (Live in Las Vegas) HD

Thanks so much for your reaction to Elvis (Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16, 1977).
Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (ua-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/v-deo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

I will subscribe and hope you find out who Elvis really is. Whenever there is a huge talent, there are jealous people who tell lies about them to tear them down. Elvis didn’t even understand racism as he grew up with both black best friends and white friends. He is from the ghetto, and all his life tried to help people less fortunate. Thanks for this reaction and try to learn more. Read these comments all the way through. They tell the truth.❤❤❤❤ A side note, Elvis was Michael Jackson's father-in-law and Michael used a lot of his moves in his performances.

Elvis was born and grew up in Tupelo Mississippi on the black side of town called , Shake Rag. His mom and church taught him to be colorblind I think you are selling Elvis short-he did not write but 2 songs in his life ........but every songwriter of the era wanted him to record their songs. Rock and Roll is not just blues....its a combination of country, blues, white and black gospel and the pop sounds of the day. Elvis went to white and black churches...loved all music.
Hound Dog as not written by Big Mama THornton....it was wrote for her in 1951 by 2 white Jewish song writers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.they also wrote hits for The Coasters for Ben E King, Charlie Brown, Big Joe Turner etc ...hundreds of singers have covered their songs.
This team is in the Rock Hall oF Fame and the Songwriters hall of Fame.
They wrote songs specifically for ELvis and he had huge hits with them.
Blues ICON BB King was friends with Elvis for his entire career, hung out with him.
Here are some quotes by BB on Elvis:
As ELVIS Presley developed, he “started to turn heads, including mine. He had everything. The looks, the talent.” We became friendly."
As he became more successful, Presley would also help King land gigs. And over the years, King would defend his friend from accusations of cultural theft.
“Music is owned by the whole universe,” King said in a 2010 interview. “It isn’t exclusive to the Black man or the white man or any other color.” In his 1996 autobiography, Blues All Around Me, King wrote, “Elvis didn’t steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he’d grown up on, same is true for everyone. When Elvis sang he made you believe it and thats what made me like him.
'Rock Pop Great Jackie WIlson talking about Elvis
"A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied from Elvis"
James Brown and Elvis Presley were good friends and admired each others talents. James authored two books, and one contains this quote about Elvis:
'I wasn't just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, dedicated, and God loved him... .we use to sing spirituals when we got together

Truth be told, Lieber & Stoller wrote Hound Dog, Big Mama released it first.. 🥃🤙 when Elvis did release it, Lieber & Stoller were upset as he changed it into uptempo futuristic arrangements. Then it sold 7,000,000 albums, and Lieber & Stoller gleefully said "maybe Elvis was right". LOLOLOL he made them $$$$$$$$ sheets. 💰💰💰💰

Elvis recorded his version after hearing Freddy Bell and the Bellboys performance of the song. The lyrics had been modified. If you just listen to the lyrics, it doesn’t make much sense. It was the beat that sold that song. Yeah, the writers made a lot of cash off writing songs for Elvis. Too bad their professional relationship ended.

So what song should you try next? I got you. THE ONE SONG THAT WILL TALK TO GENERATIONS of YOUNG PEOPLE for THOUSANDS OF YEARS to come. "If I Can Dream." ua-cam.com/video/u-pP_dCenJA/v-deo.html
Imagine the 1960s, race riots. JFK Shot Dead. RFK Shot Dead. Malcolm X Shot Dead. Dr Martin Luther King shot dead. In particular, the MLK and RFK assassinations affected Elvis beyond repair and pushed him into action. Elvis knew MLK personally. They would speak on the phone. There were MANY ROADBLOCKS to get this song to the public square.
NBC executives said NO. Elvis' manager Tom Parker said NO. Sponsors and advertisers over at NBC who was supporting this TV special said NO. NOONE wanted to touch the subject of racism and human unkindness, but Elvis. In the end, Elvis won and got his chance, so he placed the song AT THE END of his show, right where they wanted him to finish with a Christmas song. Elvis had already agreed to the Christmas song. He was a deeply religious man, and would spread the Word daily.
Soon as Elvis heard this song he said he was placing it at the end, the grand finale. Everyone was pissed. Except for Elvis. He changed the world. When it mattered, when IT REALLY MATTERED, Elvis did big things to bring people together. Typically he did these things behind the scenes, he never asked for praise for any of his generous deeds, which were MANY.
But THIS TIME... for the first time he wanted to lend his voice PUBLICALLY. The nation was in mourning and fighting. Elvis saw a vision of peace and inclusion that very very few other people were seeing at the time. We are in NEED of his voice and vision TODAY.
    If I Can Dream. ua-cam.com/video/u-pP_dCenJA/v-deo.html

Ok first big mama sang hound dog first but she didn't write it either. 2 white guys wrote it. 2nd how do you steal a song? Are you saying he didn't have permission to sing a song, or didn't pay royalties for the songs? Youd be wrong. When Michael Jackson sang songs he didn't write was he stealing them? Did Whitney Houston steal i will always love you? No to all those questions. Elvis loved everyone. Your color didn't matter to him. He gave to everyone. Get over the lies about him and understand how much he brought to the table. For fs sake MJ married Elvis's daughter and hired his costume designer after Elvis passed. James Brown loved Elvis. Jackie Wilson loved Elvis. Muhammad Ali loved Elvis. Those are 3 men that didn't pay lip service to anyone. They knew him personally so im thinking he was a pretty awesome man. Someone started a rumor about Elvis. Its been debunked many times but it still persists. MJ has horrible rumors about him too. Can't let a rumor form your opinions. Dive in and learn how much he gave the world. Go listen to the interview with his childhood friend about him living in the dirt poor neighborhood and how much they loved him as a child. After that go look at how hard people came down on MJ. People who listen to rumors and judge by them miss the real people. Im betting you are bigger than that and will do some research.

You have Elvis completely wrong. But that's ok. The truth is out there if you want to learn the truth. It will shock you.
The biggest Legends in the black community THAT KNEW ELVIS are on record. Here are a few of the biggest, and they actually KNEW Elvis personally and professionally.
RANDY JACKSON of the JACKSON 5: "Elvis used Rock and Roll to bridge the gap between whites and minorities. He was a wonderful person."
BB KING: 'Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism', The King of the Blues, B.B. King said in 2010. 'With Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. And when I say that, believe me I should know'. -- BB KING
BEYONCE- Elvis is iconic; a lot of performers today look to him for inspiration.
CHUCK BERRY: “Describe Elvis Presley? He was the greatest who ever was, is or ever will be.”
MUHAMMAD ALI - 'Elvis was my close personal friend. He had a robe made for me. I don't admire nobody, but Elvis Presley was the sweetest, most humble and nicest man you'd want to know. We must understand, Elvis did lot for poor people, he cared for people, he had a good heart, he just wasn't a person who was great with talent, but he was great in spirit and with God in his heart. I wouldn't praise nobody if he don't deserve it, because I am the greatest of all time in boxing, in boxing. I said boxing ! But I'm telling you, I'm Black, I'm a Islamic, I'm 100% different from you. But I’ll tell the world Elvis was the greatest of all time. I'm a Muslim who's black who stands up for what he believes. I don't have to say what I don't feel, I'm not false, I don't have to say this. I have no Bosses. I'm free. He to me, is one of the greatest singers, actors and all round men of all time.” ~ "THE GREATEST" MUHAMMAD ALI.
The "GODFATHER OF SOUL" JAMES BROWN: “I wasn’t just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, and dedicated, and God loved him … I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There will never be another like that Soul Brother”. During Elvis' private family wake, James was the LAST ONE TO LEAVE. 3 hours and 30 minutes later -- it took several of his security guards to physically help him out of the room. James was devastated -- James and Elvis sang Gospel together many a night to all hours of the morning at each others' homes. James Brown was considered family by the Presleys because they were so close.
JACKIE WILSON: "A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied from Elvis." --- JACKIE WILSON (Elvis quietly paid for Jackie's medical expenses until the day he passed away in 1977. Before Jackie's stage accident he would carry a small signed photo of Elvis in his pants pocket. Every day, bar none.)
LITTLE RICHARD - "He sung my Tootie Frutti & by him singing it, made it bigger & made ME bigger" And then he said: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...”- Little Richard
CISSY HOUSTON: "Elvis loved gospel music. He was raised on it. And he really did know what he was talking about. He was singing Gospel all the time - almost anything he did had that flavor. You can't get away from what your roots are." - Cissy Houston (The Sweet Inspirations co-founder & member & sang vocals for Elvis, also mother of Whitney Houston)
ISAAC HAYES - "Elvis was a giant and influenced everyone in the business." - Isaac Hayes
WHITNEY HOUSTON - " Elvis was very nice to my mother, Cissy. I would see him backstage, he was amazing to look at!"
ESTELLE BROWN of the SWEET INSPIRATIONS: "When I first started working with Elvis, I made the mistake once of calling him "BOSS" Elvis replied back to me, "Estelle, I'm not your boss, I'm your brother." After that exchange --- the bond between Elvis and the Sweet Inspirations strengthened into a lifelong bond. Estelle said that "We felt like equals." The Sweet Inspirations spent the rest of their lives explaining whenever the questions arose how wonderful Elvis was to them.
SHONKA DUKUREH - "I hope people [watch the Elvis movie] with an open heart and be willing to learn or unlearn some things that they may have thought they knew about Elvis, his life and his legacy.”

What a trainwreck of a reaction. BUT.. I have faith in ya'll. The Elvis Presley fanbase is one of the friendliest and most welcoming of all the legendary musician fanbases. Truthfully you made a LOT of incorrect statements. Nothing that cant be fixed with a little bit of education. I have a feeling that you'll both be stunned. Lets give this a shot shall we??
FACT #1: The music business was racist. ELVIS FOUGHT THAT. 1. Elvis NEVER stole a song. 2. HE DEMANDED that black songwriters got paid. Elvis paid royalties to each songwriter, based off of HIS OWN sales (no one was doing this for black artists in those days). ALL Elvis' songwriters were paid, including black songwriters (Otis Blackwell's family stated that ELVIS BOOSTED Otis' fledgling career and he was even able to tour again with song royalties long after he retired.)
FACT #2: Elvis opened up THREE NEW REVENUE STREAMS FOR BLACK SONGWRITERS.
    1. Song Rights.
    2. Royalty checks based on Elvis' own sales.
    3. Black artists' OWN RECORD SALES would skyrocket when Elvis covered their song because ELVIS CREDITED EACH SONGWRITER ON HIS ALBUMS, no exceptions. So many Elvis fans would buy the original album or the 45 single of the original artist as well.
FACT #3: Black songwriters SOLD SONG RIGHTS TO ELVIS - SO THIS IS A BIG MISUNDERSTANDING in the black community today. The truth is that Elvis Presley is credited for tearing down walls of racism in the music business. Not by words and interviews but BY ACTIONS. There is also proof that Elvis fought for the Sweet Inspirations, his black female singers that were barred in clubs and stadiums down south. Elvis would REFUSE to play music venues unless they would be allowed to accompany him AND BE TREATED WITH THE SAME DIGNITY AND RESPECT that he received. This ENDED those "colored only" entrances around the South. So Presley was actually quite the REBEL. No cap.
FACT #4: Rock music IS NOT only Black Music. Rock music is also mainly made up of Country music (mostly white artists), and Gospel music (many white and black churches and artists) and the Blues (mostly black artists). Lets add to that the legendary songwriters (such as Leiber and Stoller). Lets also add European, Asian, Middle East and African cultures where many music instruments used in Rock music were invented. That's where rock and roll sprang from. Elvis Presley is the only musician inducted into the Gospel, R&B, Country and Rock Halls of Fame.
FACT #5: Elvis Presley was singing in the 1940s in black and white churches down south during segregation in the Great Depression, putting together/arranging new sounds, before Chuck Berry and Little Richard ever cut a record in the 1950s. ELVIS MERGED THE BLUES AND ROCKABILLY AND GOSPEL and gave it a sound and stage presentation. NOBODY LOOKED OR SOUNDED LIKE HIM…. He was absolutely one of its pioneers and he engineered a very creative style that’s inspired everyone in the business one way or another. Elvis gave credit to many in the black community. Arthur Cruddup, Mahelia Jackson, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, James Brown, Fats Domino. And they ALL sang their music FOR THE SAME REASON: TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
FACT #6: Elvis' viewpoint coming from dirt poverty was profound. His twin brother was stillborn and buried in a shoebox. His home was a shotgun shack with no electricity or running water. That was his humble beginnings. He grew up in two legendary black neighborhoods Shakerag in Mississippi and Beale Street in Memphis Tennessee. Elvis came from gospel and country and knew as many blues songs as BB King (BB said that!) and they were great friends as you saw in the movie. That’s the holy trinity of rock ‘n’ roll. So Elvis was absolutely a pioneer as he was singing before Little Richard and Chuck Berry cut their first record.
FACT #7: Little Richard exposed the truth about Elvis about this very topic. "Elvis made my song TUTTI FRUITI bigger, and made ME BIGGER" and he said THIS: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...” - Little Richard. Elvis paid his black songwriters very well. And that is THE TRUTH.
FACT #8: Elvis was different, and his perspective was different than most white people of his day, especially among other whites in the South. Elvis grew up in the poorest parts of the South during the Great Depression and Segregation. And he understood the very lowest depths of poverty. Only 4 white families on his block, he lived and played with black children while living in a 1 room shotgun shack without running water and without electricity. His father built the home with a borrowed $150, then lost it because they couldn't afford to pay it back. How poor was Elvis? His twin brother Jesse Garon Presley was still born about 30 minutes before Elvis... and were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox. He was laid to rest in Priceville Memorial Gardens in Tupelo. A SHOE BOX.
This is why Elvis REMAINED HUMBLE and did his humanitarian and social work WITHOUT lights and cameras. He gave away almost every dime he ever made to poor and/or disadvantaged people, giving them cars, paying off their education, or burying a loved one. He even bought entire homes. He never did it for fame. He was invested in young people no matter who they were. VERY similar to Michael Jackson's generosity.
