I'd say it's definitely tied to the original version of the super-raid planned for D1, something key to point out here is the specific use of the orange "energy" wrapping around it, due to all early Hive technology using that color before they switched to the teals & greens instead all post story rewrite.
I think its a sootpearl? An artifact from 2015. It reads, "These oddly beautiful orbs can sometimes be found sunk into the rot and filth of the Dreadnaught." and looks identical, just less detail and a tiny bit different in textures but I think the idea is the same?
Yeah the Orb looks like a damaged Shrine of Oryx from an old D1 mission back in the day, way before Kings Fall, back when Dinklage was our Ghost. We destroyed the shrine due to it being used to communicate to Oryx, and it was either destroyed or teleported, that Orb could very much be the other end of the Shrine, or the same Shrine, intended to be found on the Dreadnaught as an easter egg to that mission?
Given that the reprised King’s Fall raid was the one released immediately before Root of Nightmares, it’s possible they used the OoB areas in KF as testing grounds for concepts and physics tests for RoN. This orb and the glow effect on it look strikingly like the planets from the Macrocosm encounter in RoN.
that's really interesting. i wonder if this is the only place in the game this asset is ever used? it must be, considering how outdated it looks, what with the orange light emitting from it and all. nowadays that color is used for darkness stuff, not for the hive. it's almost definitely a leftover from d1 that some mapper or environment artist forgot to remove.
I explored King's Fall like crazy, I don't remember seeing that orb though, but the skybox was active outside the map so spotting something that far out would be difficult plus there was so many objects floating out that it could just blend alongside it. That place was really massive.
Someone in Raidsecrets managed to get close enough to see it. It actually is there! No one has managed to stand on it or anything like that yet though. D1's options for height gain and distance in air are limited... I'd love to see it happen though.

Looks a lot like the nodes you shoot in Ron. However the sphere it self doesn’t look much like the stuff in Ron except for how the big planets spin in explicator… My guess is it was an early creating for the red border symbols to shoot and activate but they ended up going with the hive symbols instead. But they later used them in Ron and then part of the Ron encounters themselves. Would explain the continuity as well.
Looks like of like Crota's oversoul but unbroken... just fractured? So Oryx's oversoul?? could be an item we'll see in the future if they want to try and bring him back...
Surprising, given how powerful IRB is in D1. Is it just too far a distance to cover? D1 doesn't have much for long distant flights other than sparrows, right? Or can you heavy synth in air?
@@Froggy618157725 You can heavy synth in air. I think the main problem is losing height whilst sword flying. I dont remember many vertical movement techniques existing in D1
I've tried it a bit. You need to swing close together to get Nadir to proc, and swinging close together is also a big hit for long distance sword flying. Long distance is the main thing I'm interested in. I have found Nadir very useful for staying on the ground resisting pulls, like the pull in the Crota's End 1-2 transition.

IIRC, this orb was actually present in D1 Kingsfall (like you theorized). I recall watching a video of someone using hard cheats to no clip fly around OOB years ago- I believe they were doing it to formulate OOB speedrunning strats for D1 Kingsfall but then they got carried away. What purpose did it serve, though? Idk lol
That’s from a cut story arc in D1. It’s called Uritractus, Kidney stone of Oryx.
Had me in the first half XD
From the dlc: oryx’s yearly physical

The orange light around it reminds me of the ron planets

This is 100% what it is
It being from the shrine I mean. Why it's on the Dreadnaught is anyone's guess.
Once again, and for quite a while now, i have considered these some of the most interesting D2 vids compared to the actual game 😂
