- Supermodel Iman joins British Vogue, as she reflects on her dazzling modelling career. Following the release of Supreme Models, a six-part UA-cam docuseries about the black women who revolutionised fashion, the fashion icon (and wife of the late David Bowie) recalls what she learned from her family in Somalia, fighting for equal compensation in ’70s New York and founding the Black Girls Coalition with Naomi Campbell and Bethann Hardison. “It’s never too late to be what you might have been,” Iman advises. When I was a teenager, this woman was the reason I became a model. I watched her in the pages of magazines all the time. She gave me that hope that I could make it too. Well, I had my time. It wasn't as big as hers, but I'd like to think I made it easier for the next that looked like me. Now, I see Devan Goda, with Wilhelmina Models, on the Price Is Right! Iman has the elixir of eternal youth, she's almost 70 and still ridiculously beautiful, hot and gorgeous. In fact, I believe she's still a working model.
I had no idea that when she started modelling, black models were paid less than white models. And she said, no! I am not having this! And lo and behold she changed it. Just like that. What a woman.
