  • "Classic Yo-Yo Ma" chronicles Ma’s unique work process and legendary performances with rarely seen rehearsal and concert footage from throughout his entire career. In addition to these exquisite musical selections, the program includes newly taped interviews with Yo-Yo Ma and his friends and colleagues Daniel Barenboim, Emanuel Ax, Tan Dun and Bobby McFerrin.
Yo-Yo Ma is world-renowned for his incomparable artistry and range. His discography of nearly fifty albums includes fourteen Grammy Awards. His remarkable talent and limitless interests have created new boundaries for classical music.
The program highlights Ma’s unique ability to explore cultures and musical forms outside the Western classical tradition. His diversity is demonstrated not only through richly nuanced interpretations of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, but also Piazzolla, Edgar Meyer, American folk music and Tan Dun.
"I feel that when a composer writes a piece of music, he’s translating a human experience into sounds and there can be moments when you are in contact with the experience from which the music came.”

Yo-Yo shows us that music is not about the performer - it’s about life! Thank you so much!

How can anyone dislike this? His performances are flawless, he loves music, he gets along with everyone. And his patience when teaching and mentoring other people--plus, his name is Yo Yo :)

Yo-Yo Ma. What the hell!. He can come on stage and play nearly 3 hours of Bach's solo cello concertos without sheet music or a conductor and I think, what size brain do you need to have to do that? I mean he's like Einstein but music. And then he's part of a blues grass band! This guy's DNA, his every cell, is music. And then, on top of that he's a wonderful man of the world with diverse backgrounds. He's just an outstanding human being...period.

This is a interesting video about a world class artist.Yo-Yo Ma is very different from other topp players. If his meening is to get younger artist to think that this is the life you get as an artist,he is wrong. Very few will have the talent and POSSIBILLITIES as he has got. I think he is FANTASTIC! But for me som other artist have given me more….

Fantastic documentary, my respect for Yo Yo ma did nothing but grow seeing him throwing himself wholeheartedly at such an eclectic mix of people and styles, while still having time for 'classical'. It seems like people who mix genres often shy away from the greats (Bach etc.) as somehow 'standard fare' that they need to be liberated from, as opposed to Yo Yo taking the opportunity to see these masterpieces through new, interesting, exciting lenses. I have to say, though, that the whole Mark Morris bit *really* made me clench my fists and grit my teeth. I don't want to see myself as worlds apart from any artist, but everything about him and his work really got my ire up. I hope he's happy, successful, and very far from me.

From the very first time I saw Yo-Yo Ma perform... I have been totally captivated and entranced by his persona and soul-felt musicality. Thank you so much for providing this documentary... it's so valuable. My being soars when I hear him play whatever music genre. He's is truly a gift from the gods, for which I'm totally grateful.

Rediscovering Yo-Yo Ma in his early days. I have often heard him at The Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto Ontario Canada, but have never known his back story. I always assumed he was Canadian, since he has no accent. Along with a great joy, comes a humanity bar none from his music. I listened to his contribution to Biden's campaign, and message to Asian Americans, and I am most grateful that harmony will soon be restored between our 2 great Countries. 🇨🇦🗽🇺🇸

So enlightening on many levels. Who'd have thought that breathing control could influence music played on a string instrument, as it does on your preferred instrument. Metaphysically...God breathing out? Makes sense ;-)
