    Keeping angora rabbits for fiber can be a rewarding activity for urban farmers, especially as people are growing crazy for fiber arts. Because angora rabbits are small and quiet, they are ideal livestock for people who live in close quarters. Plus, they're easy to care for, needing only daily feeding and weekly grooming.
    Harvesting angora wool is simple, and the product can easily become an additional source of income for your household. Watch the video above to find out how easy it is to harvest angora fiber.

      just never buy angora from a chain or big stores. then yes they are probably badly treated and coming from country were they don´t care how to treat animals. this woman knows how to do it.

      If you don’t like the suffering of these animals don’t support the industry that sells their fur. They always come from abuse and torture. They are not going to wait 5 months like this lady did to get the shedding fur, and they also don’t want to get tons more animals b/c that means for food and water that they have to waste on and cages .

    This is humane as dogs being groomed. People are stereotyping too much on the "abuse". Go see actual videos wherein angora rabbits are being literally abused, screaming in pain, in China factories. Your comments are more appropriate there. Do something and act. Rather than leaving pity comments without any action.

    Calm down. This "animal abuse" is no different than shearing a sheep or a llama. I agree that the company in China is horrible and I want it to stop, but this really? She didn't even tie it the rabbit down with a rope. She just left it there. Was it screaming in pain? No. Was it trying to get away? No. It's also probably relieved to get rid of some of that fur. I know real animal abuse, but when people get so sensitive I get annoyed. By the way thanks for posting, I'm deciding to keep a few angoras and use their fiber for hats and clothes and things.

      Exactly! Angoras actually need to get rid of some of that hair sometimes. If you don't do this once in a while, they try to groom themselves and can eat their hair and get very sick. People need to focus on the REAL animal abuse in the world, and stop getting upset over someone taking good care of their pet.

I know they are being taken care of by you because you don't have them tied down and they aren't running, plus they seem to love you petting them. :) Unlike a lot of people out there I understand the need for the planet to have as little use of synthetics as possible (Including in the case of fabrics). I totally agree but buying angora fur is promoting and establishing demand for it. Which then makes people go to extreme lengths to get more and more because of consumers, which then leads to animal abuse and angoras suffering. . Their fur pulled from their skin where they scream in paint b/c of it. I don’t see anything wrong with the video tho. If I had any pet I would groom it too.

      Kayla Gaguancela so one best way to prevent such extremes at least in the US is establish laws to protect them, there are laws for Lobsters to prevent them from being over hunted, so if someone has a Angora Rabbit farm, they would need background checks, inspections on their well being and treatments and if any of these are violated then yank the license and make sure this person NEVER touches an animal again

I have chinchillas at home, if it was as simple as cutting their fur id do it. however its not necessary and illogical for my pets though i think we all agree a pair of chinchilla fur socks would be awesome in the winter if harvested humanely. if i could follow this procedure without freaking out my babies i would do it. i dont think the problem is the world is anti-fur, we're anti-fur thats been harvested at the cost of the animals life.

Die of wool block, which is when they get a fur ball stuck in their digestive tract while grooming themselves (they do it how cats do) and since they are unable to digest the fur or cough it up, they die of starvation. It's not that angora wool is cruel period, what is actually cruel is when one harvests the wool in a way that makes the animal feel pain. This is NOT cruel by any means, the rabbit is not in pain and is given ideal care. Anyone who wants angora wool should make sure that the angora product didn't come from someone who treated their rabbits cruely

  • @teasp00ns
    @teasp00ns 10 років тому +16

    I don't understand the bleeding heart vegans on this video. Wool rabbits are not slaughtered like meat or fur rabbits, they are clipped a couple times a year. In exchange they get reliable access to food and shelter from predators. If you think living 'in the wild' is some romantic, healthy thing, remember that life for prey animals in the wild is constant stress and usually ends in a violent death.

    • @teasp00ns
      @teasp00ns 10 років тому +1

      I have seen it. It is NOT how angora wool is normally harvested, at all. Plucking a rabbit like that is cruel but also poor business practice - if your rabbit dies from stress or pain, where do you get more wool? If you pluck the entire pelt, all your fiber grades will be mixed together and worth less. No one harvests their wool like this except this one Chinese factory, and PETA has gone and made everyone panic about angora when it is a humane practice everywhere else, and many people's livelihoods depend on it.

      Peter Banner I already commented that I watched that video. That video is NOT how angora is harvested anywhere else, it is unnecessary and frankly doesn't make any business sense to stress out and kill your animals when you can harvest pain-free very easily. It is cruel and out of the norm. I don't defend it, but I deny that it reflects the actual angora market.

    • @seanpenn3073
      @seanpenn3073 10 років тому +1

      Laurel O'Brien Living in the wild means that you are free. Living for the angora "production" means that you are captured and being exploited. Why not live and let them live, too, and wear animal-free products? And some words to the "business": You know that you're living in a capitalistic world, don't you? Buisiness man or workers do not care about pain they do not feel. They just care about the money in their pockets. It's all about maximizing the profits. That's why western corporations produce in countries like China. Cheap workers, less or no environmental constraints, no laws on animal rights - and altogether this means much more money on the one hand and brutal exploitation on the other. Just saying I deny that the actions in the peta video are common practice, is poor argumentation and ignores the capitalistic practice of maximizing the profits - especially when you consider that China produces 90% of angora and that peta delivers a video of that country.

It is encouraging to know that there may be some way to obtain humanely raised and sheared angora to spin in with the fleece that I also source from humane sheep owners. I'm hoping I can find some locally. It sure beats the plastics industry and industrial sheep ranches and rabbit farms.

A rabbit stripped like that wouldn't be able to produce a "farmable" product again for a long time (if ever). Please really look into PETA and their shady practices before believing what they "say".

      SissyKool Are you the speaker of the animal abusers?
      If the workers in Chinese angora factories would tread the rabbits in a gentle way, angora would be more expensive. The life of a rabbit is very cheap. Even if the rabbit would die, they wouldn't care because rabbits reproduce fast, their food costs nearly nothing and their tiny cages are made of wire or bamboo and can be used over and over again.
      Can you explain why fur (which is really "in" in the last years and nearly everybody wears fur nowadays) is cheaper than fake fur? It's why animals are treated so bad in China.

      I think it's anti-PETA-propaganda what you tell us here. Look, the business with fur and angora is a good one for the sellers. The truth about fur and angora "production" is bad for their business, so I think that the fur and angora sellers want to disgrace PETA.

    did she mention which breed this one was? i have 4 french, and had 1 german. the german needs to be clipped (i used small scissors), because they don't shed. the french shed 3x a year so i just comb/brush the fiber out over a week period. i wonder if this one was an english... i blend it w/ fine wool and alpaca. fiber runs anywhere from $5-14 per oz on etsy. $8-10 is common for prime fiber. cheers!

    How do you clip their stomach? I got 3 german angoras and one english, which I have some difficulties, trimming their stomach without cutting hole, so what is the best way to do so, without cutting hole or using the "streching-maschine" at the New Zealand farms?
    Thank you for your time!

    I understand that she is not harming the rabbit while taking it's fur like other places that tear the fur from the skin, but I still won't buy angora from anywhere because I cannot tell if a sweater was made from cruelty or not.

    I raise rabbits and if you used sheep shears you would have to be VERY careful make sure it doesn't cut the skin or it will break the rabbits skin open easily.

    Sure there are inhumane ways to harvest angora... but this clearly isn't one of them. The rabbit isn't being held down or cut too close. This is a fair trade transaction. The rabbit gets cool in the summer and protection from predators and free food and healthcare. And the woman is getting some wool. You can tell by the rabbits body language that him and the woman have clearly built an individual bond. Source thoroughly and carefully and you can make sure your dollar doesn't go to animal abuse. You might have to spend more but the quality will probably be way better since the rabbit had a higher quality of life than cheap factory angora.

    There is DEFINITELY a demand for angora fiber. I bought my rabbit as a pet AND fiber animal and I use the fiber as soon as it comes off the bunny and if I have any extra I sell it on Etsy or eBay or to spinning friends and it sells quickly. Why would you think there is no demand for it?

    I have this albino short-haired rabbit and she sheds hair like crazy! It's so annoying. I wanted to give her a shave down for the summer since it's really hot, but then I heard you have to be careful not to cut their skin, so I might just take her to the groomer because I don't trust myself.

  • @kellycorder4699

    Not true. The reason clippers are not used it because rabbits skin is VERY thin and it's easy to knick and you have much less control over what the clipper does and much MORE control of the scissors.

    So, since you don't answer anyone in the comment section, you didn't make the video to help people. Then why did you make it?
    You say you raise them to sell the fur, but, you can't sell it. Then why do it if there is no demand for it?
