I have a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with 410,000+ miles. With the original motor still. And I think finally the head gasket went. I can tell because the coolant is dark and smells like exhaust. Your video is fantastic and making my life easier.
I have an 07 Rubicon with 260K miles original engine . My head gasket finally went too. Mechanic told me with that mileage I need to replace the whole engine. I have never really had major problems with this jeep. I say it was a pretty reliable engine to get over 200K and never be to a mechanic. I am trying to assess if I should just rebuild the top end. Or pull the engine and have it completely gone thru.
Donny thanks for that detail video!!! thats exactly the problem i have with my jeep wrangler sahara 2019 but no one wants to touch it crazy . you make it look so easy need to find a mechanic with your skills here in miami florida .
Loved ur video on replacing lower manifold gasket was amazing & very detailed. Tysm! I did the same repair & put everything back together. My engine is still overheating but not as much now. New radiator(not Mopar) and thermostat, thermostat housing, hoses and flushed the core. Burped the system does not overheat while idle but I start driving & the heater blows cold. Vacillates between hot and cold but mostly cold UNTIl I hit 60 MPH on the highway, then consistantly hot & no overheating. The coolant fills up the coolant reservoir and will NOT return back into the radiator. Maybe a Leak somewhere cuz no back pressure to suck coolant back in..but cant find any leaks. Also How do I check for exhaust leak in the coolant. Before new radiator the coolant in reservoir smelled like fumes and was discolored. But new coolant doesnt have a fumes smell. And I also hear swishing behind the dash once in awhile which I'm thinking air still in system. Or wahat u said regarding the exhaust leak into coolant. Plz help! I have 2009 jku 3.8 at 275k
My problem started when I didn't burp the radiation after replacing the oil cooler.. it ran hot for 3 miles. What am I being told to change both heads? My fault codes read what yours did can't I just change that one?
Im having the same issue right now in Michigan 2012 Jeep wrangler. Started two weeks ago. no oil mix in coolant or overheating. I need someone to replace my Left Head too
@donnythelatemodeltech thank you sir for your vid! How long did it take you to do this job? Wanted to see if I can tackle it in a day…crazy how the cylinder head doesn’t connect to a chain …so the cams are controlled by those rocker bolts…took me a while to get that
Having the same problem but P0304. Changed everything finally took it to jeep. They did a compression test and want to charge me 5gs to fix the cylinder head. Am I jumping into something bad by doing this myself? Is it worth getting a quote outside of jeep?
Nice video. I like the elevator music. LOL. What year is your jeep and how many miles. You mentioned that you already replaced the exhaust 100K before... So is the mileage is out there?
I’ve got one with 198k on it with low pressure on 4 & 6 piston. I think it will be either the gasket or head based on all the searching I’ve done on the internet and am ready to do the repair you did here, but am worried the rest of the engine will struggle with the replacement of these parts…has that been your experience, or am I just being paranoid?
Same problem, same color and I’m willing to bet same year. Where are you located and what would it cost for you to do this I am tired of going under this hood man
Where are you located? I am having a similar issue with my 2018 Jeep Wrangler. I am getting a Cylinder 5 misfire, I replaced the spark plug and coil. Light went off for awhile but then came back on. The car is not overheating and there are no leaks.
@Jake Owens either the gasket just failed or some worpage . I figured why crack open the other side If it's ok.. don't touch it if it's not broke. I do have the gasket.. so if it does go ill just to it later.
@@jakeowens1770 get one with three cameras it’s easier to see cylinder walls and where gasket of head meet . They are about $130 but worth it try to get one with short camera cable mine is 10 feet it’s a pain to unroll and maneuver into cylinders

Is changing a head just that easy, is this guy just that good, or both?

Water pump?
If there is no water flow keeping engine cool it starts to overheat. Found my water pump was going out.
about to do the same job, should I go with OEM head gaskets or FEL-PRO head gaskets?
I would go oem.

Ive see a P0300 with misfires on a Minivan with 38L due to a warped cylinder head on engine front.
What year and engine jeep is that i have a 12 and has the same issues u have with gas fumes in the coolant
Im having the same issue right now in Michigan 2012 Jeep wrangler. Started two weeks ago. no oil mix in coolant or overheating. I need someone to replace my Left Head too
Good job!
Did you put the engine on top dead center before you pull the head gasket?
Not with this engine.

Yeah , this is as simple as it gets . You can knock it out in a day , but I would give your self the weekend just incase.
I need to do the right side of my jeep seems to be leaking water right next to the thermostat housing if your in san antonio could use some help
Mine is leaking a little in thar spot too it puddles up a very small amount and will over heat

Great video bro same issue with my 2012 jk… just wondering why do you have water in the radiator and not coolant? Thanks again for the help
Coolant is multi vehicle coolant - it’s clear. I done acouple water pumps and a radiator and have been using mostly the multi coolant,
@@Donnythelatemodeltech oh gotcha!! Thanks again bro video helped me a lot 🤙🏽
I'm doing the same thing do I have to put it in timing before I remove the head or how does that work
No timing, just pull the head.
MR. Donny do i have to ajust the head after i am done helping my friend . please help
The valve train ?
No adjustments , what you see in the video is everything

@Joseph Lacko I would recommend if it needs it, do it. The jeep actually runs more smoothly, and has more power.
I could feel your hesitation on using non mopar head gasket. Me too but ya gotta do what ya gotta do

Same exact situation. Coolant in cyl 6. What shop? Like the local dealer?

Lol. Autozone
@Donny The Late Model Tech Thanks! Did you consider replacing head gasket on the other bank? Did your head warp is that why gasket went bad?

What’s cost to replace the head gasket?? I’m in Texas
@Oscar Iturralde i spent 180 on felpro engine gasket set plus 35 for head bolts. Reused my heads. Plus oil change. Took me 12 hrs
Why my Jeep 2015 Rubicon is overheating
3.6 it’s probably the thermostat. Get OEM mopar from dealer
It’s very easy to replace couple 10mm bolts . OEM thermostat comes with housing and gasket as one until. Cost about $49 at highest price
Thermostat R&R ua-cam.com/video/nLr9TIRzdRE/v-deo.html
Looks like you need a Topside creeper
Would be nice!
Did you coat the head bolts with oil?
No
So I can get the head gasket changed without having to get another engine
Oh yes
As long as the head is not warped.
