  • This is Debian 12 with the Gnome Flashback desktop. This is normally installed alongside the Gnome and Cinnamon desktop. But Gnome Flashback can also be run as the only desktop. It is very light and will suit both old and new hardware.

    Hi Andrea. I found your channel through UA-cam recommendation (sometimes UA-cam can find good things), and it's a very nice thing what you do here. Keep up the good work.❤

    Even after using for more than 3 years, I never knew there's a desktop called Gnome Flashback.
    Thanks a lot for creating Linux videos.

    Thanks for this. I'm nostalgic for the gnome 2 look because that was my introduction to Linux around 2009. It's awesome to see a legitimate reason to have this fallback option. It's strange seeing the different GTK titlebar versions on one desktop though lol

      Yes I do like this desktop very much. The old versions of Ubuntu used to come with Gnome Flashback before they changed to Unity and now Gnome. Gnome Flashback can also be run on it's own as the only desktop. Peppermint OS do a version with this desktop. I have made a video about this here: ua-cam.com/video/AYZQYPooJk4/v-deo.html&t

      I think KDE is the best desktop out of all of them as it very pleasing in appearance. As it has a lot of transparent themes like Windows 7. You also have a lot of customisation options. Also the settings and layout are very much like Windows. So it's a very comfortable desktop to use for ex-Windows users like myself. The Trinity Desktop which is also KDE is worth trying. I have got it on one of my other laptops and I also made a video about Trinity on here. As for Gnome well you could try Mate or Cinnamon which is based on Gnome. But both desktops have the Mint style start menu.

    Hi Andrea, do you think Gnome is better than cinnamon? I've used cinnamon a lot on linux mint, for older laptops it worked flawlessly but i found gnome somewhat a bit heavier than cinnamon. It's great to have both systems, i tought it was harder to do that and didnt wanted to try it, it's so great to see you succed on this, thank you for the video

      Its not that Gnome is better than Cinnamon it's just different. A lot of the software we use on Linux is Gnome or Gnome based. Others are KDE and both work on most desktops. When I first saw the Gnome Desktop I did not like it at first. Because it does look a bit like the start screen on Windows 8. But when I started using it I found it was nothing like the horrible Windows 8 Metro Theme. I was able to launch programs and find everything. But I do prefer the old Gnome 2 which did have the Windows style start menu. Linux Mint 9 Gnome was the first distro I tried back in 2010. That did have the Mint Menu that we now have on Mate desktop. I personally think that Gnome should have stayed with the Gnome 2 style start menu as it's easier to find things and looks nicer. As an ex Windows user I do prefer to have a start menu in the left hand corner rather than an app menu. But I have gotten used to it now and you can use the Arc Menu which does give you the Mint style menu on Gnome. Cinnamon is better for new users who are coming over from Windows and tying Linux for the first time. Because it does have the Windows style start menu that they know. So is Mate a good desktop to start with. Both Cinnamon and Mate are really alternative versions of Gnome and most Gnome software will run on those desktops.

      thank you for the response, for sure I liked Cinnamon better than gnome for those reasons@@AndreaBorman

    You could probably use the flatpak version of openshot, it would have been easier. Nice video btw, I didn't know gnome flashback.

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman  3 місяці тому +2

      Yes there is a Flatpak version of Openshot. Snap also has one. Both Ubuntu and Debian provide a Deb package of Openshot but it's a much older version. That's why I added the repository. That way I can get the latest stable version and get updates for any new version. On Debian I just downloaded the Appimage because the repositories are only for Ubuntu based Distros. But that still gets updated. Also if you install Openshot from the software Center or Synaptic it install Gimp, Vim and other things I don't use.Where as if you install it from the repositories or Appimage you get the latest version direct from the software maker.

    So installing Cinnamon on Debian also pulls all the Linux Mint branding?

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman  3 місяці тому +3

      No I don't think so but Cinnamon was created by Linux Mint. Because a lot of people did not like Gnome 3. Mate was also created for the same reasons so that people would have an alternative. Both are really alternative versions of Gnome but with a more traditional start menu.

    Hi Andrea. I've been wondering, how did you get into computers?

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman  3 місяці тому +9

      By chance actually. I leaned from the person sitting next to me in an Internet cafe. He was also helping out in the shop. He showed me the basis of what to do. How to use the mouse, open the start menu ,and all that. Then I learned from there. You see we did not learn computers at school because I went to school in the 1970's. So in those days no homes had computers or Internet. That only started in the 1990s. Someone else showed me how to do email. Then in 2010 I got my first home computer.Which was a Windows 7 Starter Netbook. Before that I was using Internet cafes. And of course all of the computers there had Windows XP.

      I am 60 years old and in those days we they didn't teach computers at school. If you wanted to work in an office they taught you how to use a typewriter and that was it. Not many people were skilled at computers because in those days they weren't used everywhere like they are now. It's different now of course. Still most people don't think of using Linux. Some people don't even know about it. They just use Windows because that's what's on most computers.The way Windows has become what with Windows 10 and now Windows 11. I think more people will be turning to Linux because Windows 11 is not like Windows at all anymore. No start menu, not user friendly and you cannot even log into your own desktop without a Microsoft account. That's why I left Windows and moved to Linux. I have been using Linux for two years now. Yes a lot of the Linux desktops do look like Windows. I think that is set up that way so that Windows users will get used to Linux. And feel more comfortable with a Windows XP or 7 style start menu. Take Gnome Flashback the desktop I have got in the video. It is a lot like Windows in appearance. So is Cinnamon, Mate and KDE. Only better done because the start menus are nicer and better set out than Windows 7 was.
