  • On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss Apple Intelligence, the apparent suspension of work on the second-generation Vision Pro headset, and Apple's rumored plans to move to thinner device designs.
Apple Intelligence is Apple's upcoming personalized AI experience for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. We look at the device limitations around the feature and address speculation that older models could have utilized the cloud processing to offer Apple Intelligence. While cloud computing is an important part of Apple's AI solution, on-device processing plays a crucial role in making Apple Intelligence functional, private, and efficient. We discuss these device requirements, including the necessity for M1 or later chips in Macs and iPads, and how these specifications should ensure a good user experience. We also explore the gradual rollout of Apple Intelligence and its implications and consider the potential workflows with Apple Intelligence, contemplating what might be possible with advanced AI integration across apps.
Next, we discuss the suspension of work on the second-generation Apple Vision Pro headset. Although Apple had reportedly been focusing on developing a lower-cost headset for some time, the news of Apple's decision to halt work the second-generation Vision Pro still comes as a surprise. We examine what this means for the future of the Apple Vision product line, including the potential benefits and drawbacks of prioritizing a less expensive model.
Lastly, we turn our attention to the future of Apple's devices, particularly the company's recently reported decision to again move toward thinner and lighter products. We delve into the ongoing debate between the benefits of thinner, more portable devices versus thicker ones with larger batteries. The M4 iPad Pro models and the upcoming "iPhone 17 Slim" demonstrate this trend, touting redesigns that aims to offer a more streamlined form factor without sacrificing battery life. We also discuss the anticipated MacBook Pro models with M4 series chips that are now expected to launch later this year.

I enjoy listening to both of you. Here's my perspective on the trend of thinner iPhones: many of us appreciate the iPhone for its seamless blend of technology and style. When I wear a suit, I want my iPhone to fit effortlessly in my pocket without bulging, without weighing my pants down. It needs to be sleek and easy to carry. Therefore, making the iPhone thinner and lighter, even at the expense of a bit of battery life, is the right direction. I trust Apple to get it right. Cheers, guys!

Haha, I loved when Hartley said "I still think that is not as pleasant as it was for me when I had an iPhone 6". I'm totally with him, I genuinely think the iPhone 6 had the perfect thickness. When I hold my 14 Pro Max next to it, I'm reminded how much thicker and heavier it is. IMHO, the iPhone 6 should be the max thickness goal for future iPhones, not even the 6S Plus, just the original 6!

    For the „Vision“ (non pro).
Make it a „Display only“ Solution.
Move the processing power into the battery pack. (Or process things in an other Apple device).
If I have to tether someting anyway, why put all the processing stuff into the headset.
The vision would be thinner, lighter and more cost efficient

Great show guys! Personally, I am for the iPhone remaining at its current thickness (or even more). I think my main reason is (besides the extra battery life) is being able to carry it in my back pocket and not have it bend.

@Dan I want longer battery life over thinner devices. I want Apple to spend optimizations gains on longer battery life rather than minimizing device size. The “thinness” is fine right now.

I’ll jump in about the whole battery thing and thinness of the phone. With these phones getting slightly larger, I’m ok with them getting a bit thinner. I feel this way for two reasons. First, I agree with the young man that with chip efficiency and stacked battery tech, it will allow the phone to run similar battery times as now if not better. This brings me to my second opinion. Unless the phone can get to 2 days of battery life solid, most people will charge over night. With that said, they will just care about it lasting all day. If the iPhone stayed the same size and only gained an hour of battery, I’m willing to sacrifice that for a thinner device!

It’s time apple specifies RAM on the iPhone Specification page. I want my next iPhone Pro Max to have 16 GB of RAM. We pay premium prices for iPhones and half of folks are left behind because of not having enough RAM. We also need reviewers to be much more critical on this topic.

It would be better to have a longer battery rather than thinner design. I'm not saying make it thicker (which to be honest I wouldn't mind) but if you can make it thinner than just use that space for battery. Same size but longer battery life.

43:30 seems like Dan wants more usage life in the current thickness, while Hartley just wants thinner phones with the current amount of usage life. Sounds like an eternal debate with mobile electronics. I'm with Dan.
I miss the days of dumb phones where charging it once to twice a week was reality. I have an iPhone XS and the screen size and physical size is just fine. The only thing I add to my phone is a glass screen protector, I've never used a case on any of the phones I've had so it's thin enough and light enough. What I would like is more usage time.

I think the way Apple has done Ai is really interesting and exciting. I hope it works as expected. It’s a much better approach than Microsoft with its terrible ‘Recall’ (since recalled) or Facebook scraping all your data for its Ai from June 26th unless you personally object. Terrible as regards privacy and security.

iPhone 6/7 were significantly thinner and lighter than the current iPhones. Picked up a 6S the other day and hadn’t realised how much thicker and heavier the iPhone has become in the last few years. I remember thinking to myself that it was actually absurdly thin and light, but I have to admit it felt pretty good in my hand.

I would take the larger battery and trade it for the „thinness“.
I have an iPhone 15 Pro and my battery carries me more or less through the morning.
I would apprecieate habing a slightly thicker device if that would mean, that the battery could last a whole day or more.
One thought: if they hadnt made the iPad Pro thinner there wouldnt be the need for a camera bump, the battery would have been larger and I were able to lay it flat on a table without a folio case to comfortable write on it. And the Package would Even be thinner than the iPad + the Folio now.
Make the Pro pro and the Air air agein. There is no need for an airy Pro.

I think if battery life continues to stay bad on the iPhone, it will drive people to android. It doesn’t matter how many features you have on your phone no matter who makes it, If the batteries dead your phones worthless who wants to charge your phone once or twice a day to make it through the day.

Yeah Apple Vision Pro, is forward thinking but it seems to not have a use case for me. And the price just way too high. If it was a light set of glasses like Google glass maybe, or just clip onto normal glasses, then could be usable.

I am old school (and just plain old LOL) and could probably care less about thinner iPhones. To me , that just sounds like it’ll break easier. I am all for more battery life and less fragility in a product.
I always have bought the Pro Max. One year I bought the pro and I wasn’t satisfied with the battery life or the screen size. Being older, and my eyes are not as good as they used to be, I do appreciate the larger screen.
Is the Pro Max a little heavier? Yeah, but it’s not really an issue for me. I think a lot of people still consider Apple products a status symbol, so the sleekness, thinness and beauty of the device matters a lot, and Apple has to cater to those customers.
I’m not saying I’m not one of those people, I haven’t had a case on my phone in probably seven years, but that’s why I keep AppleCare+. I’ve really enjoyed your videos and opinions. Keep up the good work.
On Vision Pro, I’m glad they’re working on a cheaper model. I just hope it doesn’t have to give up many features for someone like me who doesn’t want to spend more than $2000 on a device. I don’t think they’ve given up on the pro version of the product either, it’s just gonna be a little further down the line. I mean they don’t come out with new Mac Pros every year nowadays. Always good discussions though.

@44:59 Deploy a community poll for the battery/device thickness question.
My answer is inclined with Hartley.
I do not want to thicken for a greater battery capacity typical to today's technology.
Thinner is good, and the battery is already adequate,
and Dan's intense activity in the last week is not typical to most consumer's phone usage.
There _may_ be a dip for a few years, but this technology will likely continue to improve and we'll rise past where we came from.

I feel like Vision Pro two is being delayed because Apple finally saw that AI is what everyone is hyped about and so they pulled those people off vision for the time being until they could adequately catch up with other tech companies in the AI space.

Man, you just stole my comment lol! I was just about to say this exact thing! I’ll focus on this. The cheaper AVA will have the same lenses as the current AVP, but people need to understand that we are a year away or more from that release! Those same components will be much cheaper then! We have to remember that AVP was first announced a year ago with this chipset! next year this time or fall will be 2 to 2.5 years after. I don’t think Apple releases an Air version that much lower than the experience on the AVP!

The battery life of the iPhone 15 pro is HORRIFIC with iOS 17 already. By far the worse battery life of any iPhone I’ve had and I’ve been using since the iPhone 4S. I literally am deterred from using the bloomin’ thing as a result. Everyone I know with the same phone says the same thing. Apple need to optimise the hardware and software especially with the new AI features coming which I suspect will hit battery life either further. Something is wrong here and I struggle to believe Apple will address it with a thinner phone unless they’ve come across some miraculous hardware and software optimisation capabilities. I’ve never been more dissatisfied….

Great episode. I agree the constant reminders about Apple adopting features Android had first are annoying. No one mentions that Apple had a 120Hz refresh rate before Android devices or the many, many features Android copied from Apple.
The key takeaway from WWDC is that Apple has not only developed their own on-device LLM (Large Language Model) but also a larger cloud-based model. This was unexpected. No one had those on their bingo card! More importantly, Apple addressed concerns about intellectual and artistic theft, security, and privacy within their AI architecture, reassuring artists, consumers and scientists involved in the creation of AI technology.

@@unCoopervised I agree that they can and could have done more for older devices. I use Siri every day on my 14 pro and have been waiting for improvements for years too. Also, we can't change the assistant natively to something better (which I feel is anticompetitive but that's a discussion for another day lol). It's sucks that improved Siri isn't coming to our older devices but we also can't expect any less from Apple these days...
maybe android is a better option if they are willing to roll out all features to older devices... I sure am considering it as I feel Apple is losing its way
